A WEEK IN JORDAN

An excellent holiday, you see as much as you can of Jordan in 1 week.

Most Inspirational Moment

Petra of course, the main reason for going, we get 2 whole days to explore which is plently of time.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very good.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Dont worry about the camping night, mattresses are very comfortable. Blankets looked clean and warm, but I did use my own sleepng bag.Snorkelling from the Royal Diving club in Aqaba is excellent, in case you dont fancy the optional boat trip.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

Very enjoyable week with the many highlights of this interesting country.

Most Inspirational Moment

I think seeing the Treasury at Petra for the first time and just taking it all in!  Petra by night is also very beautiful and gives you a different insight.  The climb to the monastery was tough but worth it!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sami was very helpful and he knew a lot about his country especially with the perspective that he had lived outside of it also.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for hot days but cold nights and also rain in Amman!

A WEEK IN JORDAN

Fantastic way to see the sights of Jordan! A great mixture of activities and adventures to suit any level of fitness! A must for all who would like a taste of everything Jordan has to offer!

Most Inspirational Moment

Petra is definitely the highlight of this trip, and with two full days there, there is plenty of time to explore its vastness and pure beauty! I can tell you how amazing it is, how mind-blowingly fantastic it is, how you will be seduced by its beauty and wonder...but nothing will prepare you for quite how perfect it actually is. There is so much to see, so much to learn and such an adventure to have there!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader Sami had a fantastic wealth of knowledge about the entirety of Jordan. It was amazing at quite how much information he knows without any prompts or notes! He also kept us entertained with his 'jokes' and funny tales!

Advice for Potential Travellers

For all those on their first adventure like I was, remember to take a zip-up fleece and some light long trousers. I took one pair of 3/4 length trousers, and a long cardigan, which were fine, but always a good idea to have a backup pair, and the fleece for walking up at the High Place in Petra, if a little windy! You do not need to take too much with you in your case! I took about 5 capped sleeve tops and just washed them in the sink of the hotels as I went along...they dry by the morning if you hang them up!Take a waterproof camera for the boat trip in Aqaba too! I was so glad I did!

A WEEK IN JORDAN

A wonderful week in an amazing country, with good company!  Although Petra was what inspired me to go in the first place, Jordan has so much more to offer – Wadi Rum, the amazing Roman ruins of Jaresh (which I did not know existed), floating in the Dead Sea, snorkelling in the Red Sea, friendly people, good food (on the whole) and a safe atmosphere.

Most Inspirational Moment

That first famous magical view of Petra after the walk through the Siq is so well known, but it literally moved me to tears!  Petra lived up to its promise and more.  I had not realised how large it was, and when you got away from the easily accessed bits we almost had it to ourselves.  The rock colours and the geology are  as wonderful as the manmade structures.  A unique landscape.Wadi Rum was also amazing.  I had not realised how beautiful the desert could be, and the camel ride was wonderful.  It made one feel more at home in the landscape somehow.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sami was quite a character and did his best to inform us about his country its history and the region in all its complexity. We asked a lot more than the "10 questions each", but he answered them all with a lot of patience & humour,  although sometimes the answers were somewhat unnerving!  He gave us his time and energy generously, and tried to make things more interesting, for instance, by taking us up the back paths to the Place of Sacrifice in Petra, where we could look down on it all, and taking us to local restaurants

Advice for Potential Travellers

Although this was classed as leisurely/moderate, we did not have much time to stand and stare!  We were on the go all the time as there was a lot to pack in in a short time to see everything.  I found this quite tiring, especially if I had not slept well, but most days you can take a short nap to recuperate when you get to the hotel, before dinner. Physically, there is usually a choice about how far you climb and walk, and some activities are extras, but as you are there, you want to do them all, and it is worth the effort.  You just have to take your time and pace yourself.  Take layers if you go when we did (March).  We were lucky with the weather and had mild nights and warm days, but when we left it was quite cold and raining and the weather forecast was not so good for the following week.   If you like a drink in the evening, take some duty free from the UK as most places we stayed and ate in were either alcohol free or drinks were very expensive.  You can get fruit juices everywhere to mix with your favourite tipple!

A WEEK IN JORDAN

A fantastic trip covering the "must see’s" of Jordan. The tour was very well organised with good accommodation and trasport. The Jordanian people were very friendly and welcoming and it felt perfectly safe. I would definintely travel with Exodus again and very much recommend this trip to anyone especially if you are looking to "experience" Petra, rather than just tick it off a list.

Most Inspirational Moment

Too many to pick just one.....but walking the back way into Petra to the High Sacrifice (stopping on route for baklava kindly offered by our leader) was a privilege. We then spent time just sat looking over Petra, enjoying the moment. More special moments were spent in Petra at the Monument, drinking mint tea at one of the several view points (you cant miss the big "view" signs) and being shown a bedouin cave. And not forgetting falling asleep under the stars in Wadi Rum

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sami was knowledgeable, interesting and all done with a lot of humour! He encouraged us to ask questions (dont be fooled by the "10 questions per day" limit) and was happy to share from his personal experiences. He was always happy to support the group with our requests and was very keen on ensuring we got the best service possible.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take layers if travelling out of summer - temperatures can vary and can be cold at night, although we were lucky to have very warm days and mild evenings. A thin scarf is great for protecting your head and shoulders from the sun (in spring/autumn, a hat would definitely be needed in summer), or protecting your face from the wind and sand/dust if necessary. Sturdy trainers or lightweight walking shoes are recommended for Petra. At minimum take a sleep sheet for Wadi Rum - blankets are provided if you don't have a sleeping bag but its personal preference (and if going in colder times it might be very welcome). Also take baby wipes and a torch. Sleep outside but use insect repellent, and ear plugs (even if you sleep in the tents you can't block out your fellow travellers snoring!)If you are a diver take your diving license as there should be opportunity to dive if you wish (we got to dive from the snorkelling trip which was a bonus). Don't expect the worlds best diving though, although it was enjoyable and good value Dont shave the day of the dead sea visit - you get this advice in your joining meeting but by then it might be too late ;o)  Be prepared for a dry(ish) holiday where alcohol is concerned. Not all restaurants will sell alcohol and if they do expect it to be expensive.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

A great and varied week in an interesting country.   Although classified as leisurely/moderate we seemed to be on the go all the time.    Highly recommended

Most Inspirational Moment

Petra is an amazing place and definitely needs 2 days to do it justice.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Sami is a character,  that's for sure.  He gave us a great insight into life in Jordan,  and was happy to debate and listen to others views.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Do take a sleeping bag with you, and sleep outside at Wadi Rum.   You could leave the sleeping bag on the bus all week if you wanted to free up your luggage a bit.    Do also do the camel ride.   Everyone enjoyed it,  and what a place to ride a camel!

A WEEK IN JORDAN

Interesting in every way. Natural history would make it worth the trip. Add in the masses of history and friendly people and you have a wonderful holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

Just how safe it was. The money exchange in Petra had no locks, no security screens, no cameras. The staff had no need for them and were rightly proud of the fact.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Khaled was friendly, knowledgeable and informative. His input certainly contributed significantly to the success of the trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Go!Be prepared for lots of walking in Petra - but well worth the effort.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

Varied itinerary, mixed activities and so suited me to the ground. We had a large group, but actually you also get plenty of time to do your own thing, so this didn’t create a problem. Friendly people and country, that has been affected by all the unrest around it, but is in itself safe and welcoming. The tour had a steady pace, so still felt like a holiday .

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking down the Sik in the dark , illuminated only by candles, on our first evening in Petra. So our first experience was unclouded by the knowledge of what we saw in the light the next day.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Really experienced, professional, very knowledgeable and friendly, good sense of humour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a sleeping bag for in the desert, but if it is broght, sleep outside, ear plugs helpful.Dont expect western standards for hotels, but the ones choosen by exodus are always adequate and suit the 3 star status. we found ours good, some other people on the trip weren't impressed. service good and food reasonable too.used ATM for money, but had an unsuccessful attempt on the first day. Also plenty of places to change money, so would recommend taking some cash to do this too.Walking trainers suffice for scrambling round the rocks and paths of petra, if you are a confident/ experineced walker, and actually provide better grip.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

I love Middle East, the colours, the scents, food, warm and welcoming peoples with a lay back attitude to life. Everything there happens “Insha Allah”. Amongst other Middle East countries Jordan has a very special place. Wherever you go thousands of years of history unfolds in front of you. You don’t have to close your eyes to imagine how was the life under Romans, the Greeks, the Ottomans and then the Crusaders. Walking on the cobbled streets surrounded by mixed Roman and Greeks pillars, you are actively participating in a daily life of our ancestors. You can feel the power of the super wealthy, the hustle and bustle of the city life with shopkeepers calling the customers to visit their shops, you can rest by the water fountain and look down on the dwelling of those less privileged and ponder how dreadful their life must have been. You can admire the brilliant minds of the architects and engineers and feel empathy for the slave’s labour. You are literally re-living the past times. Step out from the ancients cities and you are walking in the footsteps of the Prophets, the holy of the holies, the places from the Bible, the Holy Quran and the Torah. Jordan has it all the beauty and the soul.

Most Inspirational Moment

Jordan is full of interesting places and each of them leaves unforgettable memories however Petra is out of this world. No matter what you have seen or read in the books it will still surprise you with its ingenuity, beauty and the spectrums of colours. Meet the peoples, the custodians of the Nabateans and you will feel like the time has stopped and you are part of that past life, an amazing experience. The next uplifting experience was on Mt Nebo where once Moses stood and looked across the Jordan River to the Promised Land, which he was never to set his foot on. The floating in the Dead Sea will never be forgotten as well as camping with the Bedouins and stargazing in Wadi Rum. I will also treasure the encounter with a handsome Bedouin who was ready to give up his two camels Shellah and Aboresha (his favorite one) in exchange for my beautiful, tall, blond friend. He wanted to make her a Queen Bedouina. I was going to be a matchmaker. Not sure what the customs would say seeing two camels at the UK border. At the end the not-be-groom rode his camels along our open jeep and blew endless kisses to his not-be-bride. My friend was leaving re-assured that she has an open invitation to come back to her own Kingdom.

Thoughts on Group Leader

What can you not say about Zuhair? He is the Best!  First of all he is handsome, that counts in Jordan very much. Secondly he has very warm personality; thirdly he has enormous knowledge of the ancient and modern history of Jordan. He also loves his country and its’ people and that became infectious on us. He was an ideal guide. He knew where and when to go, so we could avoid the crowds and feel special. He made an extra effort to show us places where other tourist normally won’t visit. He told us many stories, most of them from 1000 and something Zuhair’s Arabian nights J He took us to the restaurants where we could sample the local food and we took him to the Cave Bar in Petra where we danced Arabic dances with local Bedouins (three steps to the right and a kick, again three steps to the right and a kick and the rest whatever anyone remembered). We had our own dance. You are a Jordanian shining Star, thanks Zuhair.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The successful trip makes up from a good guide, the places at the destination and the travelers. We had it all. We have bonded from the start. We did things together and have times where individual preferences where respected, we made a point of dinning together, we were different in ages but this never stopped us from enjoying each other company. My main advice is, take your time in your busy schedule to stop to talk to the local people. Greet them in their language, ask for their names, ask about their family and life. Order tea with Richela in Petra on the steps on away up to the Monastery, it will be ready when you go down. Ask the Bedouin at the one of the View Point to play you a lute and ask for the translation of the song. They love their poems about their existence. Speak to the Bedouins selling jewelry. You will learn a lot why they have chosen this type of life having access to modern technology. Lots of them are educated people with their own dreams. Learn from locals 5 pillars of Islam, you would be surprised how close we are in our believes. And in a small way help the local economy. My friends and family love the presents are bought for them. It costs double in the UK. Jordan isn’t the cheapest place on earth. They don’t have natural resources’ like their neighbors so tourists are greeted with open arms and you will often hear a word “welcome” so whatever we spent there is greatly appreciated.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

This has to be the best week long holiday we have taken with Exodus. A week packed full of amazing places to see and things to do, not only is Jordan a ” hidden treasure” but the people are so friendly too!

Most Inspirational Moment

It's difficult to put a " number one" but how can that not be Petra. Petra is a place that we had always wanted to see, but we had no idea just how vast , beautiful and awe inspiring it would be. The highlight of Petra may very well have been hiking ( not very strenuous ) in the mountains above Petra and looking down at it from the heights. Exploring the temples and caves that the " normal " tourists don't get to see. Wadi Rum was also a surprise and a delight. Sitting alone in the silence watching the sun go down. Or going out with the group in the evening and just lying on the sand, gazing at the stars in the silence was truly inspirational. There was much laughter and fun amongst our group, which also made this holiday

Thoughts on Group Leader

Zuhair, was full of fun. He was extremely knowledgable and we felt very safe in his experienced hands. He knew the best routes to take, the best places to eat and the best things to do. We loved listening to his story's and anecdotes on the long journeys and around the camp fire at Wadi Rum.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take a sleeping bag for Wadi Rum, it will be more comfortable. We went in February and on a day to day basis we could go from T shirts and needing sun block to needing a warm jacket. Take layers to peel on and off. It didn't rain when we were there, but it can do. A torch is essential at Wadi Rum, and shoes you can wear in the Dead Sea also. The Red Sea was a little cold in February but we could snorkel and there was a lot to see. But I suggest you take some warm clothes to put on for when you get out of the water..
