Arrive Muscat; afternoon Dhow cruise and visit Mutrah Souq
Upon arrival in Muscat in the morning; you will be met by your tour leader and transferred to our hotel.
Later in the afternoon after the main group briefing, we will be picked up from our hotel and travel through the old part of Muscat to visit the Sidab Women’s association where there is the opportunity to interact with the local women and enjoy a coffee together. Next, we pay a short visit to the Bait Al Zubair Museum before having a photo stop outside the gates of the Sultan’s palace. After a short transfer to the marina, we’ll embark on a relaxed dhow cruise (traditional fisherman’s boat) to see the Muscat coast through the eyes of ancient seafarers who plied this route for centuries. During the cruise, soft drinks, tea, coffee and dates will be served on board.
In the evening, we stop at a local restaurant for dinner and will be transported back through the centuries on a visit to the bustling, colourful Mutrah Souq. Here there will be lots of photo opportunities and chances to observe the local way of life whilst wandering around this vibrant traditional Arab market.
Note: On departures where the group flight arrives after midday, some of the sightseeing detailed above will be done on day 2 of the tour instead. Your leader will advise of your exact schedule locally.

Start Muscat; afternoon dhow cruise and visit Mutrah Souq
Arrive at the start hotel before midday to ensure you can join the main group briefing and the dhow cruise in the afternoon.
After the briefing, we are picked up from our hotel and travel through the old part of Muscat to visit the Sidab Women’s Association where we can interact with the local women and enjoy a coffee together. Next, we pay a short visit to the Bait Al Zubair Museum before a photo stop outside the gates of the Sultan’s palace. After a short transfer to the marina, we embark on a relaxed dhow cruise (traditional fisherman’s boat) to see the Muscat coast through the eyes of the ancient seafarers who plied this route for centuries. Visit Muscat's Grand Mosque; onto Sur via beautiful Wadi Shab. Evening visit to turtle reserve
After a hotel breakfast, we check out and visit the Grand Mosque, the highlight of the Omani capital. The handmade carpets, chandeliers and the ceiling of the great dome in the main prayer room are must-sees.
Please note: Women should be fully covered and carry a headscarf; men should wear trousers.
We then drive (approximately 1hr 30min) to the Bimah Sinkhole, a spectacular limestone crater with blue-green water at the bottom, and Wadi Tiwi where we enjoy a walk and picnic lunch before transferring (approximately one hour) to our hotel in Sur, where we spend the night.
After an early dinner, we drive (approximately one hour) to Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve. Oman is an important area for green turtles in the Indian Ocean and the green back turtles are heavily protected by the government of Oman. In fact, more than 275 of the Sultanate’s beaches double as nesting grounds for five of the seven recognised sea turtle species, the most common being the green back.
Here we are led to the beach by an ecologist to see turtles return to their beach to lay eggs. (Please note, the main nesting season is June to August; at other times of the year, there may or not be turtles every night but a visit to the reserve is still worthwhile).
Accommodation: Sur Plaza (or similar)
Drive to Wadi Bani Khalid, swim in the turquoise pools and enjoy a picnic lunch. Continue to Wahiba Sands and explore the spectacular dunes. Overnight in the desert.
This morning after breakfast, we transfer (approximately 1hr 45min) to the desert oasis of Wadi Bani Khalid to relax and enjoy a swim in the beautiful turquoise pools. We also have a picnic lunch before continuing (approximately 60 to 90 minutes) to the Wahiba Desert.
Please note, occasionally wild swimming in the wadi may not be possible due to safety reasons if, for example, water levels are high following rainfall or if it is raining at the time of your visit as the rocks can be slippery – your leader will inform you if swimming is not advisable.
Here, on the edge of the desert, we change vehicles from the minibus to 4WDs to begin our desert experience.
The Wahiba Sands, a vast mass of undulating red and white sands and dunes rising up to 655ft (200m) are also host to a variety of flora and fauna. The ever-changing patterns of the dunes are a photographer’s delight. We drive towards the dunes and our desert accommodation (approximately one hour) to check-in for the evening.
During our time at the camp, there is sometimes the opportunity to take a camel ride (optional – extra cost).

Morning visit to a Bedouin family and enjoy Omani coffee; visit Birkat al Mouz and walk through its oasis and date plantations; onto Nizwa
We have breakfast at our desert accommodation before checking out and driving towards the ancient city of Nizwa, the former capital of Oman. En route, we visit a Bedouin family and enjoy kahwa (Omani coffee) and spend time with them learning about their customs and traditional way of life.
We continue our drive via Birkat al Mouz, one of the best-known village ruins in the region. We walk through its oasis and date plantations before continuing to Nizwa. With the two sets of ruins, a large banana plantation and the scenic surroundings, the site is also home to the old Falaj irrigation system listed as a Unesco World Heritage site.
Upon arrival in Nizwa, we check into our hotel where we spend the next two nights.

Transfer to Jabrin, one of the finest castles in Oman; stop at historic Bahla Fort; enjoy a walk and picnic lunch in Wadi Nakhr. Visit Jebel Shams for amazing views
After breakfast at the hotel, we take a short drive (approximately 30 minutes) to visit Jabrin, the finest of Oman’s castles built in the late 17th century, which became a seat of Omani learning. The castle displays the highest achievement in Omani ceiling painting and beautifully executed woodcarvings.
We also pause at Bahla Fort for a photo, the only Unesco-listed fort in the country and lovingly restored over many years before transferring (approximately 1hr 30min) to Wadi Nakhr for a short walk. We have lunch in a restaurant before proceeding to Jebel Shams, the highest mountain in Oman, and where we can enjoy spectacular views of the ‘Grand Canyon of Arabia’.
Later in the afternoon, we transfer (approximately 45 minutes) to the village of Misfat Al Arbayeen, passing the ruins of an old fort on the way. We continue through narrow alleys between old stone houses and take a short walk in Al Hamra village before returning (approximately 30 minutes) to Nizwa for the evening.

Today is a long day and we start our morning with a visit to the live cattle auction market in Nizwa, the one day of the week where this ancient city truly comes alive with farmers and traders arriving from near and far to barter and trade in one of the most renowned markets in the Middle East.
We visit the impressive Nizwa Fort, built in the 17th century to defend the natural wealth and strategic location of the city. Later we visit the renowned souq, famous for intricately handcarved khanjars (traditional curved daggers), silver jewellery and livestock trading.
Departing Nizwa, we continue to Wadi Bani Auf; this stretch of graded road is very adventurous as it involves steep bends and bumpy roads. In wet conditions, it may not be possible to drive this section of road due to safety. If this occurs, we take an alternative route.
We then stop at the charming mountain village of Bilad Sayt, where one is struck by the beauty of the landscape. Lunch today will be a packed lunch.
This afternoon, we have a photo stop at Nakhal Fort and hot spring. The exact date on which this ancient fort was built is unknown, but many believe it was constructed in pre-Islamic times, more than 1,500 years ago.
We then transfer back to Muscat for our final evening in the capital city of Oman.

Hotels and Wahiba Sands desert resort
We spend five nights in hotels and one night in a desert resort with a spectacular location in Wahiba Sands. Below are the accommodations we typically use:
Muscat: Radisson Blu Hotel Muscat (nights 1 and 6)
We start and finish at this 153-room Radisson Blu resort, just 9mi (15km) from Muscat International Airport. There’s local and international cuisine at Olivos Restaurant and plenty of drinks at the Lazy Lizard bar. Alternatively, you may prefer a dip in the temperature-controlled outdoor pool or to relax on a sun lounger.
Sur: Sur Plaza (night 2)
Enjoy traditional Omani hospitality during our stay at the 89-room Sur Plaza. There’s a pool and gym, while the Oyster Restaurant (which serves a mixture of local and international cuisines) has views over the mountains.
Wahiba Sands: Arabian Nights Resort (night 3)
Spend an unforgettable night at this desert resort, which is only reachable by 4×4. Despite the remote location of the resort, the villa-style rooms are comfortable and there’s even a pool for a quick dip in the desert. There’s also a restaurant serving local and international dishes, plus a pool bar mixing up cocktails.
Nizwa: Al Diyar Hotel (nights 4-5)
Modest and traditional, Al Diyar provides a well-located place to stay for our adventures. It also has two outdoor pools and a restaurant, while Nizwa Souq is around five minutes’ drive away.
Worth knowing
- With accommodation in Oman, couples – particularly unmarried couples – may be automatically allocated twin beds rather than doubles, unless requested otherwise. Please advise us at the time of booking if you are travelling as a couple and would like to request a double bed.

A beautiful country.
Most Inspirational Moment
Not on the itinerary (seeing the Royal Opera House) by night. The grand mosque, only our group inside before 9am, I walked in not expecting much looked up, and had a wow moment. The turtle nesting, a starry night by the ocean seeing turtles through the 5 stages, unreal. Very lucky to have seen this at the end of the season. I loved the 4x4 driving to the Canyon and the drive through the date plantations. The last two days, I thought were the best, raw nature at your fingertips. The souk in Nizwa was very chilled, a relaxed experience. The cattle market was an eye opener. The Desert was a bit disappointing, after Wadi Rum, Sossusvlei it didn't do much for me. The hotel was good, yet I thought there would be more to do. A special week where we enjoyed everything in peace. The six of us, and few other tourists in sight for the majority of the week, because of the fear of travelling to the Middle East and the heat. The Omanis are very welcoming and I felt safe.

Brilliant. Ahmed provided fantastic insight, culture, and personal stories detailing the lifestyle of the Omanis on the trip. Fascinating. Ask questions to find out more. The drivers were great.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Wear linen. You'll be covered up most of the trip. The only people I saw on the trip not appropriately dressed were Brits in strappy dresses! There are signs everywhere about the dress code and respecting the culture, yet this group couldn't manage to put clothes on. Bring a UV umbrella and electric fan if you are not very good with heat. It was 43 degrees for us in September! A lot of travelling, not much walking on the trip if you are into your fitness. Don't forget your refillable water bottle.

Ahmed was helpful and his bus talks and guiding expanded our knowledge. It was Ramadan and managing that and tourist guiding must have been challenging. The driver was exceptional of the tour bus and the 4 Wd drivers also filled one with confidence despite the challenging terrain.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Add on a trip to Salalah for 3 days to visit the Frankincense trail. Add an extra day in Muscat for additional museums
A really beautiful adventure
My week in Oman was such a special experience. Having travelled there without much knowledge of the country, I was absolutely blown away with the beauty and adventure it has to offer. This was my first trip with Exodus and I was really impressed with the level of communication in the lead up to the trip. I felt secure and confident with the arrangements and had clarity with the itinerary and instructions throughout. The agenda for the week was jam-packed but it meant that we got to see SO much while we were there. It’s not a trip for someone looking to unwind and relax as there is very little time for that, but if you’re looking for amazing scenery, interesting experiences and fun memories, then this one is for you!
Most Inspirational Moment
My favourite part of the week was that we got to experience a different terrain/area every day. City, waterside, desert and mountains - there was literally always something new and amazing to see! The standout moments in particular for me were: - swimming in the wadi (I'll never forget that!) - watching the turtle lay eggs on the beach at night - watching the sunset in the desert - seeing the star filled sky from the beach and desert at night - standing on the edge of the canyon The views from lunch at Misfah Old House were also a delight.

Qais was a brilliant guide. So knowledgable, patient and friendly. I would recommend him as a guide to anyone travelling to Oman.
Advice for Potential Travellers
This isn't a relaxing holiday due to all of the travelling and scheduled sight seeing, but it also isn't majorly active either. There's adventure in the places you visit, but there isn't much in the way of physical activity (e.g. some walking and swimming but usually optional and nothing more exerting than that). This is a non-drinking country so alcohol is limited (you can only purchase in some hotels). This wasn't a problem for me and Exodus had made everyone aware before arriving, but some of the group were surprised/complained each day that alcohol wasn't an option with meals, etc. (which was quite disrespectful!) So it's worth bearing that in mind if alcohol consumption is something that would impact your trip significantly.
Oman
A really enjoyable trip though it would have been good to have had a few extra nights. Fantastic scenery, a varied mix of locations, and accommodation was good throughout.
Most Inspirational Moment
There were quite a few. I really enjoyed the desert camp and would have loved a second night there. Travelling in the 4x4s was pretty exciting, viewing Oman's grand canyon which was spectacular, having lunch in an ancient village high in the mountains. Nizwa with its fort, Souq and animal auction was interesting. Highlights in Muscat were the Grand Mosque and the sunset cruise in a traditional dhow.

Qais was very enthusiastic and was happy to talk about the Omani culture. He worked really hard to make the trip an enjoyable one.
Advice for Potential Travellers
A very busy week with 1 night in each location, only 2 nights in Nizwa. We only saw one turtle at Ras Al Jinz in December which wasn't the main nesting season. There was a lot of waiting until our group went to the beach. It was very dark so watch your step! Make sure you pack some loose fitting, long sleeved clothes.

Advice for Potential Travellers
Prepare for some longish drives and maybe slight difficulty with avegetarian diet, but these are not insurmountable.
A busy but very worthwhile week exploring the Pearl of Arabia
I very much recommend this one week exploration of the cultural and ancient heritage of wonderful Oman. It’s a busy tour but all forms of travel and accommodation are very comfortable. The people we met throughout the tour were all proud of their heritage and extremely friendly. Oman is a very safe country. The itinerary is varied as are the fabulous landscapes encountered. Most meals were included and of good quality…plenty of affordable, tasty food to be had in local cafes/restaurants …avoid branded “western” restaurants which are very expensive. Our guide, Zubair, was very knowledgeable, very funny, worked hard and was clearly a great ambassador for his country.
Stunning landscapes!
An excellent holiday in an amazing country – we fitted so much into a week it felt like we’d been there for a fortnight! The tour has a great mix of activities in different locations from cities, to desert, to mountains, which gives a great flavour of Oman. The locals were friendly and welcoming, and the food was tasty. Our guide Zubair was very very good – full of information about the country and sites, very patient at answering all of our questions, a great sense of humour, and well organised to herd the group around to schedule. I’d recommend this trip!

This was a once in a lifetime adventure to one of the most beautiful places on earth with a wonderful group of like-minded people. Oman is so diverse in its landscape and there is so much to see. It is culturally so different and the people are so kind, helpful and gentle. It’s safe and welcoming.

A week in wonderful Oman
A really full week exploring so much of beautiful Oman. It’s not too strenuous but there are some early starts in order to fit in all the sites. A very clean country and littering equals jail! Beaches, mountains and deserts, it has it all.

This has to be watching a beautiful green turtle laying and burying her eggs on the beach. It was just magical and something that I will never forget. The desert camp was wonderful too.

Zubair was great, really well organised and good fun. Seamless hotel changes and clear instructions to us all to allow easy departures each day.
Advice for Potential Travellers
If you like a drink then I’d hugely recommend that you take duty free with you. There are no shops selling alcohol in Oman. Some hotels have bars but they are very expensive. Remember to take t shirts with sleeves and long trousers.
Fantastic Oman holiday
This holiday was a fantastic mix of ancient sites (castles, forts, ruined mud brick villages) and natural wonders – The Grand Canyon of Arabia (Jebel Shams), the endless sand dunes of Wahiba Sands, swimming in wadis etc.
Most Inspirational Moment
There were many highlights - watching a turtle nest and lay its eggs, watching the sunset over the sand dunes, the hustle and bustle of the morning cattle auction at Nizwa, Muscat's Grand Mosque with it's incredible dome and chandelier, sampling countless dates and drinking Omani coffee. The camp in Wahiba Sands was also very luxurious considering its location.
