Top 5 Wildlife Experiences for Cycling in Costa Rica
Boat Trip on Tárcoles Estuary Flowing through the central Pacific region of Costa Rica, the Tárcoles River is famous for its concentration of crocodiles. Take a boat ride along the Tárcoles Estuary to see these impressive reptiles up close, some of which can grow to over a staggering 15 feet in length. But the excitement doesn’t end here – the estuary is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 50 species of birds gracing the area. Look out for colourful scarlet macaws, herons and kingfishers darting through the mangroves.
Manuel Antonio National Park Sprawled along the central Pacific coast, Manuel Antonio National Park is famous for its unspoilt beaches, mist-shrouded rainforests and abundant wildlife. Despite being one of the smallest national parks in Costa Rica, it’s packed with a wide variety of fauna and flora. When visiting Manuel Antonio, you can expect to see white-faced capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys and the more elusive squirrel monkeys. The park is also home to sloths, iguanas, toucans and hummingbirds. The well-maintained trails make it easy to explore the fascinating ecosystems, from the rainforest to scenic coastal viewpoints.
Tortuguero Boat Ride Lying on the Caribbean coast, Tortuguero National Park is often referred to as the “Amazon of Costa Rica” because of its intricate network of canals and rivers, and the best way to explore is by boat. A guided boat tour with our knowledgeable leaders gives you a more intimate glimpse into the biodiversity of the park. As you navigate the peaceful waterways, listening to the unusual sounds of nature, keep an eye out for green sea turtles nesting on the park’s beaches. You might also spot manatees, caimans and a variety of monkeys swinging through the trees.
Boat Ride on Tenorio River Flowing through the Guanacaste province, the Tenorio River provides you with a relaxing wildlife adventure. As you float downriver, you’re surrounded by lush vegetation and leafy canopies and you’ll have the opportunity to observe the likes of crocodiles basking on the riverbanks, otters playing in the water and capuchin monkeys swinging from branch to branch. This is a great way to connect with nature and appreciate the serene beauty of Costa Rica’s waterways.
Cahuita National Park Situated on the Caribbean coast, Cahuita National Park is a vibrant gem filled with coral reefs, rainforests and diverse wildlife. Enjoy a combination of land and marine experiences that bring you up close to monkeys, raccoons and sloths. You can also explore the beautiful coastal path that winds alongside turquoise waters and pristine beaches. Cahuita is famous for its coral reefs where you can snorkel in an enchanting underwater world, teeming with brightly coloured fish, sea turtles and even nurse sharks.
My first cycling trip ever and being only a recreational cyclist i was a bit worried if i’d keep up, but i worried needlessly! Anyone with a good level of fitness and the right mindset will be fine. It was humid, wet, hilly and challenging on times, but we all kept up and altogether it was a great adventure and the downhills, wildlife and scenery more than made up for it.
Cycling in the heat, humidity, tropical rain with abundant wildlife with great company, a few cheeky climbs, and relax after in a pool, a gin and good grub. What’s not to like?!!
I’ve only rated it 4 as I am a fussy client and although pre-warned about Costa Rica highways, I was a bit disappointed, and also only one welcome drink in hotels. I expected too much for the cost of the tour in comparison to other tours but that is probably due to cost of petrol over such a distance and return, and 3 bike hires.
