Walking the Amalfi Coast

This was my first time traveling for pleasure completely alone, and I didn’t really know what to expect. I think I thought it would mostly be a nice break in between jobs, perhaps some time alone for self-reflection and contemplation in a stunningly beautiful place. It was all that but actually so much more for me.

As a self-described “city slicker,” I was pretty much a novice at this hiking thing, and the week was full of experiences that kept pushing me, and challenging me to grow. Each day felt special and offered something different. Pictures cannot do justice to what you need to see in person. In these beautiful coastal towns, when the sun melts into the horizon, and the dusky mountains hug the sky, you don’t know where one ends and one begins. I went in November, which is the off season, and was anxious about how the rain/weather might impact the tour. But even on the day(s) that it rained, that only added to the atmosphere and sense of adventure. It was special seeing the Amalfi Coast at a time when there were no tourists.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were so many highlights, but for me, the most dramatic, climactic one was climbing Mount Vesuvius, a volcano that is still considered active. Climbing inside the rim of the crater, you can see Pompeii from a dizzying height and even feel the steam that wisps from the cracks in the rock. It was like drinking from a heady elixir that produced fear, exhilaration and a sense of accomplishment, all at once. My heart was still in my throat as I descended back down the volcano, but I could not have felt more alive. A once in a lifetime moment.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Paul McDermott was our leader and he is phenomenal. Although he is inherently modest, you could tell that his 35 or so years of experience in the army had trained him to be the type of leader who naturally elicits trust and confidence from his team. As I was a "city slicker" who had never been on a hiking tour like this, I was anxious about how I would do, but I felt safe in Paul's hands - he was so clearly a master of the terrain. It was also evident that Paul must have diligently been doing work behind the scenes to make our tour run smoothly and seamlessly, but he did it with such quiet aplomb and grace that he never made it seem like work; and he added thoughtful touches to help make the tour special, like carrying bottles of wine in his backpack while hiking for several hours, without telling us, just so that we could lazily savor a drink in the sunny piazza during our lunch break on the last day of the tour. It was nice hearing about the Amalfi Coast's history and culture from Paul's perspective, as he is a worldly traveler who has a natural affinity for soaking up the local culture. Most importantly though, Paul was always engaged with the group, and was deeply, sometimes it even seemed telepathically, attuned to the needs of the group as a whole as well as the unique personalities of each individual. By the end of tour, I thought of him not only as our guide but our friend.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be aware that if you go during off-peak season, like in November, as I did, there will be certain things that will be closed and activities that might not be available. For example, I believe during the summer months, you are able to take a boat ride, which is supposed to be lovely. Also, when we ended up in some of the resort towns, some of the sights / shops were closed. Personally, however, this was not an issue for me at - I appreciated that we were able to see the Amalfi Coast in a way that not everybody gets to see, and it felt more intimate and authentic. You should also come prepared for the weather at the time you go. I packed varying layers of fleeces and rain-proof gear, which came in handy. At certain points of the hike, I wore short-sleeved T-shirts and sweated through my gear. When we went to Pompeii, it was freezing in the morning, and that was the one day that I had left my extra fleece in the hotel. Best to pack everything in your backpack just in case.

Amalfi Coast review

Wonderful walks, fabulous views in a beautiful Country.

Most Inspirational Moment

I think the most inspirational moment was visiting Pompeii and walking the upper crater rim of Vesuvius. This volcano sits quietly at the moment but you know that it caused such destruction in its wake all those years ago, its quite awe inspiring.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Paul was our tour leader and he was fabulous, full of knowledge about the area, very organised and a great sense of humour. He made the trip what it was and worked really hard to ensure that everyone was looked after and having a great time.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is a leisurely paced trip however the walking is definitely a level 2 purely because of all of the steps that you have to walk, there wasn't anyone in the group that didn't feel it in their legs at some point during the trip. I'd recommend doing some training prior to the trip to build up your stamina for the walking if you are not used to it.

Walking the Amalfi coast

A fantastic week. You fit a huge amount into your 7 days. Leisurely walking and sight-seeing. As well as lots of history.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking around and then into Vesuvius was a highlight. As were the beautiful views of the Amalfi coast.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eric was a lot of fun. I have never met someone with his passion for, and in depth knowledge of, the process of mozzarella making. He was very helpful in organising extra-curricular activities for our day off and evenings.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't go in the cheese factory with a hangover. I don't think poles are needed for the walks. Visit the gardens in Ravello. Eat as much pistachio ice cream as you can manage. Research and enjoy Italian songs about Funiculars. If you enjoy Pompeii then I recommend visiting Herculaneum on your free day. We combined it with a visit to the archaeological museum in Naples which has some very interesting examples of statues and art from both sites including some eye-opening depictions of goats.

Walking the Amalfi Coast in October

A leisurely and enjoyable break with a well balanced mix of walking, sightseeing and enjoying the views.

Most Inspirational Moment

Inspiration is a little strong for this trip. There were many enjoyable moments, Herculaneum, Pompeii, Vesuvius and the wonderful views along the coast. The moment that will stay in the mind is the view from the café in Villa Cimbrone.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eric was very enthusiastic about this trip and was always eager to stop and point out views or matters of interest. He was helpful in organising activities and meals on our free day and seemed to enjoy the trip as much as we did.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Think carefully about what you take. For us, walking poles and boots (even 2 season) were a little OTT and we could have managed very well with approach shoes. Whilst walking kit and rucksack was fine whilst on the trail when we reached some of our destinations we did feel a little scruffy and out of place.

Stepping out in Amalfi

A well-paced walking tour with stunning scenery, staying in a friendly, family-run hotel

Most Inspirational Moment

The sensational scenery on all of the walks, especially Walk of the Gods and Tre Calli

Thoughts on Group Leader

Albert was a lovely chap whose love of the land shone through

Advice for Potential Travellers

At times, the walking can be fairly demanding; there are lots - and I mean lots! - of steps and occasional rocky paths and scree. Be mindful that within any group there will be differing levels of fitness and experience. Walking boots are essential and a pole is worth considering . Be prepared for variations in temperature ... Bomerano is at > 2000 feet so it can get a little chilly later in the day

Walking the Amalfi Coast October 2016

Wonderful views on all the walks, and a lovely area of Italy to visit.
Lovely hotel with some of the best food I have had on Exodus holidays.

Most Inspirational Moment

The fabulous views, when having a light lunch on Capri after visiting the Palace of Tiberius. The ferry back to Amalfi was also a very interesting experience!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Radu was an excellent leader. Very kind and considerate to all the group, and very knowledgeable about the area in which we were walking.

Advice for Potential Travellers

My advice to any 78 year walkers. There are many many steps on all the walks.

Stunning in so many ways

A short flight to an amazing part of the world. Italy is beautiful and has many different regions, the Amelfi Coast is without a doubt one of the best. Exodos have put together the most wonderful week enabling you to enjoy the very best of the area. It includes walks with breath taking views which, is what you expect but pulls it together with using local friendly hotels where you are more than welcome, local bars and family run businesses. I’ve never felt so welcome.

Most Inspirational Moment

The stunning views and the restaraunt staff including you in making local dishes

Thoughts on Group Leader

Brilliant! Knowledgeable, friendly, fun and very professional in both looking after his guests, locals and the environment. his sole goal was to ensure everyone enjoyed their trip while being safe. he was really thoughtful and really did go out of his way to help, guide and advise us especially on our free days.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take waking poles, the walks are not difficult however, poles are very useful.

What a Fabulous week!

The Almafi coast had always been on my bucket list and this trip covered all I needed.
Superb walks, great group, very knowledgeable helpful friendly guide all made for one of the most memorable holidays I have had!

Most Inspirational Moment

Standing on the top of Vesuvius and the surrounding areas it devistated

Thoughts on Group Leader

Paul.... Natural guide, very friendly, knew lots of anecdotal information on where we had been and going. Kept the group together and motivated. All round very nice chap :)

Advice for Potential Travellers

You don't need anything specialised light rucksack, water and some sunscreen, let Exodus do the rest

Walking the Amalfi Coast

As always with Exodus this was an amazing trip. The scenery, the hotel, the people, I could not fault one element of it. The Hotel was clean and tidy and the staff were very friendly and very proud of their establishment as they should be. They have their own gardens and fields so we had fresh produce everyday cooked to a high standard.

Most Inspirational Moment

It has to be the scenery, it was spectacular. The best walk was the walk of the gods, it was absolutley beautiful. It was also a great privilege to be able to stand at the top of vesuvius. Pompei was stunning and I'm amazed at the hard work and attention to detail the experts have put in to this for the rest of the world to admire.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader was very knowledgeable, enthusiastic and attentive. He made sure everybody was happy at all times.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There are quite a few steps so if you do have problems with knees then walking poles will be a great help. The only other advice I can give is to book this trip as soon as poss as you will enjoy every minute of it.

Great walking amongst fantastic scenery

Some fantastic “easy” hill walking around Amalfi.

Most Inspirational Moment

Joining the hotel staff for cookery lessons. You got a real sense of "joining in" with the family run hotel kithen

Thoughts on Group Leader

I have travelled several times with Exodus & never had a bad tour leader. Emily was one of the very best.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Carry your waterproof coat every day, even though we only needed them once. Not sure boots were required, stout shoes would have been fine.
