Top 5 Highlights of Mexico Tours

Day of the Dead Festival: This unusual festival is a traditional holiday in Mexico that each year, at the start of November, celebrates the passing of loved ones. Mexicans believe it is better to celebrate than mourn and they take to the streets with live music and dancing. As you learn about the history of the festival, meet with a local family and sample traditional Oaxaca dishes, you’ll get a fascinating insight into the culture of Mexico. Immerse yourself in the parade through the streets and later in the evening visit a cemetery where locals adorn the graves of their lost loved ones.

Mexico City Old Town: At the beating heart of Mexico City is the historic Old Town, home to the main square and cathedral. The buildings here are fascinating and beautiful and tell of the country’s Aztec heritage. The Zócalo is one of the largest plazas in the world and was a significant meeting place for the Aztecs. Explore historical landmarks, Art Nouveau architecture and the famous Museum Mural of Diego Rivera. As well as flaunting such impressive buildings, the Old Town is buzzing with world-class restaurants and street food stalls selling traditional taquerías.

San Cristobal: Set against a backdrop of pine forests and highland valleys, San Cristobal is a beautiful colonial city. Meandering cobbled streets and narrow alleyways leading to light-filled plazas are lined with vibrant cafes and whitewashed houses topped with red roofs. As you wander through the old colonial streets, you’ll find yourself captivated by San Cristobal’s charms. Be sure to browse the local stalls that are filled with handicrafts made by the indigenous Tzotzil people.

Chichen Itza: The most famous of the Mayan cities, Chichen Itza is an intriguing archaeological site that was named as one of the New Seven Wonders of the world in 2007. The site is home to extraordinary Mayan ruins and is made up of Old Chichen and Chichen Itza. There are 26 ruins in total with Chichen Itza Pyramid being the most spectacular. The Temple of the Warriors, El Caracol and Mayan Ball Game are also of great importance.

Palenque Ruins: Equally as important as Chichen Itza, Palenque Ruins rise up from a dense jungle sprawled across the low-lying hills. The site forms a part of the Parque Nacional Palenque and has one of the most beautiful settings. As you explore, you’ll be in awe of the well-preserved temples, pyramids and sanctuaries that exhibit the impressive skills of the Mayans.
