Top 5 Experiences when Trekking in India

Himalayan Monasteries: Trekking in the Himalayan region of India is a soul-stirring experience that offers stunning views of snow-capped peaks, lush valleys and serene monasteries perched on hillsides. One of the most iconic treks in this region is the Hemis Monastery trek in Ladakh. The trek takes you through barren landscapes, rugged mountains and remote villages before culminating at the Hemis Monastery, the largest and wealthiest monastery in Ladakh. The tranquil atmosphere of the monastery, the colourful prayer flags fluttering in the wind and the sound of monks chanting prayers create a sense of peace and serenity that is totally mesmerising.

Riding the Toy Train from Darjeeling to Ghoom: Trekking in the Darjeeling region is not complete without experiencing the historic toy train ride from Darjeeling to Ghoom. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, takes you on a nostalgic journey through lush tea gardens, misty forests and remote hillside villages. The slow pace of the train lets you soak in the magnificent scenery and appreciate mountain life in the Himalaya. The train chugs its way up steep gradients and around sharp bends, offering panoramic views of the Himalayan range and the verdant valleys below.

Cruise the Keralan Backwaters: Trekking in the southern state of Kerala gives you the opportunity to explore the tranquil backwaters of the region. A houseboat cruise through the interconnected network of rivers, lakes and lagoons lets you witness the idyllic beauty of rural Kerala up close. The backwaters are lined with coconut palms, rice paddies and traditional villages where life moves at a leisurely pace. Savour delicious local cuisine, meet the friendly villagers and watch vibrant sunsets over the water. This serene adventure provides a stark contrast to the rugged terrains of the Himalayas and showcases the diverse landscapes and cultures of India.

Village Homestay in Ladakh: Staying with local families in remote villages is a rewarding aspect of trekking in Ladakh. A village homestay gives you a glimpse into the traditional way of life of the Ladakhi people, known for their warmth, hospitality and rich cultural heritage. From helping with daily chores to participating in traditional ceremonies and celebrations, you can immerse yourself in the local customs and traditions. Share meals with the host family, listen to folk tales around the fire and sleep under the starlit sky where you’ll experienxe a unique camaraderie and connection with the community.

Flight over the Himalayas: For a once-in-a-lifetime and awe-inspiring experience, nothing beats a scenic flight over the Himalayan range. Experience a bird’s eye view of some of the highest peaks in the world, including Mount Everest. The panoramic views of snow-dusted mountains, glacial lakes and deep valleys are a sight to behold. The sheer scale and grandeur of the Himalayas are best appreciated from the air, as you get a sense of the vastness and beauty of this natural wonder.

I have always wanted to visit India and this trip did not disappoint, its such a vibrant country full of traditions, colour and lots of smiles. The children we met who wanted photos of us along with everyone at India gate who we felt like celebrities posing for them in pictures. The overnight train to Varanasi was an adventure and not to be apprehensive about with some wonderful morning views from the train to take in.

An incredible trek during a less crowded time. Drier and cooler at this time of the year though (crossing the pass we started at -5F).
