Amman Dead Sea
Depart London for Amman; transfer to hotel
The group flight from London usually arrives in Amman late tonight or very early in the morning tomorrow. We catch our transfer to the hotel and head straight to bed.

Start Amman
Welcome to Amman, the capital of Jordan, where our adventure begins. There are free transfers to the hotel from Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) for all customers today. Please note, transfers should be booked with your sales representative at least two weeks before the tour starts.

Visit the Roman ruins at Jerash then Amman city tour
We drive north to Jerash this morning, the largest Roman ruins in Jordan. Buried for centuries under blown sand, the ancient architecture here is remarkably well preserved and an exploration of the dramatic oval forum, colonnaded main streets, two theatres and impressive Temple of Zeus provides a fascinating insight into life in the ancient world.
After a good look around, we head back to Amman for a city tour, which takes in the hilltop ruins of the Citadel, a site occupied by various civilisations from the Bronze Age, plus the 6,000-seat Roman amphitheatre and the old city.

Drive down King's Highway to Petra via Mount Nebo, Madaba and Kerak
Today is a long driving day as we head down the King’s Highway, which takes us up and down huge wadis (valleys). However, we have several stops of interest en route including Madaba, where we visit St George’s Church to admire its mosaic floor, considered the oldest map of Palestine in existence.
We then make the short drive to Mount Nebo, where, from this 2,295ft (700m) high viewpoint overlooking the Dead Sea to Palestine and Israel beyond, Moses is said to have first seen the Promised Land. It’s then to the magnificent fortified town of Kerak, a Crusader stronghold dominated by a medieval castle.
Further south, we reach Petra, the premier historic site in Jordan and one of the most outstanding ancient cities in the world.

Two days exploring Petra, including optional hikes
Enjoy two days exploring Petra, an ancient Nabatean city carved spectacularly into sandstone cliffs. Building started here in the third century BCE, but the Red Rose City was hidden for centuries until Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt rediscovered it in 1812.
To enter, we walk down a narrow chasm known as the Siq. Dramatically unveiled at the end is El Khazneh (the Treasury), the first breathtaking sight of a remarkable day. Continuing to the city centre, we pass the houses and tombs of the rich citizens and the remarkable scale of the site begins to unveil itself. You can also take the optional walk up the 800 or so steps to El Deir (the Monastery), with its superb facade topped by a huge urn.
On the second day, your guide takes you into the site for either a hike up to the High Place of Sacrifice or for free time to explore the city further. Only a few people attempt to visit the High Place as it can be quite arduous and is not recommended for those who are unsure of their fitness or are uncomfortable with heights. However, those who do make it to the top are rewarded with wonderful views over parts of the site visited on the previous day.

Petra to Wadi Rum
This morning, we have the option to take a guided tour through Little Petra (extra cost, payable locally) or you can relax at our hotel before we join the modern Desert Highway and head south to Wadi Rum. The purpose of Little Petra is not clear; however, archaeologists believe it was probably a suburb of Petra where visiting traders on the Silk Road may have stayed.
It’s then to the UNESCO-listed Wadi Rum, where dramatic sandstone mountains rise from the sandy desert floor. It was here that Lawrence of Arabia and Prince Faisal assembled the Arab tribes for the attack on Aqaba in the First World War and where sections of the 1962 epic film were shot.
After we’ve checked into our private Exodus camp, our Bedouin hosts take us for an approximately two-hour 4×4 ride to explore the protected area. We visit the highlights, have time to sample Bedouin tea, and then watch the sunset from the vantage point of a rock formation. We then return to our camp, where we enjoy Bedouin hospitality with a traditional zarb dinner, which is cooked underground. After, we learn about Bedouin culture through interacting with the family who run the camp.

Morning in Wadi Rum; drive to Aqaba; relax by the Red Sea
We wake in dramatic desert scenery and then head to Aqaba, a port and resort by the Red Sea, best known for having beautiful coral reefs. There is time to relax on a beach with transport and entrance included. You can add to the experience with optional snorkelling and lunch packages (extra cost), which your leader can explain. There are several good restaurants in Aqaba for our evening meal together.

Drive from Aqaba to the Dead Sea with optional trip to see Bethany Beyond the Jordan
Leaving the Red Sea, we transfer (4hr 30min) to the Dead Sea, where salt levels of around 34 percent keep you effortlessly afloat. There’s plenty of free time to experience this extraordinary phenomenon and to cover yourself with the Dead Sea mud, which is said to have healing powers, before cooling off in the swimming pool.
There’s also the chance to visit Bethany Beyond the Jordan, said to be the site of Jesus Christ’s baptism by John the Baptist, a moment marking the new era of Christianity. This is an optional trip that can be booked and paid for locally. It’s about a 15-minute drive from the Dead Sea hotel and the entire visit usually lasts 1hr 45min, including the drive to/from the hotel. Those who do not wish to visit the site will check into the hotel.
This evening, we have a group dinner to celebrate our time in Jordan and say our farewells.

Transfer to international airport
Transfer directly to the international airport for your flight home. This journey takes around an hour or less and does not need to pass through Amman so it avoids the city traffic.
End Dead Sea
Breakfast marks our final meal, an excellent chance to reminisce about an adventure packed with excitement. To make your return journey home easier, there’s a free shared transfer back to the airport. Alternatively, if you’d like further days to relax by the Dead Sea, speak to your sales representative about extending your stay.
Hotels and a private Bedouin camp
On this Jordan adventure, we stay in a range of accommodations: a three-star hotel in downtown Amman, a modest but well-located hotel in Petra, and an unforgettable stay in a simple Bedouin camp in the desert. We end in style, relaxing in a five-star hotel by the Dead Sea.

Amman: Hotel Khan Khediwe (nights 1 & 2)
In Amman, we usually stay at Khan Khediwe, a three-star hotel in the bustle of downtown Amman. It’s ideally placed for our adventures, close to a market and within walking distance of the Roman amphitheatre and shopping areas.
Petra: Hotel in Wadi Musa (nights 3-5)
We spend three nights in Wadi Musa, the town adjacent to Petra. Demand for rooms near Petra is very high; over the years, we have built relationships with several accommodations, which allows us to secure spots even during peak season. The hotels are modest but well located. Some are within walking distance of the main entrance to the Red Rose City, others are no more than a 10-minute transfer away. Places we stay include Edom Hotel, Petra Plaza, Petra Palace, Amra Palace and La Maison among others.
Wadi Rum: Exodus Private Camp (night 6)
Used exclusively by our groups, this permanent Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum is a highlight for many travellers. We sleep in simple, traditional tents sheltered by rugged stone cliffs and enjoy the warm hospitality of our Bedouin hosts. In the evening, they serve us a zarb dinner, cooked underground in the traditional manner, while the rest of the night is typically spent around the campfire, chatting and sharing an unforgettable experience.
Aqaba: Lacosta Hotel (night 7)
In the heart of modern Aqaba, the four-star Lacosta Hotel is within easy reach of shops, restaurants and the Red Sea. The rooms come with furniture and beds from the Middle East, while the hotel also has a gym and restaurant.
Dead Sea: Holiday Inn Dead Sea (night 8)
A standout stay for many is the Holiday Inn at the Dead Sea. Checking into this five-star property allows us to kick back and relax, perhaps in one of the many pools or with a float in the salty Dead Sea waters from the private beach. There’s also a free-to-use gym and a selection of excellent restaurants and bars.
Worth knowing
- Demand for accommodation in Wadi Musa (Petra) is high; this can create problems with hot water and plumbing. In general, the accommodation is more basic compared to the rest of Jordan.
- Single supplements are available for this trip but are not applicable at Wadi Rum.

Visiting Jordan, especially Petra has been on my bucket list for some time. What an amazing country which didn’t disappoint. This started from the earliest moments of flying out there and speaking to Jordanians on the flight I was touched and humbled by their kindness and friendliness. It was my first organised trip and I was somewhat anxious about what to expect, but the people in my group were super. I havent laughed so much in such a long time. It is a full on itinerary but we were looked after so well and given many opportunities to really embrace the authenticity of the country, from visiting the stunning historical sites to walking through the city streets at night and soaking up the spices and culture of the many markets. We had a very comfortable coach with plenty of space for us all and a very safe and careful driver. It was one of the best holidays I have ever had and I am so glad and grateful to have had this wonderful opportunity.

There were many! Petra of course is stunning, from the Treasury to the Monastery and Altar of High Sacrifice as well as walking of the main routes to capture different views, and enjoy tea with the local Bedouins. Mount Nebo. Watching the shooting stars in the clear night sky Wadi Rum was pretty special too. Walking through the local streets at night and experience the local culture and food. Visiting the mosque (in my free time) in Aqaba. Finally Bethany was a particular highlight and was peaceful and moving.

Mikhled was our group leader who worked so hard to keep us all happy and somehow found the energy and time to look after all our individual needs. He has the patience of a saint and worked tirelessly to make sure we had every opportunity to enjoy the authenticity of Jordan. Clearly very knowledgeable, kind, considerate, passionate and committed to his job and country .
Advice for Potential Travellers
Dont hesitate. I felt very safe and looked after. Jordanians are very peaceful and gentle. This was such an incredible experience that will stay with me forever, made even better by the stunning country, local people, history, sites, wonderful personalities in my group and group leader - I cant wait to return some day.
An absolutely breathtaking and fantastic trip
This trip was everything I hoped it would be and had been on my bucket list for some time. And it is almost impossible to put into words.
I have been lucky enough to travel with Exodus on numerous occasions, and this trip is one of the best I have ever been on. I was lucky enough to be with a wonderful group of people as well.
The itinerary is perfectly thought through – from the historical sights of Amman and Jerash to the walking at Petra to the occasions to relax (especially at the Red Sea and the Dead Sea.)
Jordan is a stunning country; rich in culture and history with extraordinary landscapes. From the grandeur of Petra to the serenity of the Wadi Rum to the relaxation of the Dead Sea. Jordan really is the total package.
The people of Jordan are amongst the friendliest in the world, and need us as tourists right now. If you are wondering whether it is safe – IT IS!
The transport used was very comfortable with WiFi, charging points and air conditioning on the coach. (Our driver was also great – felt very safe with him at the wheel.)

I have two, and I cannot decide which one should be most inspiring! 1) Petra was everything I had imagined, and the "reveal" of The Treasury as you walked down towards it was breathtaking. 2) The night in the Wadi Rum was perfectly serene - from watching the sunset, to star gazing to seeing the sun rise was just magical.

I was very lucky to have had Mikhled as my Tour Leader for this trip. Mikhled is a wonderful leader. We could not have asked for a better or more knowledgeable Tour Leader. He shared his knowledge and love for his country with passion together with a sense of fun. He guided us with sensitivity, kindness and with the patience of a saint. Exodus are truly lucky to have him as a Tour Leader, and as a proud Jordanian he is a true representative for his wonderful country of Jordan. He went above and beyond on several occasions including sharing some wonderful historical photos of Amman, Jerash and Petra after we had visited them - a real insight.

GO! Jordan is totally safe, in fact I felt safer in Jordan than I do in London. The people of Jordan need our support as tourists. Hope that Mikhled is your tour leader. Be prepared for large meals - the Jordanians like to feed people! Take loose comfortable clothing. Take some cat treats - there are dozens of friendly cats. Mind the salt in your eyes in the Dead Sea.
Incredible week!
This has been on my bucket list for some time and it did not disappoint. The variety of each day made it feel like so much more than just a week. Petra was even better than I imagined but every location held its magic. Ayyad our guide was superb and so knowledgeable about his country and its history and went above and beyond to give us a memorable trip. Despite all the troubles in neighbouring countries, I never once felt unsafe and in fact with so few tourists, the Jordanians need our support with tourist areas being so quiet (though great as nowhere was crowded and the people are just lovely – everyone was so welcoming wherever we went) It was lovely to end the week at the dead sea and being able to use the lovely facilities at the hotel. After such a busy week, getting a few hours by one of the pools was much needed as well as a float in the famous dead sea.

2 winners for me; Petra at night - to see the treasury lit up at night and to walk down the gorge lit by lanterns was simply magical against the beautiful night sky. Also camping in the bedouin camp. This was also truly magical; sleeping under the incredible night sky, sitting around the campfire then watching shooting stars until we could no longer keep our eyes open - I will never forget this night!

Ayyad was brilliant - great sense of humour and always looking for the best experiences for us such as joining us to climb to the high place of sacrifice in Petra but then showing us an alternative longer route down. He clearly loves his country and did his best to teach us about his culture and language which all went towards making the trip even more special. As a vegetarian, he was great at always ensuring that I was catered for when we had our evening meals and did a good job of organising a group meal almost every night.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Just do it! Be prepared for lots of walking, especially on the days visiting Petra and for varying temperatures eg Aqaba typically much hotter than Amman. Wearing loose clothing covering knees shoulders (for women) was actually great at keeping cool. As a vegetarian, main meals were scarce but there was always something to eat, usually mezze style dishes - just be prepared for limited choice. Don't take your best swimwear to the dead sea - the mud might not come out afterwards..!! Walking sandals are fine for most days but walking shoes at least for Petra as it's difficult underfoot at times. Do Petra by night - don't expect much and you might be surprised! It was a highlight for me. If you have room, take your own snorkel to save renting them in Aqaba and if you're a cat lover, some cat treats will be very much welcomed by the Jordanian cats..! I was very popular..! Cash was needed for the optional trips but I mainly used cards in shops and at restaurants - they were accepted widely. Finally no need to take towels and all hotels had hairdryers!
Would never book with Exodus again
Appalling customer service from Exodus on return from my trip. A 5* resort billed as a “standout for many” by Exodus (Holiday Inn Dead Sea) failed to provide functioning air conditioning & was dishonest about it. Despite back and forth for several months, Exodus failed to investigate my complaint claiming they were unable to get a response from a supplier they continue to use and whilst acknowledging my experience was unacceptable, “reassured” (!)me my experience was a “one off”.

Go to Jordan! But don't book with Exodus. I have friends who have traveled to Jordan with competitor companies and have thankfully not had the woeful and distressing experience I had with Exodus.

I loved Jordan. I loved all of it. Such ancient land with complex history, there were moments where it felt like time itself was staring at you. Petra is magnificent; Wadi Rum calms the mind; the river Jordan nourishes the spirit; and local people’s hospitality warms the heart.

I remember the moment I fell in love with Jordan: we were wandering around in the Amman citadel and just after 4pm the call for prayer came, in that moment I knew I was in trouble. I left a part of my heart in Jordan and I've come back heartbroken.

Go with an open mind and go with the flow. On a trip like this, sometimes you just can't stick to the itinerary. For example, our group were visiting Madaba and the King of Jordan rocked up (yes, really), meaning that we couldn't visit two of the planned sights that particular day. But Ahmad, our brilliant guide, managed to take the group to one alternative venue that day and then squeezed in Mount Nebo on our penultimate day at the Dead Sea. Flexibility is key.

Marvellous country, the history and architecture- so enthusiastically brought to life by Muayed, the people, the food. Absolutely fabulous!

An amazing trip of a lifetimec
This was a wonderful trip of a lifetime! Because of the unstable political situation in the Middle East I was unsure whether to go or not but I was so pleased that I decided not to cancel.
Jordan is so full of history and sites of religious significance and the people so friendly and welcoming. Ahmad, our guide was wonderful and obviously proud of his country, he not only showed us the unforgettable historic sights but also explained the culture of its people, introducing us to many of his ‘cousins’ who offered us very interesting insights into the foods and locally produced goods available! The added bonus of traveling when we did was that there were very few other tourists at the major sites, for obvious reasons, including Petra.

Petra had to be the most awe inspiring point of the trip, it was magnificent! Having walked around all the amazing tombs, monuments and Roman ruins during the day we then went back in the evening to see it by candle light. This was a very moving experience with local Bedouin musicians playing traditional instruments creating a very contemplative atmosphere.

Ahmad was wonderful! He was very knowledgeable and obviously proud of his country and its heritage. He went out of his way to make sure that everyone was catered for as we were a very mixed age group with varying levels of fitness. The day we went to Madaba we discovered that the King of Jordan was visiting the same day so it was very crowded and many roads were closed off for the visit. Ahmad made sure we negotiated the crowds and, after seeing the King drive past (and wave to us!) he took us to a restaurant, owned by a ‘cousin’ were we all had coffee and waited for the crowds to disperse. This delay meant that we could not visit Mt Nebo that day but Ahmad made sure we visited on the way to the Dead Sea on the last day. Instead he took us to Little Petra which was lovely in the evening sun. We could not have wished for a better, more knowledgeable and helpful group leader than Ahmad.
Advice for Potential Travellers
When staying at the Bedouin camp overnight you will definitely need a sleeping bag liner, the facilities are very basic and the bed covers not very clean. Also it would be advisable to take walking boots as through the whole week you will be walking on quite rough rocky and/or sandy terrain.
