Fascinating exploration of Southern India

Southern India is less well known than the golden triangle – but that’s why this trip is so special. It shows you a new side to this amazing country. The Keralan backwaters showed us wonderful wildlife and opened our eyes to the culture and life of the local people. An excellent blend of nature and culture, we made new discoveries every day.

Most Inspirational Moment

So many to choose from - the early morning walk around Madurai finishing with the Meenaskshi temple visit, walking and boating through the Periyar wildlife sanctuary, (loved the otters!) and the houseboat backwater cruise. Then there were the unexpected encounters - especially the Hindu festival in full swing as we drove past a temple. Our driver pulled in and we were welcomed in and shown where to stand to get a good view by the worshippers who greeted us with smiles.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Biju was an absolute star, anticipating our requirements, going the extra mile unasked, always cheerful, a terrific ambassador for the state of Kerala. Our driver Vinod, was great too.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If, like us, you've only done the golden triangle and think you know India - you don't. Come and try Kerala - a different experience. Take the option al trip on the last day and travel down to the tip of India - it rounded off a really great holiday.

Still reeling !

This was an action packed tour with not a moment lost, traversing a great selection of Vietnamese coutryside and towns.
Each day was breakfast at six, cycle and bus via interesting sights to the next town, dinner, hotel (with a couple of two nighters and an eye-opening train sleeper). At times exhausting, which enhanced camaraderie with the rest of the group (six solos, six couples).
The quality of the bikes and the provision of en-route refreshments was superb, as were the hotels. It was such a varied and full-on trip that I’ve come away with a head full of great memories and a pretty good knowledge of Vietnam.

Most Inspirational Moment

The local kids yelling Hello! and holding out their hands to be clapped as we cycled past.

Thoughts on Group Leader

When describing places we were visiting, Lam spoke passionately about his country, its people and history . His depth of knowledge and way of speaking was very engaging. He was patient and generous with his time to anyone who had a question or needed help. For example, on a tour of a temple he came over and we had a nice chat as we walked back to the group. Another day, I was waiting with the group as Lam went to find a missing member who was late returning from a temple. He came back chatting happily with the guy - I then realised that earlier he had retrieved me because I was late back, and I didn't even know!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Going solo was a slight concern for me but getting to know other group members was very easy.

Cycling - The Best Way to Experience Kerala!

I had a truly memorable week as part of a group of six, who cycled a total of 134 miles (215 km) from Willingdon Island, Fort Kochi to Varkala.

The weather was georgeous and the scenery and food amazing. The sights and sounds of the real Kerala could not be experienced in a better way.

Shibu our tour leader and Kingsley our mini bus driver and support assistant made it so easy just to relax and soak everything up. The support vehicle was always present to provide regular water top ups and snacks and always drove a good distance behind the last cyclist, (frequently me) so there was never any pressure to speed up.

There are seemingly no rules of the road in India.! Lorries, cars, taxis, tuk tuks, motor bikes and cyclists simply move along in incredible harmony , somehow avoiding each other and the numerous animals and pedestrians occupying the streets, by sounding horns and bells constantly. Unlike European drivers, this is done in a very non aggressive way and is simply to alert other road users of a vehicles presence. You soon learn to join in with your bicycle bell!

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling through towns and communities and experiencing the genuine friendliness and excitement of locals of all ages calling out and waving to our group as we passed through.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Shibu was an excellent tour leader. He briefed everybody clearly on where we were going and how far we were cycling. He broke each ride up into stages, so that we always knew the distances and times between stops and breaks. If we needed to negotiate a challenging junction, he ensured that everybody crossed safely. He also allowed individual group members to ride at their own pace, which I particularly enjoyed.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I was a little apprehensive about coping with the distances, as I am a very infrequent and casual cyclist at home, having never done more than 20 miles. Three of the group were keen cyclists and two of the others had opted for electric bikes, whereas I had a standard bike. I needn’t have worried, as the routes were all flat, apart from the odd bridge and the final day exploring Varkala, which was quite hilly. I was lucky enough that day to borrow an electric bike from one of the group who opted out and was so impressed with the assistance it provided, I would definitely recommend one to anybody in two minds about considering this trip.

Walking in Andalucia - First Group of 2024

A really enjoyable holiday despite the potential for disruption caused by the farmers’ road blocks, deftly avoided by Michael, our very knowledgable guide, and his network of ‘spies’. A good variety of walks, nicely paced to accommodate the mixed ability within the group. The day off in Sevilla is a must, as is the optional trip to Ronda. As an add-on consider exploring Malaga, if you’ve not been before. It’s well worth the effort, and if slotted in before the walking begins, as I did, gently eases you into holiday mode.

Most Inspirational Moment

Everybody raves about the Caminito del Rey - it is spectacular, but a bit too processional for my liking - a bit like attending a 'Bob the Builder' sponsored walk (everyone has to wear blue protective hats). For me the best walk was the trip into the Grazalema mountains. Slightly more challenging underfoot maybe, but well worth the effort. Due to the re-arrangement of itinerary caused by the farmers' shenanigans it was the last walk of the holiday, and it was a fitting end to a great week. I just wish the whole group could have witnessed it - by then covid had cruelly split us into positives and negatives!

Thoughts on Group Leader

This is my third walking holiday in Spain, and every leader has been passionate about their neck of the woods. And Michael is no exception. He really tried hard, and succeeded, in overcoming everything that was thrown at us during the week. Algamitas, the neighbouring village, is not a tourist hot spot (thank God), but Michael has built up good relations with the locals. We had coffees in the village cafes at the beginning of two of our walks. His knowledge of the local fauna and flora is impressive, and his enthusiasm for it is infectious. He also gave us top tips of where to visit in Sevilla, and organised a really nice tapas lunch too.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If travelling in the Winter months, make sure that your gear is up to scratch. We had a good downpour on the first day, fortunately after we'd had our tapas lunch, and quite a lot of us had leaky kit by the time we got back to the hotel!

An amazing introduction to a wonderful country

This holiday was hard work, busy busy, busy, but goodness me it was worth the 6 a.m. starts and hours in the bus to see so much of a country that could justly claim to be a little bit of paradise on earth.

Most Inspirational Moment

When a hawksbill turtle surfaced an arm's length away from me.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a universal sink plug if you plan to do your own laundry (although the Drake Bay Wilderness hotel offered free laundry service). Good hiking shoes are essential but you don't really need boots. A lightweight, breathable waterproof is essential.

Spectacular winter walking

We had a fantastic week snowshoeing in the Dolomites. The scenery was amazing and the walks varied each day. We were lucky to be accompanied by a lovely group of fellow snowshoers and Jeffery our guide was knowledgeable, friendly and very well organised. The hotel Adler is a treat to stay in with a huge choice of breakfast to set you up for the day and a substantial evening meal. Walking in snowshoes is not technically difficult but when you sink into deep snow it can get a little tiring although it is also very amusing! We were lucky to have some fresh snow at the start of our holiday and then blue skies for the rest of the week. The walks are at an altitude where I should imagine there’s usually snow but sometimes you need to wear micro spikes rather than snowshoes. The days are full and are all in different locations so you get to see lots of stunning views.

Most Inspirational Moment

Difficult to choose as there were many, but very much enjoyed reaching the top of Strudelkopft and the stunning view.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jeffery was great. He was very concerned for the safety and wellbeing of all the group and was well organised. He was also good company with a good sense of humour. He was also able to tell us lots of interesting facts about the local area & its flora and fauna.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be reasonably fit for this holiday to get the most out of it. If you need to buy any additional clothing or equipment while you are there it is worth the 10 min bus ride to Dobbiacco as there’s quite a few shops there.

Wonderful variety of wildlife in stunning scenery

We went on the 15 prearranged game drives plus two extra ones at end January/start of February. We saw leopard at Pench on two drives, but not elsewhere. Saw tiger(s) at each of the three NPs on 7 of our 17 game drives, which is maybe fewer sightings than some other reports in April. What made this trip special for me was the overall variety of stunning wildlife & scenery. 18 different mammals seen & 81 different bird species. The variety of habitats with open grassland & wetland/freshwater greatly added to the interest.
The standard of accommodation was very good (except for the first night at the Bloom Hotel) even at the NP lodges, despite the terrible air pollution (see below).

Most Inspirational Moment

As reported by others the sightings of tiger & leopard were fabulous, but what I remember most is at the very end of our last game drive seeing a jungle cat near the NP exit (similar to a Scottish wildcat). Expect the unexpected. Also enjoyed seeing a pack of wild dogs hunting next to the track. Also saw jackal, gaur, various monkeys, various deer & antelope, wild boar, mongoose, squirrel, tree shrew & tortoise. It is a great trip for ornithologists. We saw various species of kingfisher, vulture, eagle, kite, buzzard, owl, cuckoo, nightjar, hornbill, stork, woodpecker, shrike, oriole etc etc.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Krishna was fantastic. He is an expert ornithologist & photographer, great at spotting & identifying the wildlife. Extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife & culture and always ready & willing to pass on his passion, knowledge & expertise. The trip was very well organised & professionally run. He was always patient & ever helpful combined with a great sense of humour. He is a star. I particularly enjoyed the extra events which Krishna arranged & lead eg the guided walk at Pench NP, the visit to the local village at Kanha NP & the filmshow about Bandhavgarh NP.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Being January/early February it was extremely cold travelling in the open topped jeeps early in the morning eg 5am. I wore 5 layers and was still cold (t-shirt, shirt, jumper, fleece, jacket plus hat, scarf, gloves). Each accommodation hands out a blanket, but I needed two and sometimes there were not enough blankets for everyone to have two each. The tracks in each NP are very dusty. The villages around the accommodation and near the NP entrances cook using open wood fires, which makes the air condition very polluted. Delhi is appalling for smog in winter. Therefore I wore a facemask quite often and wish that I had brought a balaclava. It helps to wear a windproof jacket in the jeep, but one you don't mind getting covered in dust. Earplugs are necessary not just for the overnight train, but also in the lodges because on some nights there was loud music & drumming coming from adjacent properties. Krishna arranged for a foreign exchange company to come to our hotel on the first night of the tour and he exchanged various currencies into Indian rupees at a very good rate for us, which was a great help and saved us having to find a foreign exchange place ourselves. We didn't change money at the airport due to the poor rates on offer. For the local flight from Delhi to Nagpur, Krishna was fantastic because he managed to combine all our luggage together in a way which balanced out the overweight bags with the underweight ones so that no excess luggage fees were paid, despite our luggage being significantly overweight! We added on an extra night stay in Delhi at the start & at the end. This helped with getting over the jet lag at the start and gave us extra time for sightseeing at the end. The mosquitoes were worst at Pench NP but also occurred at the other two NPs. Several group members had quite a few bites, but we didn't take malaria pills and we appear to be none the worse. The additional game drive at Pench was a waste of time & money because we saw very little. However the extra game drive at Bandhavgarh NP was fantastic because we saw a beautiful sector which others didn't go to and we had great sightings of tiger. When the guide sat at the front of the jeep and I was in the back row (or vice-versa), I had difficulty hearing what the guide was saying. Therefore I found it best to sit in the middle row because my hearing is not so good anymore.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us and we were thrilled to learn that you had such an enjoyable time in India overall, with plentiful wildlife sightings. We are also grateful for your suggestions, as we rely on our customers’ feedback to improve our tours for future groups. Addressing some of your specific points, we, regrettably, had to make a last-minute change to one of your hotels as we discovered that our usual property was hosting a wedding that coincided with your dates, with late night celebrations planned. We always endeavour to replace hotels with others of a similar standard, so we are sorry that the Bloom fell below your expectations in several areas. Though we don’t anticipate using it often, we have raised your concerns with the management team and hope this will prevent similar issues for future guests. Next, we appreciate that our customers enjoy rotating between the jeeps during the game drives, so we were sorry to hear that this did not happen particularly often on your tour. We secure the vehicles four months before a departure, to ensure availability, and our local team decides who to place together. Though there is some scope to move these people around on each drive, as they are all on the same booking, anyone who books after this process has been done cannot switch as they are treated as a separate booking and strict park rules prevent bookings from mixing. We take our commitments to responsible travel extremely seriously, so we were concerned to learn that you felt there were too many vehicles tracking tigers and that the noise and nature of the driving disturbed the animals. In recent years, Indian authorities have significantly reduced the number of available permits, thus limiting traffic within national parks, and closely monitor their activity using trackers and speed recorders. Though drivers will occasionally speed to a possible sighting, our leaders always inform them in advance to be respectful to the national park and are careful to ensure they do not exceed any speed limits or take unnecessary risks with our customers on board. Finally, we hugely appreciate your comments about our trip notes, as we like to keep our literature as up-to-date as possible, and we have made amendments regarding face coverings, the bird identification app, clothing required for cooler temperatures and money exchange. We will also be adding information about the ‘pack with a purpose’ scheme as this is something we are rolling out on all our trips. We hope this shows you that we have listened to your feedback, and we very much look forward to, hopefully, welcoming you back on another adventure soon!

Fantastic country, trip and experience

We toured Costa Rica as a couple in a group of ten in January 2024. Our guide Jorge Diaz did a fantastic job of showing us many of the different sights, sounds and experiences his country has to offer.

Most Inspirational Moment

Quetzal spotting. Early start and cold but they do have magnificent plumage.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent. Also a shout out to the driver Robinson

Advice for Potential Travellers

Sit back and let the guide show you what his wonderful country has. We could not have seen a fraction of what we did without Jorge. Anything we were interested in he would take time out to explain or visit - like adding the trip on the Crocodile River on the way to Manuel Antonio or stopping for lunch at the craft brewery outside Monteverde.

Don’t just go to see the Northern Lights.

Despite some clear skies the solar activity was low so we did not managed to see the Northern Lights on our tour in Feb 2024. Despite this there is lots packed into this short tour including seeing the sights of the so called Golden Circle (Gullfoss Waterfall; Geysir & Pingvellir) as well as the stunning glacier lagoon and black sand beaches. The highlight however was the walk on the glacier. The weather was perfect so we also managed to get into the ice cave.

Most Inspirational Moment

One truly unique sight on this tour was on the first morning, as we were leaving Reykjavik, the latest volcanic eruption had just started on the Reykjanes peninsula, so our guide took us to a vantage point on the outskirts of Reykjavik so we got a view of it ! Of the scheduled items on the itinerary the glacier walk was the highlight!

Thoughts on Group Leader

David was excellent. As well as doing all the driving he provided lots of insight into the Icelandic culture and commentary on the unique features of this amazing country. He went out of his way to show us the volcanic eruption on the first day of the tour as well as making sure we still fitted in everything on the scheduled itinerary!

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would say don’t go on this tour if your only reason is to see the Northern Lights. It is a natural phenomenon and can be quite difficult to see. However do go if you want to see all the other things on the itinerary. For me I would say that the glacier walk was the highlight.

Winter walking in Sudtirol / Alto Adige

This was our first winter trip with Exodus, and our first Premium Adventure. We had a great time. The weather was excellent, and snow conditions better than we had expected. There was relatively little snowshoeing because the snow was compacted and there had been freeze/thaw conditions before we arrived, but Jenny, the leader, had arranged micro-spikes for us to fit over our boots which were brilliant – the feeling of confidence they give even on sheet ice is remarkable. We were able to do all of the treks planned and even managed a more extensive walk on one of the days because we were managing so well on the terrain. The group worked very well – there were a range of abilities but all taken account of. We had to be organised in the morning for a prompt departure at 8.30 but we all managed. The hotel was simply superb -the meals were outstanding and the staff attentive and friendly.

Most Inspirational Moment

The views... eg of the Tre Cime from the Monte Piano plateau equal with, The private evening meal held in the wine cellar of the hotel only for our group.
