Cycling Vietnam

An excellent trip, spoiled by too many motorbikes on the roads over the Chinese New Year. Cycling round the back roads of Hoi An. We stayed in some really nice places and had a brilliant leader.

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling around the back roads of Hoi An.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Long Le could not have done better. Probably the best Exodus leader I have had. He was hard working, conscientious, considerate, interesting and fun!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Avoid Chinese New Year. Do this trip soon before the motorbikes get too much to deal with and maybe turn into cars.

Cycling Vietnam

A fantastic 2 week cycling trip seeing all the usual tourist sights and the not so usual sights of Vietnam. We were in the hands of an exceptional tour guide called Long ,who made sure we were well informed and had every chance to experience the sights, culture and food of Vietnam .

Most Inspirational Moment

Realising I could manage cycling up the Hai Van pass!

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was the best tour guide I have come across in all of our many similar trips. The whole group felt the same. He made the Holliday the success that it was. He was very professional, nothing was too much bother, he was very informative and his grasp of English was very good such that he was able to joke with us all. He was very efficient and hearded us all through Vietnam without any incidents which is a major feat!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Relax and enjoy an extremely well organised trip

Cycling Vietnam, departing 0 7.02.2016

A thoroughly enjoyable 2 weeks. We had 8 days cycling on great bikes and with the scenery getting more spectacular as days went on we were treated to an amazing number of different experiences. Our accommodation was of a high standard and lunches and snacks were always awaiting us at the right times. We were a big group (18) but as we all got on well and our leader had great support from his assistant guide and the bus drivers the large number was no problem. At least one supporter was there to guide us/ stop traffic at every junction.

Most Inspirational Moment

Our optional morning cycle on our rest day in Hoi An when we followed Truong Long (our leader) along narrow paths around farm fields, stopping regularly to be shown different plants, crops, snail eggs, water buffalo etc and then later that morning when he took us to visit the lovely 92 year old farmer and his wife.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader was fabulous. He was always had things sorted way before we needed them, he had an amazing knowledge of Vietmanese countryside & history and he spoke brilliant English. His great sense of humour meant that I listened to his facts & stories and so enjoyed his telling of them that I have remembered way more than I would normally do. He was also very considerate to all the groups different needs & interests.. A truly kind and much admired man who never rested from making sure that we all had everything we needed or would add to our experience. Even the overnight train journey was made fun by his timing of producing beer & wine to go with our pizzas.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure that you don't go to Vietnam over the Tete holiday. All our group had a wonderful time and fortunately none of us had an accident but given how busy the roads were we were very lucky. Most of our cycling was done on quieter roads but there were some very near misses when we were on the bus. (Our driver was an exception. He was great) We watched too many busses going too fast on the wrong side of the road. Vietnam was always going to be busy with motorbikes but because of the holiday there were thousands everywhere. It wasn't even safe to stand by a market stall.

We would like to thank Gillian for her comments and we were delighted to read of the enjoyable experiences she had. We were, however, disappointed to read that she felt unsafe at times; our health and safety team are looking into the safety issues Gillian raises regarding travel at this time of year, and we will be reassessing the dates next year to reflect this.

Cycling Vietnam Hochimin to Hanoi

Hi thanks for a great holiday- one much more organized than I usually take, but equally as good as a personal trip! We were treated royally- met at the airport despite being over 3 hours late, had exceptional accommodation far exceeding my expectation, ate wonderful food, enjoyed a perfect staff, both Chi the guide and ” the boys” who fixed the bikes, rode at the end for stragglers and met us with secret recipe juice and fruit after every 10 to 15 km. I would recommend it to anyone. Thanks again. Jennifer

Most Inspirational Moment

No inspiration just a good, informative and fun time

Thoughts on Group Leader

Chi was a treat! He has a quirky sense of humour and withstood all our idiosyncrasies as you would expect with such a diverse group with a smile and patience. He told us lots of information about Vietnam without being wordy or prejudiced. A very nice man

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take this trip but don't expect to loose weight even though you will cycle long distances. The food is too good!

Cycling in Vietnam

A fabulous trip and a great way to explore the length of Vietnam in 2 weeks with its varied countryside, friendly people and great food. I feel we really saw a lot of Vietnam and cycling in the countryside allows you to experience the place at a different pace. The staff on our trip were excellent. The only downside was the amount of bus time we had – some longer bus journeys which are unavoidable given the size of the country!

Most Inspirational Moment

There were many great moments - mine might have been reaching the top of Hai Van Pass.

Thoughts on Group Leader

I couldn't have asked for a better leader. Lam was truly excellent - friendly, always happy and willing to help you and well organised.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Try and extend your trip a day either side to have time in Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi. Don't worry about bringing snacks - there are loads provided (just bring a water bottle!) You can also get laundry done in Nha Trang and Hoi An (rest days) so you can pack lighter.

cycling in Vietnam

An excellent holiday with a good blend of cycling, relaxing and covering much of the length of Vietnam. The leader, Thenth went above and beyond his duties and should certainly be considered for the leadership awards. very efficient, friendly, caring, knowledgeable, kept his own team together well and introduced us to some great local places to eat. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys cycling and is comfortable pedalling for 50 miles. Lovely group of people we had too, mixed ages, who mixed well.

Most Inspirational Moment

Hard one to answer - maybe seeing a very strange creature when snorkelling - yet to be identified. also the children, as we cycled through villages, jumping up and down, shouting Hello, sin chao....so friendly walking into a hotel, in smelly cycling clothes, where a wedding reception was going on and we had to pass beside the greeting party, ....not what they had planned, I'm sure. a cooking class in Hoi Ann very early morning, standing alone on the deck of the boat on Halong Bay....and the food on the boat

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent - see above Also to be commended are the mechanic, Su, for his skills, his patience and support as back rider and his maintenance of the bikes. Also for their friendliness the bus driver and the van driver, who stood patiently at intersections to make sure that no-one got lost.......and provided great, regular drinks and snacks.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring a proper water bottle to fit bike bottle holders - they aren't easy to source over there. when it rains....the rain is warm, so you don't really need to put a waterproof on. the hired bikes were great - don't bother taking your own when crossing the roads....its 1.2..3 and walk. Don't stop - they really don't want to kill you. Its just a different code of behaviour. a bottle of sloe gin went down very well on the overnight train! - shared, of course

Cycling Vietnam

A most enjoyable holiday marred only by the essential long bus journeys

Most Inspirational Moment

It was all memorable, each day provided a new experience

Thoughts on Group Leader

He was awesome, so helpful, patient and knowledgeable

Advice for Potential Travellers

Pack frugally and pack your first days riding clothing in your hand luggage as it is not uncommon for hold luggage to go astray for a while. Not the fault of Exodus.

Vietnam

A really well planned, fun trip, headed by a brilliant group leader.
I loved Vietnam, the country and all the people I met.

Most Inspirational Moment

Really enjoyed the overnight train journey to Ha Noi

Thoughts on Group Leader

The group leader (Long Le) was fantastic, he worked so hard (along with the rest of the team) in organising, planning and executing each days activities, always with fun and good humour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just book it - you will love the holiday

Cycling Vietnam

Absolutely brilliant trip! Beautiful countryside, friendly people, delicious food, lovely hotels, good bikes with excellent technical support and a really great group of people.

Most Inspirational Moment

Halong Bay, where we visited the limestone caves and watched the sun set over the bay from the deck of the boat where we spent the night.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Chi was excellent. He was very knowledgeable, really friendly and had everything very well planned. His ability to guide us safely across a street full of motorbikes and scooters was amazing.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't wear a cold chain round your neck or carry valuables in a shoulder bag or backpack in Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi as snatch-and-grab from motorbikes and pickpocketing is rife. Do take the opportunity to see the water puppet show in Hanoi. The Museum of Fine Arts in Hanoi is worth a visit if you have free time before you fly.

Vietnam-laugh your way across Vietnam with Danh!

Well, where do you start? Danh (‘Jan’) is the most happy, knowledgeable and friendly person you will meet. As a guide you will never surpass him. We had such a brilliant time with slick organisation making travelling in a hot climate so enjoyable. Cycling, culture, history and great food are wrapped into this brilliant 2 week trip that you cannot fail to enjoy it. We did the Atlas descent last autumn and whilst harder technically the higher temperatures in Vietnam make it tougher than the level 3 would suggest!
We traveled as family of 4 with 2 teenage girls (17/19) and had very different expectations of a holiday, but ‘Jan’s’ personality and abilities engaged everyone on all levels.
If Exodus would like a small tip-stick some semi-slick tyres on the bikes as there was no need at all for knobbly MTB ones, the roughest terrain was a sandy road.

Most Inspirational Moment

Many but 'kayaking'( and swimming!!) in the lagoon within one of the islands in Halong Bay. On a boat on the river at night with floating candles In Hoi Ann.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Exemplary-an awesome asset to Exodus!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Its hot. If you have a favorite saddle take it!! The hotels were all brilliant , a very high standard but breakfasts are weak unless you like pork noodle soup! No need to take any snacks.
