Where to Travel in September

Where to Travel in September

For those who don’t like crowds, Europe is the best place to travel in September when it’s still warm but much quieter. Elsewhere, Canada is enticing, and things are warming up in South Africa

FRANCE

It’s grape harvesting season

As the summer temperatures subside in France, the winemakers’ thoughts turn to harvest season, where the juicy grapes are plucked from their vines. It’s a pleasant time of year for a walking or cycling holiday, whether you’re getting to know the Loire Valley by foot on our Loire Valley: Walks, Wine & Chateaux or exploring the region on two wheels on our Cycle the Loire Valley adventure. View all France trips here

INDONESIA

Enjoy sunshine and wildlife sightings

In September, Indonesia is transitioning from the dry to wet season, but most regions will still benefit from relatively dry, sunny weather. There are also fewer crowds than in the summer, so you can ride past villages, temples and glistening rice paddies largely undisturbed on our Cycling Indonesia’s Islands trip. Orangutans are more active this month, while the cold-blooded Komodo dragons also enjoy lounging in the sun, making this a good time to book our Primates and Dragons of Indonesia adventure. View all Indonesia trips here

SOUTH AFRICA

An optimum time for wildlife and wildflowers

While many choose to visit Cape Town and the surrounding region when it’s hottest and driest between November and February, travelling in September is ideal. The temperatures are beginning to climb and vegetation thins out making animals easier to spot around watering holes on our South Africa Safari: Kruger & Coast trip. This month is also great for viewing southern right whales off the coast on our Cycling the Cape & Winelands adventure. View all South Africa trips here

GREECE

Extend your summer in the Greek sunshine

The weather in Greece in September is fantastic, and one of the best places to travel in September. The intensity of July and August’s sun has faded, but it’s still comfortably warm – and the sea temperature remains mild if you’re understandably drawn to the sparkling sea. It’s typically quieter as children have returned to school, leaving famous sights on our Highlights of Ancient Greece less crowded and the routes we use on our Cycling in Greece trip far more pleasant than when the temperatures are at their peak.  View all Greece trips here

CANADA

Watch the salmon run

Timing your trip at the beginning of Autumn means your visit will coincide with the start of the salmon run, so if you head to British Columbia, you might be lucky enough to spot bears hunting for migrating fish. Vancouver Island is a great place to witness this spectacle. It’s also the prime whale-watching season when you can scan the water for orca, humpback, and grey whales. Experience these incredible wildlife sights for yourself on our Whales & Bears of British Columbia trip.  View all Canada trips here
