Selecting the cover image for a new brochure can be tricky – capturing the essence of our incredible cycling trips is no mean feat. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but soaring down open roads surrounded by some of the greatest landscapes in the world is such a unique experience that it takes something special to grace the cover of our brochure! This year our incredible image was taken by one of our fantastic cycling Product Managers, Megan Devenish.

We asked Megan for the secret behind bagging such a wonderful photograph and to tell us more about the trip on which it was taken. Where was the image taken (which country and which trip)? “It was taken in Myanmar (Burma) on our Burma by Bike trip.”

Which day of the trip did you take the cover image on and can you describe what you did that day? “It was taken on Day 11 of the trip. This day is spent exploring the ancient Bagan temple complex by bike.”

How did you get the cover shot? “Well…. I asked the entire group to get up at the crack of dawn so that we would be guaranteed good light for photography – past 8am the sun becomes too bright to take a good shot. I also asked them all to wear their most colourful cycling jerseys. Once we got to the temples I asked the leaders to take us on some back roads where large temples featured and I then cycled ahead continually looking behind me until I found a good spot. The group were all keen to make it onto the cover so they didn’t mind me directing them into different groups and asking them to cycle the same spot a few times so I could get some shots!”

What was the highlight of your trip? “Exploring all of the spots between the main tourist sites on two wheels – tourism is fairly heavily concentrated in a few areas in Myanmar but joining these up by cycling meant that we had time to see the ‘real’ Myanmar, interact with various locals along the way and gain a real insight into a fascinating country.” Like what you see?
