Snowshoeing

Snowshoeing is one of the easiest ways to cross the frozen landscapes in Swedish Lapland. On our Lapland trips, you’ll get to explore the picturesque scenery that surrounds Rajamaa and learn about the local wildlife and nature. An expert guide leads you through forests and over frozen swamps in search of birds and fauna, sharing their knowledge about the flora that manages to withstand such harsh conditions. At the end of your snowshoeing excursion, you can warm up in a traditional Swedish sauna.

Dogsledding

Siberian huskies have long been an important part of the Lappish culture, being trained to draw sledges as a mean of transport across the snow. Our holidays to Lapland give you the opportunity to meet with these friendly dogs at a local dogsled centre and find out more about how they’re trained. Following instructions on how to steer the sledge, you’ll set off on a mushing adventure of a lifetime, racing through forests and over icy swamps. If you want to enjoy the ride as a passenger, you can take it in turns to drive, allowing you to appreciate the wintery scenery.

Forest Skiing

The forests of Swedish Lapland are totally enchanting with row upon row of thick fir trees weighed down by the snow, transforming the land into an extraordinary scene of frozen sculptures. Originally used in Russia and other Scandinavian countries, forest skis have been around for thousands of years, transporting people across the snow. Owing to the skins on the base of the skis, they can be used in deep snow and allow you to glide up or downhill.

Once you’ve familiarised yourself with the forest skis, you’ll embark on a thrilling two-day expedition deep into the forests of Swedish Lapland.

This was the best vacation we’ve ever had. There were four things that made this vacation absolutely outstanding:
First: the location- between the Northern lights and the snowy forest and river landscapes, this place is heaven on earth.
Second: the guides- Janne and Lars made this a really special trip. It’s clear that they love their jobs and their location. Lars makes all of the bread fresh daily and his kitchen staff is so talented. All of the food was delicious. Janne is such a great outdoorsman (Janne was our main guide for the trip)- it was so neat hearing of all of the training experiences he’s had. They were both so knowledgable about all of the wildlife in the area.
Third: the activities. The activities were so great! The snowshoeing and cross-country skiing was challenging and fun. I loved them both, and I even had time to improve my new skiing skills over the trip (my husband wants to continue in our winters at home!). Then the dog-sledding, reindeer-sleighing and learning about the Sami culture and visiting with a Sami reindeer herder were once-in-a-lifetime experiences. They were amazing, and I will never forget them.
Finally, the fourth thing that made this trip fabulous was: the group. I wonder if Exodus just calls to people who you really want to spend time with. We loved the entire group, and they made this vacation amazing. They were supportive in all of our falling-down efforts, no one felt they had to outdo anyone else, and our evenings of downtime while we chased the Northern lights were all so much fun! We’ll definitely book with Exodus again!

The week is a mixture of activities, snowshoeing, dog sledding, reindeer’s and forest skiing through the amazing arctic wilderness. You stay in a chalet and eat and have talks in a main building. The hosts are all amazing as is the food.

What a fantastic week , full of excitement and plenty of adventure . The Northern lights came out within a couple of hours of us arriving and our trip was off to an amazing start. We had great fun out snow shoeing , this place is hard to describe you are on an island , surrounded by trees and snow . It’s is so peaceful there was nobody else here but the group and the air is so clean and dry. The reindeer ride to the Sami house went on for over an hour each way , and we gained lots of insight into the lives of the Sami people . The dog sledding was truly amazing and we were out for a few hours without meeting anyone, cutting across lakes of fresh snow. Finally the forest ski trip and an overnight stay to sleep in the forest hut was a true delight -30 with a couple of log burners to keep us warm and cutting the ice to access water from the lake , miles away from anywhere. Lars had non stop information on the wildlife and the local area , each night we had an interesting talk on a different predator – bear, wolverine etc
