Cycle the Baltics

A most enjoyable and informative holiday. The tour leader Lukas was very knowledgeable on the history of the three countries and was passionate in sharing that knowledge.

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling through villages where the locals were all industriast in growing flowers and vegetables in their very tidy and neatly laid out gardens.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Lukas was exceptional in the amount of knowledge that he had to hand each day, in respect of which ever country we were in at the time. He was always conscious of health & safety and aware of the various abilities of his group. Lukas was anxious that we were informed of the best eating places and went the extra mile by taking us to them and joining us on several occasions.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure that you choose a holiday suited to your ability if looking for an adventure holiday, this will ensure that you and your fellow travellers take the most enjoyment on offer.

Cycling the Baltics

A great trip. Lovely countryside to cycle through(mostly flat) The scenery was through forest and along the coast in national parks with quaint villages. The cranes nesting atop trees cut off for them were lovely to see. The cities we visited, Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius were all fantastic with plenty of atmosphere and plenty to see in the historic and architecturally restored old towns.

Most Inspirational Moment

I loved cycling down the Curonian Spit in Lithuania knowing that Russia was just a few kilometres away. Cycling up hill and down dale through a beautiful landscape to Traika Castle was also very good,

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was very pleasant and helpful, keen to do his best for us in arranging picnics and getting us to try different local specialities. He was very knowledgeable about the history of the Baltic States, particularly Lithuania and gave us as much information as we wanted.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You can't rely on the weather in June. I thought it was going to be warm but it was quite cold and rainy to start with, and then suddenly became hot towards the end. Make sure you take clothing to cover all weathers.

CYCLE THE BALTICS

This trip provides an informative, especially from a historical and political perspective, insight into the Baltic States. Experience it for yourself now and your perspective will change. Plus these countries will change and evolve in the coming years. The relaxed but still very busy trip, combines a balanced mix of exercise, scenery, history, architechture and an introduction to the three countries.

Most Inspirational Moment

The cycle ride down the Curonian Spit a Unesco site.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Because of circumstances we had two guides (Polish) who spoke perfect English and were well versed especially from an historical point of view.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You will not be totally fed on dumplings and pork. The food may come as a surprise as will the quality of the accommodation

CYCLE THE BALTICS

A well planned trip visiting the three Baltic Countries which have successfully emerged from being states of the USSR and now showing their individual characteristics. Cycling is an ideal way to see the Countries away from the big cities.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Countryside is mostly flat and the traffic light so cycling was not a problem and we did not cycle in any of the large cities. The distances of a maximum of 50kms per day were easily manageable. I am not a cyclist but a runner and although I had done some cycle training before the holiday, I had no problem with the cycling. A measure of fitness is required for this trip. The Cities of Tallinn, Riga and Villinius are interesting and my only criticism of the trip is that insufficient time was allowed to visit these places and if you have the time available, I would recommend arriving a day earlier than the trip and leaving a day later. The tour araound Cecis Casle could be dropped in favour of an earlier departure for Riga.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We had two Group Leaders, Petyr met us in Tallinn and stayed to Lielupa and then Tomas took over for the remainder of the trip. Both Leaders were satisfactory but lacked the sprak of enthusiasm usually associated wth Exodus leaders.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just as you are approaching Klaipeda you use a cycle track which is fast but a post has been broken off leaving about three inches protruding in the middle of the track. I did not see it and fell off the cycle breaking my collar bone and severely bruising myself. The Lithuanian A&E was excellent and I did not have to pay anything as I had the E111 card.Beware of that post, I am sure that all the potential leaders of this trip will be warned of its existence now and hopefully the local Company are putting pressure on the Klapedia authorities to saw off the post to ground level.

CYCLE THE BALTICS

A really excellent holiday that takes in some amazing countries and scenery. Everything about this holiday was great from the cities of Tallin, Riga and Vilnius to the Curonian Strait, beatiful beaches and lakes galore. The quality of the food and the accommodation was also surprisingly good.

CYCLE THE BALTICS

Good trip for covering 3 countries in 11 days but very disappointing to find that the terrain was extremely flat so certainly not moderate in terms of difficulty.  Should be regraded to easy.

Most Inspirational Moment

Picturesque towns and cities in all 3 countries and staying at a Manor House in Estonia.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Piotr was a good leader with clear instructions.  Thomas replaced Piotr for the second half of the trip so although he bonded with the group quickly some members of the group decided to do their own thing which led to a widely dispersed group which was harder to handle.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Good trip for those who like flat terrain and virtually no hills.

Cycle the Baltics

Cycling along the coast

Most Inspirational Moment

Lucas was a very informed personable leader: The Coach driver, who's name I have forgotten was fantastic, helpful, safe, always ready to adjust the bikes

Thoughts on Group Leader

Try to have more lunch time picnics: too much time wasted on long lunch breaks

Advice for Potential Travellers

Transfers far too long and the heavy German back pedal brake bikes need to be replaced

Reply from Exodus

We would like to thank Andrea for posting a review about her recent cycling holiday to the Baltics; we really appreciate client feedback and are working to improve the issues Andrea has raised. As this trip covers a lot of ground, some long transfers are needed, but we feel that most clients enjoy viewing the scenery on the way. The fleet of bikes is going to be replaced for next season (2015), so we expect that this will make the cycling much more enjoyable. We certainly agree that it would be good to have more picnic lunches during this trip and we will endeavour to put more emphasis on this for future departures. Cycle the Baltics

A good cycling trip, visiting amazing places (especially Tallinn and Riga) that was let down by the poor quality of the bikes, arriving to towns too late to visit the places of interest and inaccuracies in the trip notes.

Most Inspirational Moment

Spending a day in Riga, seeing a wild beaver in the city park, the amazing architecture and the site of the very first Christmas tree. Witches Hill was also impressive.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very friendly, knowledgeable, sociable and eager to please and support the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Apparently Lithuania translates as Land of the Rain and it certainly lived up to its name, perhaps we were unfortunate with the weather but definitely bring your wet weather gear. Also the currency in Latvia is the Euro and not the Latvian Lat as the trip notes state (Estonia and Latvia have the Euro and Lithuania still has Litas - though they too are scheduled to move to the Euro in 2015)

Reply from Exodus

We’re glad that Grad enjoyed his cycling trip overall, but are sorry that he didn’t feel the bikes provided were the most suitable. We have been using traditional European upright bikes for this trip which, whilst we agree may be a bit heavy, we have generally found to be suitable for the flat terrain. We are, however, looking into the bikes used on this trip. An Exodus staff member has recently joined a departure of this trip and has subsequently made recommendations about lunch stops and suggested improvements for the trip notes which we hope will benefit future clients.

CYCLE THE BALTICS

A great cycling route let down by very poor quality bikes and an inexperienced leader.

Most Inspirational Moment

The view from the hotel rooftop bar in Riga.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Out of his depth.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Expect to eat lots of potatoes and ham.
