Comfort Levels Explained
At Exodus, we take great care in creating trips that provide exceptional travel experiences – and the places we stay are essential to this.
We use our local destination expertise to make the right accommodation choices, maximising comfort and value for money while keeping us close to the greatest adventures a destination has to offer. In some countries, the day-to-day standard of accommodation is largely determined by what’s available in the locations we feature on our itineraries.
To help you select a tour based on your preferences, we provide a detailed insight into the accommodation used on each trip and a summary of how many nights fall into each category. The overall Comfort Level is assigned as either Simple, Classic, Superior or Premium based on the majority of nights. In many cases we have chosen a mix of properties to showcase a destination, so you can expect to have some nights of a higher or lower category on most trips.
Here is what we mean by each category…
Simple
Some of our most adventurous trips feature simple accommodation, either because this allows us to stay in a remote location or is appropriate for the area visited. Simple could refer to mountain huts, homestays, camping, sleeper trains or boats. Where hotels or guesthouses fall into this category it maybe because there are shared facilities, multi-bedded rooms or limited hot water.
Rooms are typically modest. Examples include Nepalese tea houses (trekkers’ lodgers), family homestay accommodation or bunkhouses used whilst trekking.
Camping may vary from wild camping where we take our own facilities to well-equipped sites with hot showers. All camping is supported, so you are never expected to carry a tent. Participatory camping means the group help with camp chores, where as full-service camping means our crew take care of everything for you!
Classic
The name Classic is used to describe a broad array of accommodation including pensions, guesthouses and hotels with good hospitality. Classic accommodation could be small, family-run properties, chosen for their local character and location wherever possible, or larger hotels with occasional extras such as pools, lounge areas or a garden. Permanent tented camps with ensuite facilities are included within this range.
Accommodation in this category has the necessary amenities to be comfortable. In hot climates, either air conditioning or fans are typically provided. Rooms have private bathroom facilities as standard, with only the odd exception such as Japanese ryokans.
Star ratings often vary from country to country, but most of the properties in this category would be European two- or three-star. Any trip given a rating of Classic will have more than half of the nights in Classic accommodation.
Superior
Our Superior range features hotels and lodges that typically combine comfort, good amenities, character and service. Superior accommodation usually has an extra-special feature or two, such as a great location, well designed communal areas, extensive grounds, swimming pool, view or great restaurant.
Rooms are usually well kitted out with facilities and have air conditioning as standard where needed.
Star ratings often vary from country to country, but most of the hotels in this category would be four-star rated. Any trip given a rating of Superior will have more than half of the nights in Superior accommodation.
Premium
Our Premium range provides excellent levels of comfort and service, combining style and authenticity with a little bit of luxury.
Depending on your chosen adventure, you might stay in an Egyptian palace with views over the Nile, luxury Bedouin camp in the desert, comfortable safari lodge or design-led boutique hotel.
Typically, hotels are four- or five-star standard. On some Premium trips we may include some nights in a lower category where it enhances the adventure.
