THE AMALFI COAST

A great walking holiday if you are fit and can cope with lots of steps – up and down.  Spectacular landscape with the houses built on/into the cliff faces.  Winding twisty roads, and you certainly get to know every twist and turn of the road from Amalfi to Bomerano!

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking round the crater summit of Vesuvius and looking down over the thousands of houses that would be engulfed if Vesuvius erupts again.  With only three days' notice and no main route out, the possibility of a catastrophe is very real.  However, trying to race those elderly people up to the summit didn't come easy, but going down was much easier.  If you are lucky enough to have the same guide as we did, you get the privilidge to walk around the whole of the crater. The hospitality of the family run hotel and the friendliness of the group made the holiday for me.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Alfred led us on some mighty walks!  Punctuality and his friendliess were his forte and he certainly had our safety at the forefront when we were confronted by a forest fire.  Although this meant turning back and retracing our steps, the staff of the hotel came out in the middle of the day to drive us by road nearer to our destination thus avoiding the fires.  We nicknamed one of them Emerson (after the racing driver) because he knew how to take every bend in that well run route!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you are fit and can cope with lots of steps.  I know the trip is graded leisurely/moderate - it certainly falls into the moderate category taken at a leisurely pace.  I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with knee, hip or foot problems.  That put aside, the views are spectacular  and so is the food.  Although the hotel does not have a pool, which is a shame, take a swim suit as you do get the opportunity to swim in the sea - which you have to negotiate the hot pebbles to get to!

THE AMALFI COAST

This trip is described as a walking tour, which is not. It is a hiking trip.  Also, it is not a leisurely / moderate hiking trip, but rather a quite intense hiking trip. In order to cope, one needs to be fit and have hiking experience. And walking poles are indeed necessary and not optional, as stated in the description.  So, if you don´t like hiking, think twice before booking this trip. Having said the above, this was a very well organized trip, the hotel was very good with excellent food and our guide Albert was very helpful and sociable. The Amalfi Coast is quite beautiful, even though, if one follows the trip program and does all the hiking, there isn't enough time to enjoy the coast and the towns.

Most Inspirational Moment

The visit to Vesuvius, Pompei and Ercolano.

Reply from Exodus

We are sorry that Stella found the walking to be tougher than expected. We tend to call any trip that is a series of daywalks a ‘walking holiday’, and point to point routes we call treks. As an alternative, AVG – Amalfi Coast & Bay of Naples is classed as a ‘Discover’ trip and focuses more on the cultural and natural highlights of the area, experienced at a leisurely pace. We work hard to ensure the Trip Notes accurately reflect the content of the trip and we are always available to answer any queries our customers may have.

THE AMALFI COAST

A fabulous holiday and very well organised.  The hotel was lovely, very clean and the food exceptional.  The walking was spectacular with stunning views.

Most Inspirational Moment

I loved all of the walking, expecially the trip to Mount Vesuvius.  Took the additional trip to walk the rim which was unbelievable.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader, Albert, was very knowledgable and everything ran smoothly.  He briefed us each evening with the agenda, pick up times etc for the next day.  He had a great sense of humour and made the walks very enjoyable.  He knew some great places to eat and drink in Amalfi also.

Advice for Potential Travellers

For this particular holiday it is important to have a good pair of walking shoes.  Also a micro towel would be good to take as we end a few of the walks on the beach.  Saves taking a bulky beach towel with you on the walks.  Most of the walks are around 9k, so not too far but there is quite a lot of climbing up and walking down, so if you have troublesome knees some walking poles would be beneficial!

THE AMALFI COAST

A great walking holiday in a fantastic part of the work with great food!

Most Inspirational Moment

Most inspirational aspect of the holiay was just how much walking we did during the week.  Looking back it feels like I've been away for much longer.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very experienced, patient.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There is alot of stairs!!!

THE AMALFI COAST

The scenery was wonderful (although not a patch on the Pembrokeshire coastline). The walking was challenging and ultimately offered spectacular views, however in the August heat was not always enjoyable. The days where we were not walking were interesting.

Most Inspirational Moment

On the boat trip on the last day, you get to see from a distance exactly how far you have walked and climbed over the week, that was a satisfying moment. The village where the hotel is based was a highlight of the trip. There aren't really tourists there, just a working village where every garden is fully utilised for growing vegetables and fruit or housing animals. It is wonderful place to spend an afternoon wandering around. You'll also find possibly the best espresso's in Italy there too.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent. Very thorough and attentive.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The walking on this holiday is not moderate. I would recommend some incline training before hand for anyone who does not hike regularly.I went in August, it was incredibly hot. The walking is challenging enough without having to climb in 32 degree heat. Many in the group became hot and sweaty very quickly. This was really uncomfortable at times. I would advise going at a different time.Bug spray is essential for the evenings. The roads to the village and Amalfi are long and windy. If you are someone who suffers from motion sickness, ensure that you take appropriate pills with you.

THE AMALFI COAST

Everything about the trip was excellent – the scenery, the walks, the knowledge of the Exodus guide, the food, the hotel, the scenery.

Most Inspirational Moment

Pompeii and Vesuvius!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Enthusiastic, great local knowlege, friendly, worked hard to make sure everyone got the most out of the trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers

A good pair of walking shoes needed and be prepared for sore calves.

THE AMALFI COAST

This was our first trekking holiday and our first trip with Exodus – both were great.  The Hotel Due Torri was a perfect base for some wonderful walks.  It was confortable with lovely food and very friendly and helpful staff.  We felt like we were tourists sharing in a part of ‘real Italy’, rather than holiday Italy.  The guide was superb with loads of local knowledge and heaps of infectious enthusiasim.  The walks were tough in places (for leisurely/moderate grading) especially in the August heat but they were well worth the effort for some spectacular views.  In addition, you get to visit the amazing ruins of Pompeii and peer into the (active) Vesuvius volcano.  I would thoroughly recommend this trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

Climbing to the top of the mountain and looking down above the clouds to the sea below.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fabulous - enthusiastic, knowledgeable, fun, and very professional.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for the heat if you go in August!

THE AMALFI COAST

This was a great walking holiday in a very scenic part of the world!  The hotel was superb providing friendly service and excellent food!  The length and challenge of the walks was just right for me and there was always time to relax at the end before heading back to the hotel.  A great group also!

Most Inspirational Moment

There were many moments just to relax and enjoy the wonderful scenery!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Albert was a great leader - always making sure everyone was relaxed and having a great time!  He kept the pace of the walks suitable for everyone and dealt with any queries that we had!

Advice for Potential Travellers

I didn't take walking poles as had never used them before but found a spare one in the hotel which I tried.  It was really useful and I'd probably use one again!  Just make sure you buy a decent make as they seem prone to breaking quite easily!  On my free day I went to visit Ravello which was well worth it!

THE AMALFI COAST

This was our first trekking holiday and what a great way to start! We enjoyed every aspect from the friendly hotel and staff, inspirational leader, scenery and wonderful food and wine.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking around the rim of Versuvius, walking in a nature reserve with the sun shining on a wall of mosses and cascading water and visiting the gardens of Villa Rufolo in Ravello with Dire Straits music as a background!(They were testing the sound equipment for a concert that evening)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Albert made our holiday! He was enthusiastic and clearly enjoyed his job.He had excellent people skills and good local knowledge. He seemed to know everyone and everything!

Advice for Potential Travellers

We found good walking boots and walking poles essential.Remember that the weather in July can be rather hot!

THE AMALFI COAST

This was a stunning walking holiday! The walks were fairly challenging (we didn’t find any of them leisurely to be honest) but totally doable, with the most amazing views, and we all loved it. The combination of walking, sightseeing at Pompei and the option of a beach here or there are just perfect. Highly recommended!

Most Inspirational Moment

* Sitting at the top of the mountain on our first day, with THE most amazing view of the whole of the Sorrento peninsula, enjoying our lunch and feeling proud of ourselves for making it to the top.* Getting to the beach at Amalfi at the end of day 2 and 4, after LOTS of steps and lots of tantalising views of what lay ahead (a refreshing dip in the sea!).* Going to Pompei and seeing the amazing ruins. Walking around this ancient town and being able to imagine what life was like in those days. * The Walk of the Gods was truly the most awsome walk I've ever done. Stunning scenery once again and just all around fabulous.* Getting to make a Neapolitan pizza and seeing Giovanni cook up a delicious 3-course dinner for us.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Suzy was a great group leader. Not only did she makes us all feel safe (very important in these mountains), she also knew lots of interesting things and was really flexible to what we needed and wanted (we seemed to have a penchant for the beach, as opposed to the cathedrals, and she made it happen oh so easily!). She was also an excellent table-football player and all-round good sport.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take your walking poles, proper hiking/mountain boots and light and loose clothing when you go in the summer (we had fantastic weather in June 2011 and it did get very hot). Some people brought water pouches and found those very useful (you do need a lot of water on these walks!).
