Cycling from Split to Dubrovnik

Some short / medium distance cycling, up and down hills, surrounded by stunning scenery during the day with wonderful sightseeing, food and drink in the evening.

Most Inspirational Moment

Dubrovnik old town is a stunning place to end the trip and there were loads of pretty villages/towns on the way there. Two places that stood out in particular were Hvar and Korcula. Then of course there is the absolutely amazing coast line in-between. Oh and yes the speed boat to Mljet island and cycling around the lakes. Basically every day was great!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ana was fantastic. She was very friendly and chatty; she knew lots of great places to eat and was really enthusiastic and passionate about her country. One of the best Exodus leaders I’ve met.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Whilst the cycling in relatively short each day it is quite steep in places both going up and down hill. Get some practice in! Once you’re at the top of the hill you’ll realise it’s all worth it when you see the amazing views.

CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

Varied holiday spoiled somewhat by the untypical weather.

Most Inspirational Moment

A lot of the rides on the tour were fairly inspirational as regards scenery, although the rain did put a dampener on things.  Food was a mixed bag and I did have a bout of gastro-enteritis on the trip.  There was a lot of bus travel partly due to the fact that in October we were on the off season ferry schedules.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader arranged the rides well adapting them to the unseasonal weather.

Advice for Potential Travellers

One might be well advised to avoid October plumping for May instead to avoid adverse weather and restricted ferry services.

CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

I had a fabulous trip and met some great travelling buddies. The Croatian coastline is stunning and cycling is an amazing way to experience it.

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling the quiet coastal roads with spectacular views.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ana was really great. She was experienced in organizing our tour, arranging meals together and is sociable and fun. She was also a good bike mechanic when necessary and able to adjust our itinerary to accommodate some rainy weather.

Advice for Potential Travellers

October may not be the best month to go. We had quite a lot of rain.

CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

I recommend this trip but suggest doing it outside the rainy season.  The rainy season during our week was Sunday (light drizzle, just to help us acclimatise), Monday (heavy showers followed by heavy rain), Tuesday (morning downpour, afternoon showers), and Wednesday (heavy rain in between periods of torrential rain, although it did clear late in the afternoon)!  Thursday and Friday were mostly dry.  But the islands did look very beautiful between the clouds, we had a fun group of people and our guide did an excellent job of modifying the cycling and finding other activities to suit the weather.

Most Inspirational Moment

Hiding in a church porch whilst the rain was completely bucketing down!  The idea that we had tried to cycle and been caught out in those conditions was just so funny we all had to laugh.  So we were laughing even before the wine-tasting....

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ana was excellent - made a real effort to modify the cycle plans to suit the occasional gaps between the heavy rain, and to find alternative activities, including cave visits and wine-tastings, due to the shorter cycling programme.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I'm sure you'll have a great time with better weather!  There are some long hills on the trip, so if you aren't a regular cyclist, do try to do a bit of training before you go.

CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

Had a fantastic time on this trip: the group, the scenery and the leader could not be faulted. If you want an introduction to Croatia or simply see it at its best, then this trip is for you.

Most Inspirational Moment

Great memories:-Completing the climbs on day 1 and 2.-Cycling as close as it gets along the coast line on several occassions.-An amazing Croatian lunch at a family run restaurant in what to me seemed the middle of nowhere. -Dubrovnik early in the morning! I will certainly come back here. -Last but not least: making new friends to go on more Exocus holidays with.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Group leader Vlad was great, he doesn't usually does this particular trip, but much more advanced ones. By the end of the week we were all convinced he was super-human. With the patience of angels he made sure the whole group managed most of the rides. He is passionate about his country and encouraged us all to make the most of all opportunties to explore.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you understand the skill level you need to do this ride, several in the group hadn't and it made the rides a lot harder for them and slower for the overall group. Because we all got on so well, it wasn't an issue in the group I was in, but could have been in a group who were after speed. Know your gears and be aware that you will be cycling 55K, with 2 x 1000m climbs on 2 days and around 35K the other days.

CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

This holiday was excellent and extremely well organised.  Some of the hills were tough but very enjoyable – especially the downhill ones!  The guide was always on hand and very helpful in finding great places to eat. Altogether a fantastic holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

The whole Dalmation coast itself and especially Dubrovnik.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take note when the guide says there's hills involved!

CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

This was my first cycling trip with Exodus and I am currently trying to work out where the next one will be! The Dalmatian coast is absolutely beautiful, the cycling was enough to be a challenge without being too daunting and the group were inspirational.

Most Inspirational Moment

The team spirit which helped me finish the 10.5km climb on the first day! The group were a continued source of inspiration and humour.Loading our bikes onto the roof of the ferry to Mjet and swimming in the crystal clear waters was a wonderfully relaxing and fun day.The outstanding views on the long descents!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Bojan was very organised and it was great to be able to concentrate on the cycling knowing that everything else was sorted out. He soon tuned into the groups rather wick sense of humour! He also took us to some great restaurants and a great cocktail bar with fantastic views (don't wear a skirt for the first night in Korcula!).  The traditional lunch and the traditional dinner were probably my favourite meals....and Boris was our trusty van driver!

Advice for Potential Travellers

As this was my first cycling trip I was worried whether I was as fit enough and tried to follow (most of) the fitness plan on the website. I am glad that I did otherwise I don't think that I would have made it up the 10.5km climb on the first day. The second day we did the 55km practically in one go, only stopping for a couple of quick drink stops, so that we could catch the 1pm ferry. The first two days were more challenging than I had expected but the rest of the week was much easier going. There was a steep descent on fairly narrow lanes and also a descent with tight bends with no barriers in places where there were some drops. For these reasons I think you need to be a fairly confident rider to really enjoy this trip. One point to note is that although there is van cover, it tends to be on an all or nothing basis for each leg and the van does not follow on behind in case you change your mind.

CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

A great all-rounder – exceeded expectations, amongst my "best holidays ever". Great scenery, sunny all week and perfect temperature, cycling challenging enough but leaving enough time and energy to enjoy the local sights, restaurants and bars.

Most Inspirational Moment

Not sure about inspirational, but memorable highlights included: (1) Second half of Day 3 ride along Hvar towards Sucaraj - cruising along the narrow part of the island with amazing sea views to left and right. I had got in my stride and thought: this is cycling at its best. (2) Lunch at Mate restaurant on Day 5, Korcula - simple but traditional fayre, a great stop over on a relaxing day of cycling. (3) Traditional dinner on Day 5 at family establishment just outside Korcula - amazing slow cooked lamb and simple but delicious salads, great setting.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Good overall - responsible, responsive and took good care of us in general. However, he could have been more communicative: I (and I think some other fellow travellers) would have preferred if he had provided more detailed information in the daily briefings.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for some reasonably long climbs - eg, 11k and 9k climbs on Days 2 and 3. Whether or not they are "challenging" depends of course on what cycling you are used to. But I think if you do not have any experience of cycling in hilly areas, then some of the hills would be quite challenging. Also beware that whilst you can decide at the bottom of the big climbs to go in the van instead, there was no option of quitting half way (no place for van to stop).

CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

The scenery was breathtaking. Every corner revealed a different view. At times, the coastline would not of been out of place in the carribean.

Most Inspirational Moment

The evening tour of Dubrovnik.....perhaps the walk around the city walls.Mljet National Park is pretty special too!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very professional, yet relaxed as well.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you can afford it, book on the tour with the premium accomadation.

CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

Gorgeous scenery of blue sea, red terracotta roofs and green vegetation and the smells of the herbs wafting through the air as you ride along on your trusty bike.

Most Inspirational Moment

The last bike ride on small roads to Zuljiana - perfect. The road clung to the side of the land with the sea below. No traffic and just a few coves and small villages. Then oysters in Ston - a peach of a place. The set lunch on the way from Vela Luka on day 3. Perfect for a light lunch during a bike ride. The trip to Mljet though we were left short of time waiting for lunch at a restaurant (majority didn't want to eat on boat)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent: Confident, fit, smart with very good English, upbeat, sensitive to individual needs and fair. Very easy company. Cannot think of any minus points!

Advice for Potential Travellers

This trip probably surprised a lot of us in being fairly tough - it was no ride in the park! When you look at pictures of those Dalmatian islands you probably think they are mostly flat but they are not! There were some very fit people on the group as well who took off like the Tour de France and kept us going full pelt. Very good though - far better than being in a group predominantly laid back and dawdling along.
