Vietnam is Wonderful!

A fantastic opportunity to meet and travel with like minded souls through a beautiful country, of constantly changing scenery. The locals were amazingly happy and friendly despite many living hard, hand to mouth lives. The history of the war was brought to life by visiting the tunnels, and put in perspective by the marvellous tour guide Lingh.

Most Inspirational Moment

Being welcomed into the local way of life up close and personal. And Han long bay was just stunning!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Lingh was absolutely fantastic! Everything was brilliantly organised. Nothing was too much trouble - from retrieving forgotten shampoo from previous hotel, checking each room after we had left and checked ourselves, sorting taxis, where best to buy specific gifts and often going himself to ensure best deals, advise on when and how to barter, selecting amazing lunch venues, ensuring a glass supplied with cans of drink, I could go on...... Lingh was entertaining when informing us about Vietnam, it's people, culture, ways of life, and he was very knowledgeable on a huge variety of topics - war, religion, regional work, crops, education..... He got the perfect balance between educating us and leaving us to soak up the atmosphere or sleep! Lingh ensured we understood what was planned each day, how far we would cycle, how hilly, when we would stop for breaks, eat, so we could decide whether to cycle or bus a stage, although we all chose to cycle as he inspired us with his just do it positive attitude. Whilst our group was a very friendly supportive bunch of people, Lingh was certainly the glue that stuck us all together in the background or leading from the front as appropriate. He made a great holiday into a fantastic one!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do some training for a couple of months beforehand if not a cyclist already. There are a couple of days with stages that are quite hilly and challenging. Other days maybe flat, but up to 100 km, in heat. So a good general fitness, bum sore savy I.e.take your own seat if familiar and liked, and a good pair of padded, lightweight, cycling shorts is very useful.. Cream up! Mosquitos not a major problem if sprayed up. Rehydration tabs worked for me cos boy do you sweat! Although salty snacks, fluid and fruit is plentiful at each break! Don't need own snacks, water bottle holder. Do need cycle bag to carry camera, own water bottle. Also ruck sack bag to leave on bus so can have creams, money, change of clothes.....

excellent vietnam cycling trip

Our leader, Lam was a star. Great trip from start to finish. Hotels better than we expected and to eat excelkent food where the locals ear, was a real highlight. Cycling was not too onerous and reasonably fit people would be fine including us 60+ year old.

Most Inspirational Moment

Cycling up and over the high van pass. 10k straight up. Lam inspired me to complete it.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Lam was a star. Always there Nd solved any problems we had.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Practise cycling before you go and get your rear end used to a saddle for a couple hours at active. ..

Cycling Vietnam

What a fantastic trip and a great way to get a taste of Vietnam whilst enjoying a cycling and sightseeing holiday

Most Inspirational Moment

I don't think I've ever said hello so many times, the children would all run out and shout hello, wave and put their hands out to slap yours as you cycle past, great fun! Another highlight was the boat and Halong Bay, it coincided with my birthday, the weather was clear and we had the boat just for our group, food was fabulous and they even carved me a "happy birthday" melon .... amazing.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Chi was an excellent group leader, nothing phased him and he had a permanent smile on his face. His English was excellent and his knowledge of Vietnam was superb. He was very tolerant and didn't mind how many times we asked "is it flat?"

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for the heat and humidity. It's easy to get laundry done on a several occasions, so you don't need too much cycle gear.

Cycling Vietnam

Vietnam is a fantastic country.
Exploring by bike is a great way to be immersed in the sights, smells, atmosphere of a new culture.

Most Inspirational Moment

Swimming in a cove at Halong bay and being woken by the most dramatic thunderstorm that reverberated around the islands.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We couldn't have asked for more from a group leader. Danh was organised with an exceptional attention to detail. His knowledge of his country was outstanding, with an endless enthusiasm and ability to impart this. As a group we felt thoroughly looked after. This was helped by a fantastic bike support team, who provided us with an abundance of smiles and snacks. Danh's intimate knowledge of his country brought us to places that we would never have found alone. Great family restaurants and an egg coffee being examples of this.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Quality snacks provided whilst riding, you really don't need to bring your own. Camelbak not necessary, as stops are frequent and if you go in the summer it really is too hot to wear one. If like me your knowledge of Vietnam is somewhat sparse, it would be a good idea to do some research before you go so that you have some context in which to put the abundance of information that will be offered to you!

Cycling Vietnam

This is an excellent holiday with great variety! Good cycling coupled with sightseeing a really interesting country and history, excellent food and an outstanding guide!

Most Inspirational Moment

Looking around Hoi An and Hue at the amazing Vietnamese history

Thoughts on Group Leader

Lam, the Group leader was outstanding - excellent leadership, amazing retsaurants, historical and cultural insight and a very calm and balanced approach to all issues

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you do some training before you come - the cycling is not too difficult but the 36 deg C temperatures make it tough for anyone who is not fit!

Vietnam Cycling Holiday July 26 - August 8

A wonderful experience with 18 like minded and positive people.

Most Inspirational Moment

Everyday was inspirational but one of the most memorable moments was time trialling for 15kilometres out of Dalat with our leader. We averaged on Mountain Bikes 28-30klm Per hour, had a good laugh at the end and drank as much water as we could pour down our throats, it was 34 deg celsius! Every pit stop we had an amazing amount of fruit and munchies to consume, I looked forward to this everyday. Another memorable moment was riding our bikes through the streets of Dalat with all the mopeds, taxi's, buses and trucks, it is not dangerous at all and every road user is courteous.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Chi was brilliant, lots of fun, a great Bike rider, very organised and knowledgeable on anything and everything we asked of him. The bus driver and mechanics were also exceptional, they kept everyone safe and looked after us and the bikes extremely well.

Advice for Potential Travellers

We brought our own bikes and the downside to this was the train Journey from Hue to Hanoi. The bikes travelled with us in the cabin as they do not have a freight car attached. My wife and I needed to share a bunk and the bikes were placed on the one above. Unfortunately it did not end there, we then had to speak to the train official and he reminded us that the bikes should not be on the train and we will potentially be fined for oversized luggage in Hanoi. When arriving in Hanoi our bikes were grabbed and placed on a trolley for transportation by platform officials, they charged us 150.000 dong to do this, naturally I thought this was the fine so said nothing and paid the money. When clearing the train station another official stopped us and demanded another 150,000 dong for oversized luggage. Fortunately our guide Chi stepped in and negotiated this down to 75000 dong. Exodus you need to sort this out for future travellers with bikes, it was a very unpleasant experience.

Reply from Exodus

We would like to thank Jason for his review, although we were sorry to learn of his experience on the train; unfortunately it appears that there may have been a miscommunication as his tour leader, Chi, has explained that there should have been space under some of the beds for the bikes to be stored. We regret, however, that this led to an understandably uncomfortable night and for the disappointment caused.

Megan Devenish – Trip Manager for Vietnam

Cycling Vietnam - July 18th 2015

This was a very diverse holiday, with a great group of people and a well organised guide and support team. Fantastic food – seafood like you have never seen before, and beer the equivalent of 35p – £1.00.

Most Inspirational Moment

The 10 km climb up the mountain on day 8 was a killer but so exhilarting when reaching the top without stopping. Hearing the other side of the story with regards the Vietnam war. Learning a bit about the different Kings who ruled over the years in Vietnam and what they did or didn't do for the country. Vietnam, neither the war or culture, was a subject I covered at school/univerisyt etc so was quite an informative holiday.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Extremely well orgnaised. Nothing was any bother. The group was well looked after. Danh was exceptional when finding and/or recommening places to eat and drink. The support team also was very well organised when it came to drink stops and also at busy junctions, stopping the traffic or making sure we navigated around busy streets safely.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you are confident cycling in traffic - if necessary get in touch with your local council sustainable transport dept and find out about an assertive cycling course. The traffic in some of the towns is very busy and chaotic - if you are a nervous cyclist then this could make you stressed. Although you have the option of going on the bus and not cycling, the whole experience of cycling on the roads in Vietnam is all part of the experience and you don't want to miss it.

Cycle Vietnam

Overall and excellent trip and good value for money. Everything is laid on and very well organised.

Most Inspirational Moment

The 30k downhill!

Thoughts on Group Leader

A lovely guy who was helpful and knowledgeable. He never stopped laughing which is a good thing and had an adorable personality but not quite sure if that was appropriate to laugh when my bag was stolen from a hotel!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Vietnam is a lovely country but not great for vegetarians. In some places you're limited to rice. Considering it's history, it's not surprising to know that it's quite undeveloped in terms of the infrastructure. The roads are very bumpy, especially when travelling on the bus. You get jostled a lot in Vietnam, especially in the cities. However, your money will go a long way in Vietnam!!

Vietnam Cycling

Working up a sweat is a great way to bond with a group of complete strangers of varied fitness levels and life stories. By day 14 you know who you will endeavour to keep contact with, and those you don’t have still contributed positively to your whole experience and provided lively holiday tales.

Most Inspirational Moment

A fresh understanding of a different culture was a highlight as well as the mental and physical challenge of the cycling, which I am new to.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Lam was a star. Very organised and always cheerfully encouraging. He also had great support team who worked hard and made every step easy.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Even though the trip is described as moderate, you will enjoy it more if you do a bit of training. I cycled for an hour, including hills, 3 days a week for a month before departure and that was a big help. Seasonal temperatures play a big part in energy levels also. Next trip will definitely be in spring or autumn. The 10km hill climb on day 10 was a killer in July heat. Check with Exodus contacts regarding equipment needed. We did not need sleeping sheets or torches but a little handle bar bag would have been useful for camera, money etc, rather than the heat of a backpack.

Holiday of a lifetime

From Saigon to Halong Bay we experienced Vietnam and its people and cuisine at close quarters. We felt that if we had done the trip without cycling we would not have seen the real Vietnam. It was fantastic from start to finish, Lam our guide went above and beyond expectations and is a credit to this company.

Most Inspirational Moment

The children in local villages coming out shouting hello hello.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We met a stranger who ended up being a friend, his attention to detail was first class and his organisation was second to none.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get fit before you go and take a camel back it is a must.
