Fish River Canyon

Fish River Canyon

Fish River Canyon Trips

In the far south of Namibia, the stupendous Fish River Canyon carves itself into the earth. It’s the largest canyon in the southern hemisphere, and arguably second only to the Grand Canyon in terms of size. At 160km long, up to 27km wide and over 500m deep, only the Blue Nile Gorge in Ethiopia rivals it for second spot.

Approaching the Fish River Canyon from the north is like arriving from space. The otherworldly landscape breaks up into a series of cliffs and boulders as the river meanders along below. The views from the rim are spectacular, and our Fish River Canyon tours make time for a walk alongside it in the afternoon, to be rewarded by superb sunset views.

Fish River Adventure Holidays

We had a most enjoyable 3 weeks on this trip, and made friends on our group of ten. The camping was work, putting up our tents (with help, thanks, you know who you are !). We stayed two nights in most places, 3 in Etosha. Very early morning starts, breakfast at 7 with tents down on moving days. It was dark, and cold! However, the tents were very comfortable with beds and mattresses, and we slept really well. The food was delicious and plentiful. After long days driving, our guides turned in and cooked for us. The breakfasts were delicious too.

Helen Burrell Victoria Falls to Cape Town – Camping

The adventure was amazing. Small group of 11. Everyday was so different from the last. I really liked driving through the countries even though sometimes the roads weren’t the best (was prepared for that). The wildlife we saw was beautiful! The hotels were fine.

Cindy Hallsten Cape Town to Victoria Falls – Hotel/Lodge

This trip provided a very varied experience showcasing both the animals and the scenery of the countries we passed through. We weren’t sure what to expect from camping in Africa and the facilities on offer, although basic at times, surpassed our expectations. We did the trip from 16 June – 5 July, and benefitted from seeing Victoria Falls in full flow, uncrowded campsites and great weather (though a couple of nights and early mornings were cold until the sun was up). Not sure if we were just lucky, but we saw no rain until Cape Town. Every day provided a new adventure and made the early starts and long journeys on some days absolutely worth it. We couldn’t have asked for a better ‘introduction’ to Africa.
