Tangier & the Rif Mountains to Marrakech

This is a trip that I had dreamed about. Morraco has so much history, people are friendly and food delicious. Since I visited in 2017 Morraco has changed, its has rubbish everywhere and the stray cats are in such poor condition, it’s heartbreaking also in Marrakech square there was monkeys on chains force to dance. Now a days this is unacceptable .Unfortunately the accommodation was poor except for two places. Chefchaouen and Fez which was lovely. Our tour guide was excellent and spoke excellent English. One of the guides was poor and none of us understood him. The last hotel in Marrakesh was awful, dirty, food was disgusting and you can’t take bottle water into the hotel, you can’t drink the local water, they don’t provide water. We had to hide our water to get into the hotel. Would I go back to Morocco? Probably not.

Most Inspirational Moment

Visiting Chefchaouen in the Rif Mountains, it’s gorgeous

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mbark was very knowledgeable, excellent English and always on time.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you love animals do not visit Morocco.

Exodus for the win!

The sequence of the tour, and the time allocated for each stop was perfect. It was well balanced between culture, history, nature, food, and people.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking into my hotel in Berat. I felt like a princess being able to sleep in a castle.

Edjon M was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic. He was considerate of every participant and made an effort to give each of us individualized attention and care. Ed added several extra stops to give us additional experiences and exposures to history and culture that were not part of the planned itinerary, and I actually think that without all those additions, the trip would not have become such a highlight of my travel experiences. More importantly, our bus driver, Medi H was incredibly acting as an extra leader in addition to giving us a smooth and safe ride along all those crazy roads. Our driver also helped people on rough terrain, cheered for us, hugged us, danced and swam with us, helped set and clear tables at meals, joked with us, and ate and drank with us. I truly feel his enthusiasm made our group of 15 tourists much more cohesive.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Choose Exodus, for the tour organization, the group size, and the staff!

Great walking, Excellent and knowledgeable guide

A great introduction to walking in Madeira with a friendly and knowledgeable guide. All the distances were manageable and the routes were well assessed

Albania - a surprising little gem

A most enjoyable holiday, shared with a lovely group of people – at a far more relaxed place than other Explore holidays I’ve done. We covered a lot of the central and southern part of the country – and it felt like we probably touched upon the majority of the major sites and towns.

Most Inspirational Moment

Berat - I'm glad we stopped for two nights, as it's a really gorgeous place. Plus the beautiful scenery - I was naïve to how mountainous Albania is. Looking through the window whilst being driven through it was spectacular. The one hike included was lovely - more hikes would have been nicer...but I suppose I'll have to do the walking in Albania trip for that! The included family lunch in Dhoksat was wonderful. As was the Berat house visit for coffee, raki and sweets. Great bars and cocktails in Gjirokaster.

Klodi spoke great English and managed to condense huge chucks of historical information into more manageable sized pieces. His knowledge on history and archaeology was phenomenal. What I found unusual was, when we had been shown around a site or museum, we were not given the opportunity to have any time to self explore or go back to look at things or have even 20 minutes or so of "free time". I've never had a guide not allow for this - maybe the itinerary time was simply too tight perhaps? (see below - chilled starts and super long lunches!) Our driver, Medi, to a certain extent almost became part of the group. His driving was excellent, and he smiled throughout. He joined us for a number of visits to museums and churches - even though I don't actually think he had to. He genuinely seemed to enjoy being on the trip - even though he was working!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Prepare for some places to feel a little like a whistle-stop tour (as often is the case with these types of trips where you're trying to pack loads in). The morning starts were leisurely (9am) - which was quite nice. But there were some places where I would have liked to have stayed longer, or seen more and that would have only been achieved if we'd left the hotel earlier in the morning. Or alternatively had a shorter lunch break (which I suspect is impossible in Albania - as service is so slow.....friendly, but slow). Which on the positive side means food is hot and fresh, and allowed for a nice chilled, relaxed holiday where you got to chat with your fellow travellers - I'm just not used to lunch breaks lasting between 90 - 120 minutes. But once you get your head around the relaxed nature of Albanian service and accept it - you'll probably come to quite like it!

Portugal:Walking & Wine

I thoroughly enjoyed our walking tour through the Douro valley and Porto with our guide Carla and her husband Fernando. It was so beautiful and made into a very special experience because of the guides. Carla made you feel like you were part of the Portuguese family because she introduced you to the culture and traditions that are so important to her and her family. They worked together so well and Fernando seemed to be there whenever you needed him!
The walking destinations were remarkable and in spite of the forest fires we encountered (during our time there) Carla worked hard to make the rest of our tour interesting and satisfying. That could not have been easy!

Most Inspirational Moment

I felt very inspired by Carla’s love of her country and its people.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Carla was a warm, giving, intelligent guide who filled our tour with as much information as she possible. Also she was a very responsible and caring for each individual situation. Fernando too added to this with his caring nature and great ability to capture our adventures in pictures. They make a fabulous duo!

Advice for Potential Travellers

I do feel (and I spoke to 1or 2 other tour members) who felt the tour we experienced was more like a level 2 than a 1.

Wonderful trip

The trip to the Douro Valley was excellent in its variety of terrains, wine tastings and walks. But what made the trip were the 2 leaders -Carla and Fernando. Carla not only has a wealth of info to share but she really cared that we all were getting the experience we wanted. She took so much of her personal time for us and totally extended herself to make our time memorable. Fernando was always there when we needed him. He seemed to pop out of the corner at just the right moments-in our walks or when guiding us. He’s a fabulous naturalist and photographer. I can’t speak more highly about the two of them!

Most Inspirational Moment

I loved our walks thru the villages. It was like going back thru time. Also the trip to the beekeepers’ house was stunning!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Amazing! See above

Advice for Potential Travellers

There was a good amount of walking. A few places were a tad more strenuous which made the walks more fun. The hotel in Régua could have been better. It was very dated. Tho I t has a wonderful location
