Walking the Island of La Palma

An excellent week’s walking in dramatic landscapes with a sociable group.

Most Inspirational Moment

Hard to choose between the initial views from the Rochas de los Muchachos at the start of the Caldera walk and the views down into the Caldera at the start of the descent into the Taburiente National Park.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Miguel was a very effective, chatty and organised leader.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Walking poles extremely useful for the long ups and downs, mostly on gravelly or rocky paths. Take high-factor sun block and plenty of water; we found few springs to top up at. The east coast can be covered in thick cloud and mist while the west is sunny and warm; take layers and a waterproof on walks. The days aren't very long, but are quite tough going. Get fit before you go.

A fantastic country filled with lovely people!

I loved Sri Lanka, but found the heat hard work on a poorly chest and tummy. I was ill for the whole two weeks plus on returning home, but I at least managed to do a bit of cycling.

Most Inspirational Moment

I loved the gorgeous scenery of the train ride from Kandy to Nuwara Elya, although I felt ill! The downhill cycling, the tea plantations, the Indian Ocean resort - it was all magical.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The support boys were fantastic - absolutely faultless and hard working. Suresh is a nice guy and obviously knows organisation stuff, and delivered a lovely two weeks. If I had to find a criticism of him it is that he didn't give us much in the way of general talks on the culture/history of Sri Lanka. Maybe he was a bit jaded with it all after 157 previous trips, but I felt he could have said more about the places we visited, not only in the evening before's talk but on the bus and bikes when we went somewhere. We didn't seem to know why we were looking at something or going somewhere a lot of the time. I only knew about places because of reading the trip notes, but as a local, I wanted him to tell me more, and really sell Sri Lanka to us. I've been on a number of these trips, and usually a lot more is told to you.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack light and maybe read up about the country before you go. I didn't have time, but feel that having been there, I don't really know much more about it than before I went.

Patagonian Highlights

Overall we enjoyed the trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

Perito Moreno Glacier

Thoughts on Group Leader

Tomas Toro was very supportive and helpful

Advice for Potential Travellers

Prepare well before holiday to enjoy it fully . For many weeks before the start of our holiday we walked for 2 hours in morning and 2 hours in evening whenever we could . However , this was not enough aswe practiced on flat ground and we found it tough walking uphill in Patagonia . Be prepared for very strong gusts of wind .

Walking the Amalfi Coast

mix of walks along beautiful coast with trips to Pompeii, Herculanium and towns

Most Inspirational Moment

Mt Vesuvius

Thoughts on Group Leader

Veriano was superb, always kept a careful eye, changed itinerary to reflect the weather, ensured we had appropriate stops and water breaks, was kind, thoughtful and knowledgeable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

lots of steps but not difficult walking

Hard work, great fun, good company

The grade 2 holiday was challenging enough for me. The temperature was a bit high for really good conditions but Michele, the Group Leader, made sure we went to the best places. The hotel was very good and the food high quality., as were our lunch stop restaurants. The group had mixed experience but Michele coped well with this.

Most Inspirational Moment

Going down the steeper downhills - without falling.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Lovely! He worked very hard to make sure we had the best experience. I also felt my techniques improved with his teaching.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Check the brochure for skills level requirements. Be prepared for the group to have varying skills/ experience.

A great walking experience on the Amalfi Coast

Well organised walks, expertly led by the Italian Guide, Veriano.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking round the crater of Vesuvius

Thoughts on Group Leader

Veriano

Advice for Potential Travellers

Walks are great but can be a bit challenging, however the guide stopped frequently and none are too long.

Daily delights

A new trip that exceeded expectations. Early starts for birds and sunrises and fascinating insights ( and climbs!) into Mayan culture, finishing with Caribbean laid back vibe and a day swimming with nurse sharks and rays!

Most Inspirational Moment

Every day brought memorable moments, from sunset boat trip at Bird's Eye View, listening to and watching Howler Monkeys, the sunrise from Temple IV at Tikal and snorkeling with nurse sharks and rays, and seeing a manatee.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jorge was great. Shared his knowledge and passion for Belize, history, culture, and his expert knowledge of birds and the flora and fauna of Belize. We loved his sunrise birding walks. He also gave us a guided tour of Cathal Pech and a market tour on our free day. You couldn't ask for a more helpful, supportive, knowledgeable guide. Luis Fillippe, our guide in Tikal was superb, bringing Mayan culture to life and a great bird spotter too. Keldon, our driver was careful and we felt relaxed on the bus.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Read the trip notes which were helpful. If on the group flight to Houston be careful boarding the correct Hotel bus...there is a North and South Hotel and the bus is not clearly marked..we ended up at the wrong hotel late at night! United Airlines include Belize departure tax in the ticket. Purified Water was available on the minibus and hotels to refill water bottles, no problem. Our 'Keen' closed toe sandals ideal for walking to Caves Branch Rover tubing and Rio waterfalls wading through rivers. Sunscreen ( reef safe) and insect repellent a must. US dollars accepted everywhere in Belize and we used our credit card in hotels. Credit card also in Guatemala although money changers came onto bus at the border to change dollars to Quetzales if needed.

Finding the ghost of the mountains

This is my second time to Ladakh for snow leopard spotting and both times have been incredible.

The landscape, people and wildlife are incredible and matched by the dedication of Valerie and her team to ensure you enjoy your time here and have the best wildlife spotting opportunities.

It can get cold and you should pay careful attention to the trip notes, bring plenty of layers and be prepared to trek and work for your sightings, but those sightings are the stuff of magic.

The homestay and festival visit are a great extra to the wildlife too, giving you an insight into local life and culture.

Lastly the food provided by the local team is excellent and plentiful, with Johnny the chef’s culinary delights being worth the trip evenif you didn’t have the wildlife.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing a mother snow leopard with her two yearling cubs hunting and caring for her family.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Valerie is simply peerless in her abilities to lead this trip and her passion for Ladakh. She was simply the best and a big feature in our success and the group having such a great time on expedition.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Ensure you have a suitable sleeping bag and many layers of clothes rather than improvising with a 3 season bag or one or two bulky layers. The weather can go from warm in the sun when trekking to very cold as the sun disappears. Your enjoyment depends on you being comfortable in both.

Historical wonders at every turn

This was overall very good, with so many wonderful historic sites to explore and gaze in awe at the immense pyramids/temples and intricately decorated tombs. For me, the Cairo part of the trip should be redesigned, and the number of optional trips greatly reduced (there are too many half/not full -even if described as such- days, with optional extras) with more incorporated into the trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

It is hard to pick just one. My favourites were probably the tomb of Seti in the Valley of the Kings and going inside the pyramid of Cheops (note that these were both optional extras but there were many inspiring moments in the standard itinerary)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ahmed/Saleem was very good and clearly passionate about Egypt and it's wonderful history. He took very good care of the group overall . Despite his best efforts, I sometimes found it difficult to follow his explanations, and it is hard to know whether it was more him or the itinerary to blame for an issue at some sites when he would rush us around too quickly to take everything in, discouraging many photo's at that point, and then give free time to go back over a large area with insufficient time to take as many photo's as we might wish. He was not very well for several days but tried to ensure that this did not detract from our enjoyment, and he went out of his way to help when anyone had a problem.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Despite the likelihood that you might find some parts of the trip exasperating/exhausting, do not miss it! There are a lot of additional extras - optional extra trips, tips, meals which are not included etc came to around £400 each for us. Abu Simbel is well worth the effort - though there is no reason we could see for it to require the very early morning set off - we think the itinerary could be changed to allow an afternoon visit Despite the group leader (thankfully) dealing with most tips, there is still a need for tips virtually every time you go to the toilet and some difficulty keeping enough small change for this.

Not quite as expected

A good trip overall but NOT if you are expecting to see the ‘beauty of Vietnam’. Far too much time based in major cities with long bus trips in and out of them to try to get to some more rural areas. Lots of air pollution in cities and plastic rubbish in waterways even in Ha Long Bay.

Most Inspirational Moment

Kayaking on Da Bac reservoir ( an optional extra)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Duy was excellent. Felt very safe and cared for and he remained positive and keen despite having had no time off since his last trip and some early starts.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do NOT book this trip if you are keen to do trekking, cycling or kayaking as there is very little of this and lots of sitting on buses in traffic. If you do book the trip take padded cycling shorts and gel seat covers for the bikes- we did and they were very helpful.
