A fascinating and varied tour through 3 interesting Baltic countries.
Most Inspirational Moment
Visit to Curonian spit
Thoughts on Group Leader
Excellent. He was knowledgeable, approachable and created a strong group bond and identity.
Advice for Potential Travellers
If you are interested in culture, history and architecture, you will enjoy this trip.
Lots to see
An interesting and varied look around the Baltic countries.
Most Inspirational Moment
I had several inspiring moments including seeing the art nouveau buildings in Riga, climbing the tower of the medieval castle in Cesis with a candle lit lantern and visiting the stunning Rundale Palace, which was beautiful and a must-see.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Our group leader, Migle, was great. She was knowledgeable, with a great sense of humour and made herself available to all of us. Some of us wanted to visit a traditional folk festival that was taking place in Vilnius and she took us there so we wouldn't get lost, which was a great help.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Wear comfortable and sensible shoes for walking on cobblestones and pavements in the towns! Also, bring insect repellent as we came across mosquitos in several places.
Excellent trip with great variety.
A great trip, with a really good balance of sights for each of the three countries.
Most Inspirational Moment
The whole trip was great, the three main cities of course lived up to expectations. Also it was nice to balance the trip out with several castles, smaller towns such as Tartu and Kaunas and the seaside areas of Jurmala and the Curonian Spit.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Lukus, was an excellent guide, who spoke with great enthusiasm and knowledge about the history and culture of the three countries.
Advice for Potential Travellers
If travelling outside of the summer months, then pack lots of layers as our trip in early May started off at 6c and sunny, then ended up being 20c in Vilnuis. Also there's no point bringing GBP in cash as the exchange rate for Euros is really low (it was 1.15 in the UK but 0.89 locally in May24). Most bars & restaurants take cards. As previously stated in other reviews, be aware of prompt 9am departures on all days. The advantage is that no time is wasted and you see so much more.
Review of Discover the Baltics
A busy but fascinating tour through three beautiful countries, providing a varied insight into the culture and history of the region.
Most Inspirational Moment
Appreciating the value of democracy and freedom after visiting the underground soviet missile base in Lithuania.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Vilija was a great tour leader. She was very knowledgeable and told us many interesting things about the culture and history of the Baltics, made all the more poignant by her personal experience growing up in Lithuania during Soviet occupation. Vilija was very patient and took time to make sure all members of the group were enjoying themselves and their needs were met. She had a great sense of humour too. A lovely person.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Bring lots of layers so you can dress for all weathers; we had a cold snap and snow, followed by 18 degree sunshine a few days later.
3 stunning countries
A truly wonderful tour with a lovely group of like minded people led by an amazing guide.
Most Inspirational Moment
I especially loved the old town of Tallinn which was absolutely beautiful. Also Trakai Castle which was in the middle of a large lake near Vilnius.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Our leader Vaida was wonderful, she was informative and also very kind when I required stitches in my finger. Our driver was also great; it isn't often that one is driven to A&E in a huge coach.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Just go and enjoy.
Excellent overview across these three countries
This is an excellent trip overall with a few caveats along the way. It is certainly a great way to see the highlights of all three Baltic states, both in terms of the three capitals but also other highlights and interesting places. You will learn a huge amount about the history and culture! You will also do a lot of walking…
Most Inspirational Moment
My husband and I liked the day exploring the Curonian Spit the best, just because it is a beautiful place with quite a lot of different things to see and do - the freshly smoked fish lunch was a brilliant experience (if slightly not for the faint hearted!). Rundale Palace was amazing (largely because of our brilliant local guide there) and we also really enjoyed the Hill of Crosses, which for us was unexpectedly moving in a curious way. All three capitals were good, but we both liked Tallinn the best; however the Art Nouveau architecture in Riga was also a highlight of the trip. The Cold War Museum in Plokstine, which was in fact the main reason for us choosing this particular trip rather than one by another company, was also well worth visiting.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Lukas was so so good - utterly dedicated at all times and also determined that we should learn as much as possible about every place that we visited. He was very conscientious and precise about timings! He was also very patient and prepared to answer our questions about life in Soviet times and kindly told us about his family's history. When one of our cases, and also one of another couple's in the group, were delayed, he was very helpful about helping us to keep in the loop about their whereabouts and delivery.
Advice for Potential Travellers
This trip is advertised as grade 1 (leisurely) but apart from the 9am starts on most days it isn't! One of our group had a fitbit and we walked typically 17,000-18,000 steps per day, including on the days which were "travelling" ones. This is mostly on often uneven cobbled streets and sometimes up/down lots of stairs in castles etc! Weather - we went in July/August and had several days with torrential rain, luckily often in the evening or when travelling. But you really needed to have both a good waterproof and an umbrella to stand any chance of staying dry, and ideally bring two pairs of waterproof shoes if you can as well. I would say that the weather is very like Scotland... You definitely need to bring insect repellent and bite cream; pretty much all of group were thoroughly bitten at various points in the trip (some through tucked in socks in long trousers!). The two hotels in Estonia catered well for both gluten and lactose free diets; the other hotels had rice cakes as the gluten free option and no lactose free alternatives. Vegetarians will be reasonably fine in restaurants as long as they are happy to eat lots of dairy, especially cheese (although still limited choice), but vegans will really struggle. Bring snacks if in any doubt!
Discovering the Baltics
A very interesting trip that gave a good overview of the three Baltic States and didn’t just concentrate on the three capital cities.
Most Inspirational Moment
Visiting the Soviet era nuclear missile base in Lithuania
Thoughts on Group Leader
Our group leader Andrius Mazrimas was an excellent guide who took great care in ensuring that everyone felt comfortable and dealt with any issues as they arose. He ensured a good balance between the guided tours and the free time, and didn't overschedule - which made the trip into an enjoyable holiday. He also added a nice personal touch to ensure that we got a good flavour of the countries that we visited
Fantastic Baltics
This was a fantastic trip! Each of the countries are unique and there is something to love about all of them. The trip itinerary is really well planned, and there is so much free time in the capitals that you can really feel comfortable just wandering around. I was lucky to be in a group with a really lovely and enthusiastic bunch of people, as well as all the memories, I even came home with a newfound enjoyment of castles.
Most Inspirational Moment
There were so many. Vilnius nightlife is intense. The former nuclear missile site was fascinating. The Curonian Spit is beautiful. Jurmala real estate makes me want to win the lottery. The Riga medical museum is a must for healthcare geeks like me, although the two-headed dog is something that sticks with you. My favourite stop on the trip was Kaunas, and to be honest I can’t even explain why, it’s just a charming little city.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Andrius was brilliant. He is so laid back but still managed to run a tight-ship. He was really open and honest about his experiences growing up during Soviet times, and how things changed as Lithuania became independent. Andrius also has a fantastic sense of humour and quick wit, and a lot of the time it felt like we were just hanging out with him. The local guides were all great as well, and the two drivers were both really good and I felt safe at all times.
Advice for Potential Travellers
A lot of museums are closed on Mondays, so if you’re going to be in one of the capitals on a weekend into Monday it’s worth doing some research to prioritise what you want to visit. Unless you’re really into cabbage vegetarians might struggle. Don’t forget your insect repellent for the national parks, and invest in a good pac-a-Mac.
Great first exodus experience
This was my first experience using Exodus and I’m sure it won’t be my last. I had. A great time with a really wonderful group of people. Our guide, Andrius, was great with lots of great local knowledge and facts he was able to share.
Most Inspirational Moment
I really enjoyed the day on the Curonian Spit
Fascinating Baltics
An excellent, busy trip with sufficient free time to explore on our own and lots of variety between cities and countryside/seaside. I finally made it as I had booked this trip when Covid intervened and it had to be cancelled. I am so glad that I was now able to go.
Most Inspirational Moment
Hard to select just one. Tallin was my favourite city, the Art Nouveau district and museum in Riga, the Occupation Museum in Riga was a real 'eye opener' and the Hill of Crosses was amazing and moving. Also being able to go to the Lahemaa National Park, the Curonian Spit and Jurmala for the architecture. As I said before, good variety in this trip between cities and countryside/seaside.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Andrius Mazrimas was excellent. Well organised, friendly, helpful and with a good sense of humour. He told us a lot about growing up under Soviet rule which was a fascinating insight. He always had suggestions for possible restaurants, helpful for me as I am a vegetarian. I had some great meals and some that were not!
Advice for Potential Travellers
Make sure you put on LOTS of insect repellant in the Lahemaa National Park. If you are vegetarian take some snacks for 'emergencies'.
