Atacama Desert Tours

Running between the Pacific and the Andes, the Atacama Desert in Bolivia is like no place on earth. A surreal lunar landscape – rusty rocks offsetting the white salt pan and mountains rising in the distance – is an epic backdrop for one of the most spellbinding, golden pink sunsets one could ever hope to see. And it’s not all dry desert. There are geysers and salt flats, volcano-topped horizons, lagoons and traditional villages. Spot flamingoes and other birds who call this peaceful, yet very much alive, part of the world home.

Ranking among the most popular Atacama attractions is the Uyuni Salt Flats. Locally known as Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat spans some 4,000 square miles. It has a layer of salt a few meters thick that covers the entire space and contains more than half of the world’s known lithium reserves. There is very little vegetation (giant cacti dominate the flora) or animals (more flamingos feeding on pink algae) here.

San Pedro de Atacama, in the heart of the desert, is the perfect place to drink a pisco sour and take it all in.

Atacama Desert Tours

Bolivia can be challenging with poor infrastructure, unpaved roads and high altitudes, but it is so worth the effort. From the lowlands to the highlands, the scenery shifts, yet it is always impressive and can be like nowhere else. From the historical district in Sucre, the mines in Potosi, the chaos of La Paz and the serenity in Lake Titicaca and especially Salar de Uyuni, it’s just one day of discovery and insight after the other.

Stanley Fine Highlights of Bolivia

Bolivia is an amazing country, well worth visiting and certainly worth putting near the top of the list of places to go. It exceeded our expectations and delivered an wonderful experience; the landscapes, the history, the culture, everything about the trip was just so good. It is such a shame it is only a two week trip, spending an extra day in the Atacama Desert and additional time in La Paz and Sucre would have been wonderful, we would happily have spent three weeks enjoying just the Highlights of Bolivia.
