The hotly anticipated Family Adventures brochure is here, and the eagle-eyed may have spotted a familiar, friendly face on the back cover … Exodus’ very own Managing Director, travel expert and father of three: Pete Burrell.
The Burrell Family Adventure
“I have a love of the world’s wild places and have long wanted to visit the wide-open spaces of Namibia. I must admit though that taking the whole family there had always felt like a bit of a gamble…
A land of few towns with their associated shops, cinemas and restaurants, very few people, even fewer roads and (shhh!!) sparse internet access, was not an automatic fit for my city-dwelling teenagers.
However, simplifying life down to the practicalities of camping, cooking spicy ‘boerewors’ sausage and (enormous) steaks on a traditional “braai” BBQ, walking, exploring, talking, reading and playing cards became so natural to all.
Of course, for kids there have to be some bragging rights, so try exploring the highest dunes in the world, meeting and understanding how the local people lived, watching rhinos and elephants drinking at a waterhole, discovering ancient rock carvings of penguins in the middle of a desert, and spotting shipwrecks on the spooky “skeleton coast”.
So many great experiences, but this was a special moment. For the kids (including me!) a quad bike safari across endless plains full of Oryx as the sun set on the red rock mountains was an experience that will remain ingrained in our collective family memory for a lifetime.”
