- Where to Travel in May
May is a great month to visit Europe before the crowds arrive during the peak summer months. Or head to South America for the start of the trekking season in Peru.
AZORES
Witness the baleen whale migration
Temperatures are warming up nicely in the Azores in May, making walking conditions particularly pleasant. The Azores is also the best place to travel in May for whale watching as it’s when the baleen whales migrate through the archipelago. There’s the chance to see bottlenose dolphins, pilot whales, sperm whales and blue whales too on our Walking in the Azores trip, where you’ll explore three of the nine islands over eight memorable days. PERU
Superb conditions for trekking
The hiking season in Peru really begins in May, coinciding with the start of the dry season. So, visiting before the peak season is in full flow can mean fewer crowds. It’s pleasantly warm, which makes it perfect for guided jungle walks and boat trips in the Tambopata Reserve before flying to Cusco to complete the trail to Machu Picchu on our Inca Trail & the Amazon Rainforest trip, or simply focus all of your time trekking past spectacular ancient ruins and cloud forests on The Inca Trail. ITALY
Get ahead of the summertime crowds
As the weather warms up, gardens across Italy burst into bloom, with tulips, orchids and magnolias while the streets are draped in Bougainvillea. It’s a glorious time to be outside before swells of tourists descend in the summer months. Italy is one of the best places to travel in May for walking, admiring beautiful coastlines on our Walks of the Cinque Terre and Portofino trip or taking a wine-orientated exploration in Tuscany on our Chianti Walking & Wine trip. BORNEO
Spot orangutans in the jungle
Borneo is best experienced between March and October, so visiting in May puts you safely inside this window. It’s the ideal time to see orangutans on our Borneo Wildlife Discoverer trip, as they congregate around water sources in groups. As it’s dry season, proboscis monkeys and Asian pygmy elephants can also be spotted on our cruise along the mighty Kinabatangan River. Visibility is good for snorkelling too off the coast of the nearby islands from Kota Kinabalu, which are easily accessed by a 10-minute ferry. View all Borneo trips here
TURKEY
Fly and trek in Cappadocia
May is arguably one of the best times to visit Cappadocia in central Turkey, as this month brings blue-sky mornings, which are great for hot air balloon rides over the fairy chimneys. With warm days averaging around 23 °C and cooler evenings with a low of 10°C, these are ideal conditions for Walking in Cappadocia, where our route takes you through the Red Valley, Pasabaglari and the Goreme Open Air Museum.
