Cambodia: The Southeast Asian country of Cambodia is filled with contradictions that will make your head spin with excitement. Take a journey of discovery into its ancient, modern and natural worlds where raw beauty and intrigue collide. There are so many sights to uncover which will undoubtedly capture the hearts of all ages of travellers. From its mind-blowing historical sites such as the temples of Angkor, to the frenetic capital of Phnom Penh, something new and inspiring is waiting to pounce around every turn. And children will love the music, dancing and acrobatics at the Cambodian Phare (circus), which has gained worldwide recognition for its fantastic performances.
Finland: Most children love the snow so where better to whisk them away for a Christmas holiday than Finland? In winter, vast landscapes made up of forested wilderness are drenched in deep snow and pine trees are transformed into magical ice sculptures – it truly is a winter wonderland in every way. Oulanka is one of the most picturesque destinations for winter adventures, with activities such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and dogsledding on offer. Based in the heart of the Finnish wilderness, Oulanka National Park is also a great base for heading out into the dark to go in search of the Northern Lights. These elusive phenomena are mostly seen dancing across the Arctic sky between October and March, and while sightings are never guaranteed, it’s still great fun to hunt for them.
Sri Lanka: If you’re looking for a more laid-back holiday at Christmas, Sri Lanka is the perfect destination, but that’s not to say it’s short on exciting adventures. Its ancient cave temples are famous across the world and the lost city fortress of Sigiriya is simply fascinating. In between exploring lush paddy fields by bike and going on exhilarating game drives to witness the country’s wildlife, there’s also plenty of time to unwind with a mocktail, or cocktail for the adults, on one of the tropical beaches along the south coast.
Namibia: Picture the scene: you’re sitting on top of one of the world’s highest sand dunes at Sossusvlei, the sun begins to rise, and the Namib desert landscape laid out in front of you sets aflame with fiery reds and oranges. This is one moment you’ll share with your family that you’ll never forget. As well as quad biking or sandboarding at Swakopmund, we’d also highly recommend a game drive through Etosha National Park to see the African wildlife, including elephants, lions and wildebeest. Namibia’s wilderness is perfect for camping and getting back to nature, and there’s no greater feeling than seeing the night sky illuminated with stars.
Vietnam: Blending fabulous natural wonders with Southeast Asian culture, Vietnam is a colourful collage that all the family can enjoy. Children will find the Cu Chi War Tunnels particularly exciting and it also gives them the chance to learn about the history of Vietnam. Or perhaps they’d prefer kayaking at Halong Bay, where limestone karsts and forested islands rise from the emerald waters. There’s no doubt Vietnam has many surprises up its sleeve, each with their its own fascinating story to tell. In stark contrast to the natural world, Saigon, now known as Ho Chi Minh City, is a hectic yet intoxicating city where you can immerse yourself in the culture.
