Enjoyable walking off season on beautiful coast

Expert local guide and family run hotel made this a great trip

Worth all those steps for the food and the views

The weather in March was mixed, but we only got wet once or twice. In general the weather was good for walking, and later in the week there was plenty of sun.
Most places looked like they were just getting reason for the season, with much painting and repairs being done. Being this early meant most places were quiet, so no queuing or traffic jams.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking the crater rim of Vesuvius with a local expert was very interesting. Seeing the scale of Pompeii, again with a local expert guide. The Path of the Gods had great views. Eating a gelato in Amalfi in the sunshine mid-week was in marked contrast to after the first walk when the waves were crashing on the beach. Watching the hotel chef making various pizzas, and then eating as much as I could manage.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Severio obviously enjoys his job, and reordered the schedule to make the most of the varying weather. Living locally meant he knew the area very well. I would certainly recommend him as a guide.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There are indeed a lot of steps (mostly down), although generally in good condition. For someone who lives in a flat part of the UK, the first few days were hard going at times, We were very well fed every evening, and the local house wine was very good value. The boat trip from Amalfi to Capri on the free day was fun, and included a bit of sightseeing of the Capri coastline on arrival. Even in March the buses between Capri and Anacapri were busy, so getting around took a lot of time. The Path of the Gods ends in Positano and we were lucky that the return boat ride had just started. Any earlier and it would have been a return by bus.

Walking the Amalfi Coast

A fantastic week of walking. Scenery is stunning. Food is delicious. Hotel great. Lovely group and a great leader.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Itinerary can change depending in the weather so “go with the flow” as even the group leader can’t summon up the sunshine. Do the Mount Vesuvius crater …it really isn’t that scary and those in my group who didn’t do it were so disappointed when we fed back to them about how accessible it is. A good level of fitness is required as there are a lot of steps!!

Nice trip, good scenery

To me, this was a really good little one week trip away. The scenery on the walks Veriano took us on was great. Apart from climbing up Tre Calli the trend on the walks is mostly down hill. A feature of some of the walking is the time spent going down the many many steps in the area. This can agitate sensitive knees. Sometimes the steps are rough stone steps, sometimes they are neatly contructed concrete. Perceptions of how difficult the walking is will obviously vary with ability from one person to another. To me the walking was not difficult and we were on the move for 4-5 hours in total each day but there was never any rush and rest/photo stops were frequent. There is a short section on path of the gods where you might need to get your hands down on the rocks though. The village of Bomerano is small, there are some shops, the opening time of which, to me, were entirely random. I’m sure they weren’t but that’s how it felt. There is a small grocers/convenience shop right next door to the hotel if you want snacks and drinks. The Hotel Due Torri was nice. A relatively small family run hotel. I had no complaints. Any drinks and meals not on the itinery you buy during the week are charged to your room and settled on the last night, rather than pay as you go. Breakfast options were simple but sufficient. The evening meals were high quality and very well prepared and generally very Itallian. Pity Itallian style food is not really to my taste. I have to thank my group mates for feeding me extra of what I wasn’t being fussy about 😀 Our free day options came down to visiting Herculaneum or Sorrento and Capri. There were some concerns about whether Capri was going to be in low season slumber like Amalfi and Positano and also if the ferry would run reliabley given the variable weather conditions at the time so most of us chose Herculaneum, which I thought was great, as good as pompei, just smaller.

Most Inspirational Moment

The day we visited Vesuvius/Vesuvio and Pompei. We walked up to the crater with a specialist and very knowledgeable guide and he then took us away from the (school trip) crowds around the crater of Vesuvio. The views in all directions were fantastic, Naples Bay, Sorrento peninsula, Apennine mountains etc. Looking down into the crater was impressive and awesome with the thought this volcano is going to blow again at some time. Afterwards we drove a short distance to Pompei. This was very interesting and ticked of a long held wish to visit this world famous historic site. For me, it was the best day of the trip.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent! Our group leader was Veriano. Veriano had good humour, knowledge, patience and flexibility. With any group on a trip like this , there will be a mix of physical ability. No one was left behind. We were in good hands.

Advice for Potential Travellers

My trip began in late February. This is still winter in southern Italy too. We were gambling with the weather, dodging rain, from start to finish. We were very lucky and never actually needed full rain gear on the trail and had plenty of blue sky while on the trails during the week. The sky did however tend to cloud over in the afternoon. I found weather forecasts available on the internet were not entirely reliable. I'll put this down to the fact we were on a hill top location right on the coast. Temeratures were generally cool 14-16C during the day. The fact this time of year is low season was very apparent in towns like Amalfi and Positano. The advantage being we had the trails almost entirely to ourselves. The roads in the immediate area are narrow and winding. I don't think I was the only one that started to feel a little travel sick in the back of the mini bus.

Veriano was superb, always kept a careful eye, changed itinerary to reflect the weather, ensured we had appropriate stops and water breaks, was kind, thoughtful and knowledgeable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

lots of steps but not difficult walking

A great walking experience on the Amalfi Coast

Well organised walks, expertly led by the Italian Guide, Veriano.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Walks are great but can be a bit challenging, however the guide stopped frequently and none are too long.

Stepping it in style

An excellent way to get to know the beautiful Amalfi Coast. There was a lot of walking & very many steps, but we knew that from the Exodus trip notes, & had prepared.
The weather wasn’t entirely reliable, no surprise in February, but most days were dry after a wet start.
The accommodation was good, with like vely food & drink and the kitchen visits to see preparation of local specialities were great.
Transport was provided by local minibus drivers, who were very careful on the twisty roads.
Veriano, our group leader, was lovely, knowledgeable & well connected locally, so he gave us a great time. He had to recast our first day totally due to bad weather, but still found a good alternative walk.

Most Inspirational Moment

Climbing to the summit of Vesuvius & even a little way into the crater, to stand by the monitoring equipment among steaming fumaroles.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Veriano was excellent. He is a local, and knew exactly where to take us & who to introduce us to. He was very helpful when group members had minor problems. At the same time, he was not too intrusive.

Advice for Potential Travellers

We felt we'd chosen a great time of year for our trip. Hotspots like Amalfi, Positano, Pompeii & Vesuvius were busy enough, & must be very crowded in high season. The lack of crowds more than made up for the odd bit of rain. Do take seriously the trip note advice about all the steps, particularly as very many of these are irregular rocky steps rather than even, man-made ones.

A fantastic holiday - Thank you!

I loved this holiday and would thoroughly recommend it. The lovely Level 2 walks were accurately described in the itinerary (apart from the paper mill being currently shut). I loved the way we did more than walk – we swam in the sea, ate ice-cream and then had a magical boat trip at dusk back to Amalfi after doing the Path of the Gods. The guides (both Stefano) at Vesuvius and Pompeii were excellent. We seemed to pack a lot in – more than we would have managed if we’d organised it ourselves. The three-star hotel was comfortable and the staff very friendly and welcoming. The food was good and sometimes excellent. It was fun to go into the kitchen on two evenings to “help” with the tiramisu and pizza. We didn’t need 2 first courses / primos a night, though, and often opted to drop one of the four courses or share one of each. I’ve done several Exodus trips now and Vania has been the best guide I’ve had so far. Generous with her time. The weather was mixed. Thank you for jigging the itinerary so that we did the Path of the Gods in beautiful weather. The cloud was down for Vesuvius so we didn’t see as much as we might have done. But the towns were not too busy and we were the only group in the hotel. It was never too hot! A lovely holiday – thank you!

Walking the Amalfi Coast

A great trip although sadly the weather was not good for half the week. Amalfi and Positano still very busy with day tripper tourists. Hotel was great and the food was very good.

Most Inspirational Moment

The views from the Walk of the Gods and Villa Cimbrone were fabulous. The walk around Vesuvius was fantastic. Felt it would have been nice to have a bit more time in Pompeii to see more of the site after the guided tour. The guides were excellent.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very good.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This trip is definitely not suitable for those who can’t manage lots of steep steps and descents. I felt that the walking pace was very slow due to members of the group not matching their perceived abilities with the demands of the walks.

Beautiful Amalfi coast!

It goes without saying the Amalfi coast really is stunning! All the places we visited had a picture postcard view and the weather was 100% perfect!

Most Inspirational Moment

The free day trip to Capri. Having travelled solo and meeting with four other solo ladies we quickly struck up a fantastic rapport from the beginning. We had many great times throughout the week however the day trip to Capri exceeded my expectations. Another special time was on the day of departure when the five of us ventured into Bomerano and found Agriturismo Il Pettirosso. An absolute gem! A little out of the way from the main town so not good in the sense of safe footpaths however the meal served was the most authentic and delicious meal of the week along with local wine. Perfecto!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Veriano is a very capable and knowledgeable group leader with a necessary quick sense of humour. The walks were relatively short compared to other holidays I have done so my only piece of constructive criticism would be to have more time spent enjoying the walk and less time in the extremely busy destinations of Amalfi and Positano. Both of these destinations are interesting and picturesque however the sheer volume of people takes away some of the beauty. Personally I would have preferred to have time to enjoy the views along the way than endure the chaos. The day we walked to Amalfi there was a cruise ship in the port and subsequently there was an overwhelming number of people. Veriano was quick to act of my request to escape by offering an alternative cove of Atrani. That made all the difference and we had a lovely little afternoon on the beach.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The trip notes are clear about the number of steps down. I would recommend taking at least one pole to relieve the stress on your knees. I don't normally have issue with steps however I was struggling on the second day, even with a pole. I wish I'd used it from the start and it would have made life more comfortable although it's always surprising how quickly the body is able to recover and by day three I was feeling stronger.
