Tips for exploring our world more sustainably

We are working hard to remove and reduce travel’s negative impacts, and proactively contribute to thriving nature and people across our trips. Here are some simple ways in which you can do the same on your adventures.

Responsible Travel Tips

Take a re-usable drink bottle

Exodus is working double-time to reduce the amount of plastic waste on our tours, from providing safe, boiled drinking water while camping to keeping a communal supply of water for your group to share. Bring a reusable water bottle with you and top it up. In destinations where drinkable water may not be easy to come by, consider re-usable bottles with a filtration system.

We’ve also partnered with Water-to-Go, who create durable filter bottles made from plants. Exodus travellers receive 15% off their purchase, while another 15% is donated to the Exodus Adventure Travels Foundation.

Pack travel mugs and food containers

Don’t just stop at your water bottle! Consider bringing re-usable travel mugs, cutlery, straws and tupperware for your journey, minimising plastic waste and keeping your destination beautiful for years to come,

We also recommend packing a re-usable tote bag to avoid the need for any plastic bag, and take any recyclable waste home with you if correct disposal facilities are not available.

Responsible Travel Tips

Pre-fill your toiletries

Take re-usable shampoo and shower gel bottles, pre-filled from home so that you don’t need to use any hotel single-use toiletries. Consider taking biodegradable and nature friendly toiletries, such as sunscreens which don’t contain oxybenzone, octocrylene and octinoxate, and nanoparticles of zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as these are damaging to marine habitats.

Where possible, avoid using single-use mini toiletries and plastic wrapped products, such as slippers or sealed tea bags

Watch your water usage

If you’re travelling to a destination where drought is common and tourism may put pressure on local water supply, try and have shorter showers, minimise hot water usage and use kettles less in your hotel rooms.

When you’re out and about, be mindful of flushing the wrong kind of waste that may contain plastic – such as wet wipes.

Turn the A/C off when vacating a room.

Responsible Travel Tips

Try train travel

If you’re travelling somewhere that you can reach on land, consider travelling by train, which uses 80% less carbon than flying.

To help, we’ve made it easy to take the train to many of our trips, through our partnership with Byway. This flexible option also allows you to stop in cities en route, extending your adventure, while also doing better for nature.

While on your adventure, seek alternative forms of transport such as local buses or trains instead of booking internal flights.

Responsible Travel Tips

Protect wildlife on your adventure

According to World Animal Protection, 550,000 wild animals are still being exploited for holidaymakers. To help protect wildlife on your adventure, avoid purchasing foods containing palm oil and souvenirs made from hardwoods such as ebony, mahogany, ivory, tortoiseshell of reptile skins – as these are linked to deforestation and animal cruelty.

You can also enable natural habitats to thrive when exploring, by keeping to official footpaths which decreases trampling and disturbance of local wildlife.

Responsible Travel Tips

Support local communities

Alongside supporting biodiversity and ecosystem regeneration, we can have a positive impact on our travels by supporting destination communities.

You can contribute to supporting local by choosing a locally owned restaurant when eating out, staying at locally owned hotels, and choosing local shops or marketplaces.

You can directly support and empower some of the communities you may meet across our destinations through the work of the Exodus Adventure Travels Foundation.

For more specific kit lists, you can refer to the packing list for your chosen itinerary in the detailed Trip Notes for each of our adventures (found on the dates and departures tab of every Exodus trip). We also have more tips and tricks on ways to give back to nature when travelling on our blog here.
