Community Kickstart Projects in Europe

Community Kickstart Projects in Europe

Our Community Kickstart grants enable our leaders and operators to apply for funding to kickstart grassroots initiatives that directly support nature and local communities to thrive.  These grants could be for small projects that uplift women, encourage entrepreneurship, engage young people in conservation or regeneration of our natural world or provide help in times of need.

In Europe, we have been able to work with local partners to educate communities on regeneration and reforestation, continuing to prioritise the empowerment of local communities to helping nature to thrive in tourism destinations. For more details on the projects throughout Europe that we’ve been able to support, read below.

An Educational Rewilding Seminar, The Apennines

Exodus have partnered with Rewilding Apennines to rewild habitats in this region and connect the surrounding National Parks to allow safe passage of wildlife, including the endangered Marsican brown bears.

We’re continuing in our commitment to rewild 100 square metres per passenger. In November 2023, The Exodus Adventure Travels Foundation were pleased to fund 6 students and 2 guest speakers to attend a rewilding seminar in Italy, delivered by Rewilding Apennines. The event took place in a ‘Bear Smart Community’, Gioia dei Marsi, over three days to discuss important topics such as coexistence between communities and their wildlife. It was a great success and we’re looking forward to hearing how the students will be putting their newfound knowledge into practice.

Reforestation after fire storms, Pinhal de Leiria

In 2017, a fire storm caused widespread forest fires through Portugal. These devastating fires destroyed over 80% of the Pinhal de Leiria forest, an 800-year old pine forest that many recognise as a local landmark. Due to the amount of damage from the fires, sadly only 1 out of every 10 trees planted is able to grow in the current conditions. Together with our local operator we aim to restore and reforest 11 hectares of forest in 2024.
