Amazing country and wildlife!

I absolutely loved Costa Rica, it is such a special place and it makes you appreciate how wonderful our world can be when we look after it! This trip is quite a busy trip and with long drives at times but it is worth it as you get to see so much of this country and its extraordinary diversity of landscapes. Lots of great scenery, wonderful cloud forests, beaches, countryside and amazing wildlife including sloths, hummingbirds, toucans (and numerous other colourful birds), iguanas, monkeys, tree frogs and the most beautiful butterflies I have ever seen. I loved every place we visited but my favourite has to be Tortuguero nature reserve. The boat trips around its waterways spotting wildlife was definitely one of my highlights.

Most Inspirational Moment

Difficult to pick as too many. Spotting wildlife in its natural habitat is wonderful. And the beautiful sunrise on the beach in Tortuguero.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring good waterproofs, camera with a good zoom lens and strong trainers or walking shoes. Also a torch is useful as it can be quite dark at night around the lodges and in Dominical we experienced a few power cuts.

Incredible experience, and a wonderful country!

An incredible journey! Every city had its own charm, from the vibrant streets of Tokyo to the peaceful beauty of Kyoto. The mix of history, culture, and nature was unforgettable, and the food was out of this world. A truly memorable experience, with a brilliant guide to match!

Most Inspirational Moment

There was so many! I loved each place for different reasons so it's hard to pinpoint one. The food was a highlight for me though!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Masa was fantastic, it was his first time leading a group solo but you couldn't tell. He was knowledgable, attentive and understood the groups needs.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Traveling in Japan is all about leaning into the experience and embracing the culture. Learn a few basic Japanese phrases like arigatou (thank you) and sumimasen (excuse me) to help with interactions—it’s appreciated even if you’re not perfect! Try new things, whether it’s tasting unfamiliar foods, soaking in an onsen, or navigating the efficient train system. Be open, respectful, and ready to immerse yourself in this incredible country.

An Incredible and Exciting Trip

My wife has long desired to travel to North Africa to explore her Berber ancestry from her maternal grandfather’s side of the family. I am thrilled that we finally made this amazing trip happen in October and November of 2024.

Most Inspirational Moment

I was truly inspired by the people of Morocco. From the stunning expanse of the Sahara Desert to the pristine beauty of Rabat, the charm of Fez and its medinas, and the magnificent mosques in Casablanca and Marrakech, everywhere we went left a lasting impression. I particularly enjoyed hiking in the High Atlas Mountains and sharing a delightful lunch with Lahcen's family.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Lahcen was an exceptional leader who genuinely cared for everyone. He was particularly attentive to those with special needs and offered his support whenever possible. His professionalism was evident in every aspect of his work. In a group setting, I felt completely secure and confident in Lahcen's abilities.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This trip, in a sense, is an expedition across North Africa and an adventure. There is a lot of walking and hiking which was fine for me, but difficult for my wife. We enjoyed the long bus rides as we got to see more of the countryside and visit small villages. Sophisticated travelers are aware that North Africa is a developing country, so its hotels are not rated the same way as those in the United States or England. My wife and I sought a genuine experience of Moroccan culture and lifestyle. The riads were exceptionally charming. The food was simply fantastic, particularly the bread. We had no complaints whatsoever. We even had the opportunity to experience riding in a taxi cab to and from an event. What can I say, but, our experience in Morocco for 12.5 days was truly remarkable. We will never forget our Morrocan brothers and sisters. We'll be back to visit soon. Thank you, Exodus. I highly recommend Lahcen and this trip.

Go, go, go!!!! The scenery is unbelievable. And if there is any way the Iguazu Falls extension is a MUST.

This is my second trip with Exodus and I could not be more pleased. Already planning my third. The Iguazu Falls extension was over the top fun! The tour leaders that Exodus works with were all exceptional. Pamela with Aqua Grandes in Iguazu. In Patagonia on my lesser hikes, both Mathieus and Jorge were knowledgeable about wildlife – and we saw a lot! Condor (from afar), puma (up close), emus, rheas, guanacos, and plants and flowers and orchids, etc. SUPPORTIVE both literally and figuratively moving at my speed and letting me figure out the terrain.

Most Inspirational Moment

Private hike with my Tour Leader, Pepe Valdivia. I was unable to do the two longest hikes, but Pepe found me my own challenging mountain. Shorter distances to travel, but inclines steep enough for me to feel the mountain.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Pepe Valdivia. BEST MOUNTAIN GUIDE EVER!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go, go, go!!!! But the wind ... my hardest hike was a flat walk to a waterfall at Los Glaciers. Winds were 70-80 kmh. I literally had to hold on to my guide to keep from falling over.

A 'must do' trip that you'll never forget

Exploring the dramatic, captivating and beautiful Patagonian landscape in two short weeks. The weather ranged from windy, cold, to warm and sunny all in the same day. For those of you who are into photography you’re in for a treat.
Did I tell you about the wind?

Most Inspirational Moment

Perito Moreno Glacier is absolutely breathtaking. Torres Del Paine National Park is well worth the climb - we were lucky with the weather

Thoughts on Group Leader

Pepe was a superb leader. He was well organised, personable, flexible and catered for the differing needs of the group members

Advice for Potential Travellers

The costs for meals were more than the trip notes suggest, an evening meal was typically around £30 ($35). Most places, even the most remote shops and restaurants accepted debit and credit cards (always say which type you have before you tap to pay as it may be declined otherwise). Wear insect repellent when walking in Tierra del Fuego National Park (the last day in Ushuaia) as there are plenty of hungry mozzies!

Beautiful country - highly recommend this trip.

A very diverse bunch of people came together to experience the classic ‘cultural triangle’ and much more – but in a more in-depth way. Apart from the lovely people we encountered on our travels, the wildlife was one of my favourite aspects. My absolute favourite moment was when a monkey dropped from a tree onto our ‘snacks’ table and made off with one of the spicy biscuits (good choice!) – chaos/hilarity ensued!

Some of the riding days were tough – I hadn’t got as much training in as I had planned – but the back-up crew were always there to help! A few of the rides (particularly the big one) are on busy roads so would recommend a ‘commuter mask’ if your lungs are sensitive. The fumes from the buses can get a bit much. Although the people travelling on them, hanging out the doors and windows shouting encouragement, almost made up for it!

Most Inspirational Moment

I'd have to agree with other reviews that it was the kids. So happy and engaging - so many high fives - which were sorely needed on the big climbs!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Ruwan was fabulous - extremely knowledgeable and adaptable to the preferences of the group. Lovely, lovely person - as were the rest of the hardworking team!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do the 'optional ride' on the last cycling day. We stopped to see a couple of local industries (making rope from coconut husks; cinnamon) cycled past some beautiful scenery on quiet back roads, and stopped for 'tea' (or coffee for some of us) in a historic home turned guest house - perfect way to end the cycling leg of our trip. We travelled up to Kappalady after the tour (3.5 hours in a taxi) for some kite surfing for a few days. We stayed at MoJo Stay - newly opened (we were their first paying guests!) and a little touch of paradise! Properly off the beaten track in a little village where we were treated to a coconut drink by a local farmer and bought some bracelets off the neighbours kids (very enterprising!). If staying in Negombo before/after your flight - highly recommend Swanee Grand - another absolutely stunning historic home turned hotel!

Fantastic place but make your own arrangements

I booked the Easter Island extension with Exodus at a cost of £1299 plus compulsory single supplement of 345. There was no loyalty discount. Flights from Santiago to EI were not included but if you book your own flights with LATAM it is possible to add the EI return to your ticket for far less than a standalone return ticket which costs around £800.
For the money charged by Exodus you get:- group transfer from Santiago hotel to airport for EI flight (a taxi would cost £25-30)
Picked up from airport and taken to hotel in EI (hotel offers a free pick up service)
3 nights at the Hotel Otai – per notice in reception charge for single room was $190, double room $260 us dollars
Two separate half day tours in a minibus and one full day trip – these cost around £25 for each half day tour and £70 gor full day with lunch but are multi lingual. We had mainly English speaking morning trip but Spanish/English in afternoon and mostly Spanish on day trip. When asked, our Guide suggested that you could have a private guide for around £100 a day – this would be preferable as English speaking and you could visit the various Moai sites at the best times of the day.
Transfer back to EI airport – again offered free by hotel.
Pick up at Santiago airport and taken to hotel – taxi would cost £25-30.
One night B&B at Santiago hotel
Airport transfer from hotel to airport for homeward flight but be warned – Exodus expected us to leave hotel at 05.20 for a flight leaving at 17.00 because they were only offering one transfer and one of our group was flying to Mexico on an early flight. Attempts to contact Exodus in UK went unanswered and local agent only arranged transfer after we had booked a taxi through hotel.
I fully appreciate that Exodus need to make a profit on their tours but there is a difference between making a profit and ripping off loyal customers.
It is much easier for couples to make their own arrangements than solo travellers but you could save almost half what Exodus charge by making your own arrangements and it would be straightforward to pre book tours, hotel etc.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing Moai.

Thoughts on Group Leader

You're on your own!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Read up on Easter Island before you go and make your own arrangements.

Enjoyable trip

An enjoyable trip and you do cover vast distances but for a 13 day trip too much time is spent hanging around in airports.
I note that the itinerary has been tweaked for 2025 so this may help a bit.
One word of warning for solo travellers (apart from the excessive single supplement) is that there are very few group meals. Our guide did not stay in the group hotel at Santiago so for first couple of nights you’re left to your own devices for evening meals. We then flew north to Atacama and again no group meals. Only once we were in the Lake District did guide arrange a group meal one night and then there were group meals all the time in Patagonia.
Scenery in Patagonia was fantastic and we had a couple of decent walks.
Apart from San Pedro de Atacama the hotels were all good although wifi often only in reception area.
Credit and debit cards are accepted everywhere so you don’t need much cash. Wine is cheaper than beer or soft drinks and evening meals no dearer than UK.
Be prepared for a lot of early starts and quite a few breakfast boxes.

Most Inspirational Moment

Sunrise in Patagonia

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a thermos cup and make yourself a coffee at the hotel to take on the bus.

Super Holiday

Trails of New Zealand is an excellent memorable trip. Wonderful scenery, great walks, very comfortable accommodation. Well-thought itinerary, good mix of driving interspersed with walks and other activities.

Most Inspirational Moment

Milford Sound - but be prepared for it to rain, the Abel Tasman coast walk and catamaran trip, kayaking on a tidal lagoon, jet-boating, the Tongariro Crossing and glacier walks.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mel was excellent. Great, efficient, knowledgeable and likeable guide, and also a very good driver.

Advice for Potential Travellers

This is a brilliant trip. If you have time, arrive a day or two early. We had a few days extra in Auckland and Christchurch. We spent about £1000 pp, mostly in cash, but a couple of venues took cards, not cash. There is a small surcharge for cards. Take a small rucksack / overnight bag for Milford. Poles useful for Tongariro Crossing (& optional Ben Lomond on Queenstown day off).

Highlight of Vietnam and Cambodia - Nov 18 - 29, 2024

As per the trip title our 12-day adventure was designed to visit many of the better known locations in both countries including Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An, Ho Chi Min City, Angkor Wat and Phnom Penh. We traveled by a combination of minibus, boat and plane during our time in these two countries which maximized our time to visit the many interesting locales.

Most Inspirational Moment

Most people visiting these two countries will typically mention Ha Long Bay and Angkor Wat as the two most inspiring locations during their trip and our visit was no different. Watching the sunset over all the vessels in Ha Long Bay was beautiful as was the sunrise over the Angkor Wat temple in Cambodia.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We had separate group leaders for each portion of our trip. Phuong Le (Fun) was our tour guide for the Vietnamese portion of our journey and she was an excellent guide. Shehad a great sense of humour and bonded with the group very quickly. She was a wealth of information during our trip and worked hard to help solve all of the myriad issues that cropped up during our time in Vietnam. In Cambodia our guide was Bunthoeun Chheang (Bun). Although our group was only in Cambodia for 4 days, Bun quickly developed a rapport with our group and helped us make the most of our visit. He was very knowledgeable about his country and was able to add personal experiences to his descriptions of everyday life. We were all sorry to say goodbye to him at the end of our trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The only piece of advice I can offer is to make sure you have some Vietnamese currency when you arrive in the country. You can always purchase Vietnamese currency at any of the hundreds of ATMs located throughout all of the cities, but these come with some steep service charges. We arrived with US dollars and our credit cards, both of which worked well in Cambodia. But we found that many places in Vietnam did not accept American money and preferred to paid in Vietnamese Dong.
