CYCLING VIETNAM

A wonderful holiday with a great group of people in a fascinating country. We had the chance to see local life close to and were warmly greeted wherever we went.

Most Inspirational Moment

The long descent (35km) from the top of a very wet and misty mountain beyond Dalat down to the warm and sunny valley below, freewheeling most of the way.The 10k long uphill climb to the top of the Hai Van Pass, a big challenge and a real sense of achievement to make it to the top.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Long Le was superb; he had a wonderful sense of humour, and a great grasp of English idiom. Nothing was too much trouble for him, everything went very smoothly and he was able to change plans if necessary with no problems. He was a great ambassador for both the Company and the Country and was always delighted to share information and to "educate us"

Advice for Potential Travellers

A gel saddle cover or your own saddle is vital to the enjoyment of the holiday, padded shorts are pretty useful too. Some of the rides are quite long, get a bit fit before you go and you will enjoy it more. Having said that, anyone who couldn't manage some of the longer climbing sections was welcome to ride up in the bus: there was no pressure to carry on if you couldn't manage it. Take Immodium instants!!!!

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: KVITAVATN

Very well organised, friendly holiday. Excellent staff good accommodation. This was our second time on this holiday, still more to do next time too.

Most Inspirational Moment

I found the staff to be knowledgable and dynamic as they adapted to difficult weather conditions.

Thoughts on Group Leader

The holiday was well lead, a real team effort from all the staff.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Check the weather reports, take advantage of everything on offer.

MOUNTAINS & VILLAGES OF EVIA

This was a really lovely break away. The walking (B grade week) was not particularly challenging, nor were the days long, but the scenery, food and company were excellent!

Most Inspirational Moment

Having the opportunity to try new food types! I enjoyed the shared starters where you could have little tasters of something different. In fact, the starters were more than enough, although the mains were very tasty we had all eaten too much at the start of the meal!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Thanos was very passionate about the area and its history and traditions. We learnt a lot from him about the island. He was supportive and an inspirational.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Travelling in February, you should be prepared for a variety of weather. It was a bit like England in April, with all weather types in one day!  We varied between cool weather - even snow on a couple of days, to warm sunshine - t-shirt weather!!

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - RONGAI ROUTE

I had a slightly different experience to most on the holiday- including about 3ft of fresh snow on summit night and having two companions be stretchered off the mountain! So my view is probably slightly jaded… but still valid!

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing a rainbow after our aclimatising walk at Mawenzi; Seeing the sun rise on summit night (sadly not on the summit due to the snow slowing the pace!)

Thoughts on Group Leader

Not a great deal, unfortunately. The assistant guides were all fantastic but our lead guide- and our hotel contact- were both very poor. The lead guide only led us on summit night and was far from encouraging. We'd not even reached Gillman's Point (which we did) when he said that our pace meant it would take to long to go on to Uhuru. Whilst some members of the group were struggling, younger ones werent and we felt there were enough guides to have split us up. Plus, he was setting the pace! Additionally, he wanted money for the very sick people to be stretchered off the mountain. I gave this to him for one of the travellers only to find he then asked her for more money later- disgusting considering how ill she was, that he'd already been paid and that the park fees include evacuation costs (confirmed by exodus on my return). Similarly, the hotel contact essentially abandoned us with two very sick people, having told us they were 'fine'. Our experience appears in the minority. On the plane back, a companion sat with a man who had done the same climb with AWC the night before and his experience sounds a world apart. For example, when we arrived at the gates we were handed our certificates in a brown envelop without our names on on anything; his group had them all laminated and a bit of a presentation ceremony was held for them. Our lead guide seemed more keen to go and have a drink than do that and certainly couldn't be deemed 'encouraging' at all. Both of these matters will be followed up separately with Exodus.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Invest in equipment you can trust! Even though the weather on summit night was horrendous, I knew that I had gear that I totally trusted. I bought a Rab down jacket, as recommended on one of these reviews, and it was fantastic. Similarly, I'd been out walking in torrential rain before I went to test out my waterproofs and knew they'd do a good job.I really feel the cold so found having two sets of merino wool thermals excellent- I was toasty! However, none of this is cheap. If this is your first time, start spreading the cost and buying something each month. The month before I went, I felt I was haemorraghing money as I had so much to buy! But it is an investment and worth every penny when you're on the mountain! Also, have energy tablets. Altitude sickness is not like a mild hangover but more like 'i'm never drinking again' hangover. I couldn't face any food when I got hit so having something you can just swallow to keep the energy levels up would have helped! Finally, be confident. I wish, in hindsight, that we'd challenged our lead guide and made him split the group. As it was, you have to have so much trust in them that you assume they know best. This is bound to be true for most of the time but if they are unwilling to support and encourage you to the top, press for it- you've paid a lot of money to not get to the top due to a negative attitude from your guide!

PETRA & WADI RUM TREK

It was a great holiday in a fantastic country.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking down to Petra early in the morning before the tourists and walking around the Wadi Rum as the sun comes up.

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was enthusiastic and enjoyed bringing everyone into the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Remember that at this time of year it can be not only cold but wet as well. We even had snow and frost. You will also need to bring more cash to pay the tips.

CYCLING VIETNAM

Thoroughly enjoyable. Still thinking about it now after a week back. I am a committed cyclist and others on the trip probably were not enthusiasts but it didn’t matter. We all mixed well and the mixture of swimming, site-seeing and kayaking was great.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing the people and just a different way of life. How hard they seemed to work in the cities and for not very much

Thoughts on Group Leader

Long Le is a real gem and such an enthusiast

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just soak it all up and you will manage the cycling so long as you are reasonably fit

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: DOBBIACO

Instruction, ski-tours and general coordination and atmosphere of the holiday were all great. The leaders, the group and the weather were all fantastic, so overall it was a brilliant holiday again.  The hotel however was a little tired.

Most Inspirational Moment

The weather was very sunny, and the snow was fast retreating.  However the leaders were able to ensure we made the most of the conditions.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Both Group Leaders, David and Albert, were great and ensured everyone made progress and had a great holiday.

DISCOVER SRI LANKA

This was the best trip I have done with any travel company in the 10 years I have been travelling. The trip encompassed a fair amount of varied activities from climbing fortresses to rafting in the jungle during our time in Srilanka but also had some chill out time factored in.

Most Inspirational Moment

There were quite a few highlights -for me climbing Sirigiya Rock Fortress and seeing the amazing unspoilt views all around - well worth the climb. I really also enjoyed the cycle ride in Giritale where village life continues at a leisurely place where we had one of the best lunch buffets meal of the trip. The walk in Horton Plains to See World's End - that was pretty spectacular sight when the clouds lifted like magic and you could see the very large drop!I was actually a bit speechless with the sheer beauty of the place ! I really enjoyed the village games we played in the middle of a banana plantation. It was very fun but boy was Roshan competitive!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Roshan - he is an exceptionally great leader. He was always cheerful and had a quotation or cliche for every occasion! He made the trip from a very good one to an exceptional one with his banter. He always gave clear and concise information as well as mini history lessons in manageable portions. He was good in getting everyone involved in  the village games as well as in the cricket matches.Roshan works hard but plays cricket harder!

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would recommend the flight out with Emirates as you essentially can gain half a day on the beach on arrival. I flew from Manchester so got to the hotel at 10.30am whereas the group flight gets in about 5.30pm. The half a day enabled me to get over the jet lag  quicker and enjoy the ocean! Plus you get 30kg luggage allowance so if you don't have to worry if you end up buying lots of pressies like tea, tea and more tea !

ANNAPURNA SANCTUARY

Challenging enough for me. Amazing mountain backdrop walking through terraces and tiny villages, with the most excellent guides going – I cant praise their input too much – just a superb experience and this trip has helped my understanding of Nepal and its people.

Most Inspirational Moment

The total kindness, generosity and respect that the guides and people we met showed to us and to each other.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fantastic, best ever, capable in an emergency and totally trustworthy.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Prepare properly for the trip and keep luggage to a minimum, its unfair for the porters to be weighed down with unnecessary stuff.

DISCOVER SRI LANKA

An amazing and varied trip that I would definitely recommend.

Most Inspirational Moment

I loved the elephant ride - I would advise everyone to take the opportunity to ride on the head of the elephant as that is brilliant fun. Make sure you buy bananas to feed it while you are on there! The bike ride was great - a fabulous opportunity to see the non-touristy side of the country and the lunch was the best of the whole trip.I also loved the traditional Sri Lankan games we played at the farm - although I'm still not sure if they really were traditional games or if Roshan just wanted to get us doing silly things so he could laugh at us

Thoughts on Group Leader

Roshan was great. This was his 177th trip but he still seemed very enthusiastic and proud of his country. His depth of knowledge was amazing and he gave a great insight into both the history and the current situation in the country. He was great fun but at the same time very organised and professional. I will warn future travellers - he is very competitive at cricket!

Advice for Potential Travellers

I did Adam's Peak which I am glad to have done as it was an interesting experience climbing up with all the pilgrims. I was very disappointed at the top though as it is small, built up and very crowded so I didn't get to see much of the famous sunrise so beware this is the case, but it is still worth doing. You also do need to be fit to do it as it takes at least 3 hours to climb up and there are over 5,200 steps. I am fairly fit but my legs were still very very sore for the next 2 days.
