Viagrande Taormina
Fly to Catania and transfer to Viagrande
Arrive at Catania airport and transfer to Viagrande, a little town just 19mi (30km) north of Catania and a one-hour drive from Taormina. From its lofty position above the sea, it offers stunning views of Mount Etna. The current old town centre was founded in 1408 but Viagrande’s first settlement was founded under the Greek rule. The ancient Roman road that led to Messina gives the name to the village (Viagrande means big road).
Depending on the arrival time of the group, we have a welcome briefing at the hotel either this evening or tomorrow morning; a great chance to meet your tour leader and the rest of the group.

Start in Viagrande
Welcome to Viagrande, a traditional Catanian village with a privileged view of Mount Etna. From its lofty position above the sea, it offers views of Mount Etna. Excursion on Mount Etna; afternoon wine tasting
After breakfast we enjoy a spectacular guided walk on Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe. We hike past several old lava flows to be rewarded with a dramatic panorama of the volcanic landscape and old craters (one to two hours’ walking, 3.1mi/5km). You are strongly advised to take a waterproof/windproof jacket, a warm top and to wear long trousers (pants). In the afternoon, we enjoy a wine-and-cheese tasting in one of the most-celebrated cellars in the area.

Drive to Syracuse to visit its archeological site; on to the Unesco-badged baroque town of Noto
This morning we drive to Syracuse (approximately 1hr 15min drive), the most powerful city-state in the ancient Greek world and briefly the capital of the Byzantine empire. Here we visit the superb Neapolis Archeological Park, home to a spectacular Greek theatre and well-preserved Roman amphitheatre, accompanied by a local guide. In the afternoon we drive to our next destination, the Unesco World Heritage site of Noto (approximately 45 mins), a beautiful town built in the Sicilian baroque style using honey-coloured stone.

Visit the hilltop town of Ragusa Ibla; transfer to Agrigento's Valley of the Temples
After breakfast we drive to the hilltop town of Ragusa Ibla (approximately 90 minutes), a maze of winding streets with remarkable baroque churches, and continue on to Agrigento (2hr 30min). Here we enjoy a guided visit of the Valley of the Temples: the Temple of Juno; the Temple of Concorde, one of the most well-preserved doric temples in the ancient Greek world; the Temple of Hercules; and the Temple of Castor and Pollux.

Visit ruins of Selinunte, overlooking the Mediterranean; drive to the hilltop village of Erice
Our day starts with a transfer to Selinunte (90 minutes) to explore one of the most important archeological sites in the Mediterranean, set high overlooking the sea. We then move on to the mountaintop village of Erice (90 minutes), and stop en route for a view of the Mozia salt flats, which are dotted with characteristic windmills (time permitting). Once in Erice, we have time for a stroll through its narrow streets and will try the best almond biscuits on the island. We stay overnight in the town of Buseto Palizzolo or Trapani.

Walk in the Zingaro Nature Reserve; afternoon transfer to Palermo
This morning head to the coast to explore the idyllic Mediterranean landscape on foot. Stretching along the coast for 4.3mi (7km) between the lovely village of Scopello in the east to San Vito Lo Capo in the west, the Zingaro Nature Reserve has walking trails with views out to the cliffs and the glistening sea, hidden coves and pristine beaches. We take a leisurely walk for up to three hours (including stops) along beautiful coastal trails, with the opportunity of a quick swim before returning to the bus. In the afternoon we make our way to Palermo (approximately 1hr 30min) where we can enjoy time at leisure to discover the vibrant historic centre and lively streets filled with restaurants and bars.

Morning visit to Monreale Cathedral; guided tour of Palermo and free time
After a short transfer to Monreale (approximately one hour), we visit its extraordinary cathedral, considered the greatest example of Norman architecture in the world. We then head to Palermo (approximately one hour) where our local guide will show us the most important sites in this beautiful city, including Quattro Canti, Pretoria Square, the cathedral and Marina Square. In the afternoon, we have free time in Palermo to enjoy this eclectic city at our own pace.

Drive to the fishing village of Cefalu to visit its Norman cathedral; on to charming Taormina; free time to explore
This morning we drive to the fishing village of Cefalu (approximately 1hr 15min), where we visit the impressive cathedral, home to elaborate Byzantine mosaics, and the lovely historic centre with its winding medieval streets. Our tour ends in one of the most renowned treasures of Sicily: the charming town of Taormina (approximately 2hr 40min drive). We have time to visit its Greek theatre and enjoy the spectacular views of Mount Etna and the sea.

Transfer to Catania airport; fly to London.
Transfer to Catania airport; fly to London. If the group flight is scheduled to leave late in the afternoon or evening, we can enjoy some extra free time in Taormina before our airport transfer departs (usually approx. 3 hrs before our flight).
End in Taormina
Enjoy your final breakfast of this Sicilian adventure, a perfect opportunity to reflect on the many wonders of this Italian island. Once you’re full, it’s time to start your return journey home.
Three- and four-star hotels
On this cultural trip in Sicily, we use a varied selection of three- and four-star hotels. The places we stay are often near historic centres, allowing us to easily explore the towns in the evenings or during our free time.
Below are the accommodations we typically use:
Viagrande: Grand Hotel Villa Itria (nights 1-2)
With an outdoor pool, restaurant serving Mediterranean dishes made with local ingredients, and a cocktail bar-lounge, Villa Itria is an excellent spot to ease ourselves into the trip. There’s also a wellness centre for an additional cost.
Noto: Hotel Flora (night 3)
Our time in Noto is spent at Hotel Flora, which is ideally located in the historic centre of town. Noto Cathedral and the Piazza del Duomo are just a 10-minute walk away, while the hotel terrace offers views and a spot for a sundowner.
Agrigento: Hotel Della Valle (night 4)
Now well into the trip, Hotel Della Valle is a great place to relax as a group. When it’s hot, head to the swimming pool area, where you’ll find loungers, parasols and tables, plus a Mediterranean garden with palms and pines. Alternatively, you may prefer to find a shady spot for a drink.
Buseto Palizzolo or Trapani: Baglio Fontana or B&B Trapani Crystal (night 5)
In Buseto Palizzolo, we stay at either at Baglio Fontana (above) or in Trapani at B&B Trapani Crystal, depending on availability. The former is a historic agriturismo (converted farmhouse) with a working farm producing wines and olive oil, plus there’s an outdoor pool. The latter is a contemporary retreat with an excellent location, just a short walk from the ancient wonders of the historic centre of Trapani.
Palermo: Hotel Posta or Hotel B&B Quattro Canti (nights 6-7)
In Palermo, the group stays at either Hotel Posta (above) or Hotel B&B Quattro Canti. Hotel Posta has been run by the same family since 1921 and has an excellent location in the historic centre, just a five-minute walk from Teatro Massimo, plus there’s a sun terrace and bar. Our alternative stay, Quattro Canti, is within walking distance of the Quattro Canti piazza, where the four ancient quarters of the city meet, plus there’s a rooftop terrace with views over Palermo.
Taormina: Hotel Villa Esperia (night 8)
Our final night is spent at Villa Esperia. Get the group together by the outdoor pool to toast the adventure and admire the sea views. Alternatively, a cable car to Taormina town centre is just 330ft (100m) from the front door. The hotel also has one restaurant: Bacio di Dama, which serves Sicilian dishes.

Outstanding trip!
This trip was a thoroughly enjoyable experience in all respects. It has a well thought-out and interesting itinerary, good hotels and seamless travel arrangements. The tour gives sufficient time to explore many of Sicily’s architectural and cultural wonders, as well as spending several hours on Mt Etna and walking in the Zingaro Nature Reserve. Our guide Francesco was outstanding – very friendly, informative and helpful. At some of the sites we had local guides who were also very good. Our enjoyment of the trip was greatly enhanced by our fellow travellers who gelled extremely well as a group and were excellent company throughout the trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers
Take good walking shoes, especially for the Zingaro coastal walk, which was quite rocky and steep in places. As the beaches are stony there, I would recommend taking along a pair of flip-flops or jelly shoes if you’re planning on swimming.

Thanks to our very well organised leader Laura, we managed a complete tour of the island in a week. Greek, Roman and Norman sites told the rich history of Sicily. The trip to Mont Etna and the walk in the national park covered the beauty of the island. Our group was made up of lovely people which added to the fun

The Greek and Roman temples and the magnificent cathedral in Montreale with Fabio our great guide were the highlights for me but Palermo was very interesting also

Treasures upon treasures
What a wonderful week offering a great overview of Sicily, its culture, history and people, not to mention food and pastries! We packed so much into the week, always something new and unexpected, each day having its particular wow factor.

Trekking the Zingaro coastal path. Breathtaking views of the mountains and the deep, deep blue sea. Indescribably beautiful, although the rocky path proved a little challenging for some.

Alessio could have been added to the list of the treasures we encountered. Always helpful, always warm and friendly, always professional, humorous and knowledgeable. Couldn't wish for anything more.
Advice for Potential Travellers
April was the perfect time to visit, pleasantly warm, but not too hot although sun protection is needed. Some of the high places (e.g. Etna, Erice) can be chilly and windy, so warm layers, scarves and hats are recommended.
Best Exodus Tour Yet!
This is a 5-star tour! I selected the Treasures of Sicily trip because I want to visit different regions of Italy. I had no idea how much I would learn about the Sicily invaders (our guide called them “visitors”) or their contributions to the culture. In seven days, our group traveled around the entire border of Sicily. We saw a minimum of two attractions per day, including Mt. Etna volcano, Ancient Greek and Roman ruins, beautiful small towns, National Park, and the bustling capital. You spend a lot of time on the bus (typically 2 to 3 hours a day) in transit but this enables you to see so much in one week. I wouldn’t want to give up even one attraction. Our guide Tiziano was superb. This young man knows so much about the history and culture. He made every day so much fun!

I was most swept away by the Ancient Greek temples as well as the Greek Amphitheatre in Sicily. They were in wonderful condition despite their antiquity and I marveled at how the Greeks built such edifices.

Words cannot adequately describe our group leader Tiziano—smart, funny, engaging, emphatic, energetic, and caring. He was the cheerleader from daybreak to sunset on our journey around Sicily. He was always making us laugh. I would love to take smother tour with Tiz in the future! I wish I booked the 14-day Grand Tour to spend more time with Tiz.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Don’t pack a big suitcase. You have to drag it a big distance in old town Palermo. Don’t pack a lot of clothes to go out a night. It is casual in Sicily. You want 1 or 2 nice outfits. Pack warm clothes for hiking Mt. Etna. It gets cold on the mountain. Leave some space in your suitcase to bring home treasures, such as the superb Silican wines. Wear good walking shoes. Bring hiking boots for the volcano hike.

Amazing Sicily!
A fast paced, very full itinerary, covering some truly amazing places. Great group, made up of caring, fun, interesting and interested folks from a whole range of backgrounds. Highlights were the Etna Volcano visit by cablecar and Greek Temples at Selinunte. The tour does not include the mosaics of Villa Romano or the Aeolian Islands, both of which I still want to see….so look out Sicily, I’ll be returning!

Hard to name just one...Seeing the remnants of the recent eruption on Etna....smoke rising from the summit. Or sitting on the steps of a church in centre of Syracuse eating the best Arancini with a cold local beer. The beautiful wildflowers at Selinunte Temples. Thr fun the group had at Tiziano's birthday celebration at the Agriturismo rural hotel. The awesome gold interior of Monreale Cathedral. Walking into the 'Church of the Holy Water' in Palermo and the organist belting out Bohemian Rhapsody. Or perhaps swimming in the stunning turquoise sea on the return from the Zingaro Nature Reserve walk.

Tiziano was fabulous. Very well organised, and really good at getting us to coordinate, arriving and leaving on time being important on such a packed tour. His knowledge of the sights, culture and (obsession!) with the food of his country were inspirational! He had a very caring nature and went out of his way to ensure we were all well informed, looked after and having fun at every step of the way!

Try and pack lighter as you are moving hotels most nights and sometimes the bus isn't able to park outside the hotel

Tiziano was a brilliant host to Sicily, he was passionate, energetic and organised - giving us restaurant recommendations and local foods to try in each area we stopped at. In addition, he was super knowledgeable about the history of the island and also arranged for additional stop offs during the trip so we could see more places of interest. I joined this fully booked trip as a Solo.What a fantastic experience! Full of really interesting places & sights, with a very well thought out programme, not too fast yet we got to see SO much! I can’t choose a favourite experience or sight..they were all so good. Our group gelled extremely well & that really added to the enjoyment. Hotels very comfortable too. I have to give a huge shout out to Guide Alessandro who is without doubt the best Guide I’ve ever come across on my trips. Our driver Graziano & the local Guides were excellent too. If you haven’t yet been to Sicily & you enjoy culture then you cant miss this trip, I’m thinking of repeating,😊
