On our Walking the Great Wall adventure, the lesser-trodden section in Huanghuacheng reveals the scale of this remarkable piece of engineering, without being surrounded by crowds. The trek passes contrasting sections of the wall, with both dilapidated and rebuilt stretches and is situated in an incredibly picturesque location by a lake. The name Huanghuacheng translates as Yellow Flower City, as during summer the surrounding mountains are swathed in yellow as wildflowers bloom.
