Late getaways departing in May
May is perfect for a last-minute getaway, as some key destinations offer mild temperatures, fewer crowds, and stunning spring blooms. In Asia, South Korea is enjoying vibrant festivals and areas in full bloom. While in Europe, Portugal and Italy boast wildflower trails, drier terrain and pleasant weather for exploring. In Africa, Madagascar’s wildlife is wonderfully active. So, if you’re thinking of travelling during May’s shoulder season take a look below at some of our top last-minute trips.
For those looking for a new trail to tackle, our Walks of the Cinque Terre and Portofino may be the perfect trip for you this May. This month you can enjoy pleasant temperatures, fewer tourists, and breathtaking coastal scenery before the summer rush. The mild weather which sits around 15–23°C, offers ideal conditions for hiking the coastal trails and sections of the Sentiero Azzurro. Wildflowers also add colour to the landscapes, with vibrant poppies, sea lavender and rock sapphire scattered along the trails and the coastline. The villages remain largely peaceful this time of year too, which allows for a more authentic experience of Italy.
This month is a great time to join our Cycle the Coastal Portuguese Camino, as you’ll enjoy fewer crowds, stunning scenery and mild temperatures before the summer heat sets in. In May, you’ll find blooming wildflowers along your route, alongside ideal trail and road conditions. The rainy months have gone, which means safer cycling routes with minimal risk of slippery cobblestones, making your journey along the Portuguese Camino a smooth one. Longer daylight hours also offer more time to explore historic towns off the saddle.
May is a fantastic month to head out on our Highlights of Madagascar trip, due to its pleasant dry-season weather, fewer crowds, and lush green landscapes after the rains. With less rainfall and low humidity, this month makes for an ideal time to go wildlife viewing. You’ll find many species, including ring-tailed lemurs and sifakas, are pretty active in May, while reptiles like geckos, chameleons and frogs can still be spotted before the cold winter months slow them down.
For something cultural, why not try our Discover South Korea trip? With mild, pleasant temperatures and beautiful spring blooms, travelling in mid-May means you might also get to see parades and decorated temples, as parts of the country will be celebrating Buddha’s Birthday & the Lotus Lantern Festiva and the Boseong Green Tea Festival.
