Northern Portugal’s Douro Valley is renowned for its stunning landscapes and world-famous wine production. This picturesque region is home to terraced vineyards that cascade down the hillsides, creating a mesmerizing mosaic of greenery, with the Douro River winding its way through the heart of the valley, adding to its charm and providing a scenic backdrop for exploration. With its rich history, captivating beauty, and delicious wines, the Douro Valley offers a truly unforgettable experience for travelers, as Adventure Specialist Kyra Rose discovered on her recent Portugal: Walking and Wine Adventure.

The first full day of Kyra’s adventure took her to one of the standout locations of the trip: the Corgo River Trail. This captivating hiking route follows the meandering path of the river, providing glimpses of its tranquil waters and lush vegetation. “It has some of the best views,” said Kyra, “with the rolling valley filled with vineyards that run so steep throughout the region and bursts of color from the wild roses and small villages scattered all along the trails.”

This trail also gave a glimpse into the lives of the hard-working local farmers who continue to carry on Portugal’s long-standing wine making traditions. “The farmers are out in the vineyards from dusk till dawn every day, working hard in some of the most difficult terrain and weather.” The group ate like locals on the trail, where “typically lunch is a sandwich with fresh baked bread in a large flat pan, almost like a flatbread, with cod and seasoning together. Our lunch box was a traditional cod sandwich that was so good!”

Another standout landmark for Kyra was the Senhora da Graça chapel, located in the Basto Region, a mere 45-minute drive away from the Douro Valley but vastly different in terms of landscape and vegetation– and home to a different wine tradition, Portugal’s famous vinho verde. The Senhora da Graça chapel and monument stands atop a 1,000-meter-high granite mountain. “You are able to see the chapel from throughout the region, as it has overlooked over the area since the 15th century,” says Kyra. Along with its beautiful architecture and deep history, this iconic site provides panoramic views and remains an important pilgrimage site, attracting visitors from far and wide.

The tour’s focus was on walking and on wine, with plenty of opportunities for both! Beyond the Corgo River Trail, Kyra also explored four charming villages along the Maronesa walking trail, the banks of the Cargil River, and the Levada de Vilarinho, a 13th-century waterway, as well as the grounds and cellars of several wineries.

Among the unexpected discoveries on the trip was Quinta das Escomoeiras vineyard, a hidden gem nestled in the Mondim de Basto region. “That was my favorite place that we visited. It is very much only really known to most locals.” This lesser-known destination captivated everyone on the tour, extending their stay beyond the scheduled time due to the enchanting ambiance, warm hospitality, and delicious organic vinho verde.

Alongside its famous wines, Portugal’s culinary delights also made a lasting impression. During a private lunch at Quinta do Tedo on day three, the group indulged in a feast of fresh fish, fruits, vegetables, and salads.  However, it was the dessert that stole the show – an orange cake. “I had never had it before, but it has quickly become my favorite, and our group was lucky enough to have a secret family recipe shared!”

The tour guides, Lina and Antonio, went above and beyond to ensure an exceptional experience for the group throughout the trip, and especially when it came to finding the most delicious spots to eat. Upon arrival in Porto, the group stopped at the Tram restaurant, where they were treated to Pastel de Nata, beer, and ice cream on a hot day. The guides also shared a local tip – sprinkling cinnamon on the Pastel de Nata, a delightful twist that elevated the flavors. A farewell dinner at A Lojinha Da Quinta in the Basto region also surprised everyone with its hidden gem status, offering an unforgettable dining experience. “It was one of the best restaurants I have ever been to, and it was a nice surprise from our guides,” said Kyra.
