- Where to Travel in January
The best place to travel in January depends on your wanderlust: if you’re in search of sun, conditions are excellent in the southern hemisphere, but to witness the aurora borealis, head northwards.
ARGENTINA
Ideal temperatures for trekking
January marks the peak of Argentina’s summer, and in the vast southern reaches of Patagonia, the landscape is in full bloom and the days are delightfully long. With average temperatures ranging from 5°C and 18°C, adventures in the region are more accessible and enjoyable this time of year. So why not consider hiking through Torres del Paine National Park on our Patagonian Highlights trip or walk towards the towering Fitzroy Massif in Los Glaciares National Park on our Classic Patagonia Treks? ICELAND
The perfect time for glacier trekking
Iceland is another Nordic country that’s perfect to visit in January, for the snow-covered landscapes and frozen waterfalls across Thingvellir National Park. Iceland’s glaciers are covered with fresh blue ice this month, which makes it a great time to go glacier trekking with ice crampons too. Visits to Diamond Beach near the Jökulsárlón glacier, in colder temperatures means you’ll also see larger blocks of glacial ice sitting on the black sands. COSTA RICA
Soak up the sun in Costa Rica
Experience the delights of Costa Rica in its dry season, when the weather is warm and sunny, and the humidity is lower. You should still expect the odd tropical shower, but overall, January offers optimum conditions for spotting wildlife and getting out and about to try the adventures for which Costa Rica is renowned. Most of our trips cover a lot of ground, including our Discover Costa Rica trip and Costa Rica Adventure, which works its way westward from the Caribbean Coast to the Pacific Coast. SWEDEN
See the Northern Lights in the Arctic Circle
When you set out on an adventure into the remote Swedish wilderness, deep in the Arctic Circle, the weather may be bitterly cold and the daylight is limited, but it’s a great month to go searching for the aurora borealis. It’s undoubtedly one of the best places to travel in January, thanks to the snowy conditions that set the stage for winter activities, including snowshoeing, husky dog sledging and a thrilling snowmobile safari, which you can do on our Artic Circle Aurora Adventure. INDIA
Optimum conditions for cycling
If you want to avoid those sweltering summer temperatures, January is a great month to visit India, as it’s not only cooler, but it’s also part of their dry season, meaning the days are bright and sunny. With slim chances of rain and a refreshing coastal breeze, cycling the coast of Kerala is a great choice for an adventure in January. While in the northwest, Rajasthan also enjoys average highs of 22°C, which makes it perfect for visiting the region’s iconic temples, monuments and forts by bike. View all our India trips here
