Walking in Puglia and Matera

The holiday was all that I hoped it would be. I’ve learnt so much about an area of Italy where I hadn’t been before. Good company with mix of ages, great accommodation, easy walking and fantastic guide.

Most Inspirational Moment

Matera was beautiful with hidden house and churches in caves. Great hotel. Alberobello - I hadn't realised there would be so many Trulli houses.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Amazing - from the start to the end of the trip, she informed us of all the local history. She provided help with restaurants and even arranged for two packed lunches whilst we were walking. Great local knowledge which was invaluable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Definitely one for your short list!

Surprising and very enjoyable

Great guide in Marinella! Very beautiful scenery, great hikes over rolling hills and flat olive groves

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing Matera for the first time, trying the local cuisine.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Great leader!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Wear good shoes - some of the hike trails are a bit stony.

This was my first time walking holiday with a group and was very pleasantly surprised
How much I enjoyed it.Places we went were impressive and interesting. The food was great
and ofcourse the wine. There was lots to take in,and all the walks were great.Thoroughly enjoyed them.

Most Inspirational Moment

Old Matera city, everything about the place.Locorotondo town was amazing. Last but not the least dining exp at the local farmhouse organised by our guide Guisseppe.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Guisseppe was very good with providing all the information. He was very good with the whole group and very helpful. He had a good sense of humour.

Walking on Matera and Puglia

.A very interesting and varied trip, taking in some superb towns and villages, with fascinating histories and dramatic or unique architecture The countryside is pleasant but not that interesting as it lacks great scenery. Accommodation was excellent and food often very unusual and tasty.

Most Inspirational Moment

The history and sights of Matera. The architecture of Lecce, which some of us did on our free day, was sumptuous. The feast at the farmhouse we went to on our last night was fit for a king!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our guide Giussepe was superb: he gave us loads of information about the places we visited, was an excellent leader of our walks, provided fabulous picnics and recommended or took us to great places to eat. He was very caring of every member of the group, was always cheerful and displayed a really good sense of humour. A first class guide, with only the occasional and slight lapse in correct information about the nature of the walks on some days

Advice for Potential Travellers

The walking was not always gentle and could be especially difficult in the heat, so perhaps not a good idea to go in the height of the summer. Take a walking pole or stick, as this proved necessary for some ascents or descents

Pretty Puglia and magnificent Matera

A lovely gentle hiking trip in southern Italy. Walking through olive groves and along an aqueduct. Visiting the Unesco heritage town of Matera with its interesting history and hopefully positive future as a European city of culture. Also the stunningly pretty old town of Alberolbello with its trulli houses. Not to mention the delicious local food and friendly people. Marinella our leader was so enthusiastic and knowledgable about her home region. She also booked some great evening meals and a wine tasting that was also a cheese tasting, so much so that we didn’t need any dinner! The visit to the local farm and cheese factory was fun and the dinner that followed there was so big we had to cancel the pasta course!
Just one piece of advice would be to avoid the rooms in Matera near to reception as they can be quite noisy with fellow guests in reception and moving between reception and the lift.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing the houses and hearing the stories of the lives of the inhabitants of Matera Sassi Caveoso who were only moved out of their cave homes by the government in the early 1950s.

Walked in Puglia and Maters

A pleasant week of gentle walking, visually impressive towns. Also good food and wine (of course).

Most Inspirational Moment

The view of the Sassi from the hotel room in Matera.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent, always attentive and planning ahead.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you like the sound of the above, consider booking.

Walking boots in the heel of Italy

A well led and easy paced walking holiday in surprisingly varied scenery. The wild flowers were stunning. Don’t expect to lose any weight as the picnics and various local food treats and tastings are irresistible.

Most Inspirational Moment

Meeting a sprightly ninety year old gathering wild asparagus.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Marinella is passionate about her region of Italy and her enthusiasm is infectious. She works very hard to accommodate the different interests and requirements of each group member and has a good- humoured, practical and flexible approach. Her suggestions for our free time were spot on. Ten out of ten.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I found walking boots very helpful as the ground is often stoney although there is little ascent on several of the walks. The steps (there are a lot) and streets in Matera would be lethal in the rain. Definitely visit Monopoli on your free day if you get the chance - It's a perfect half day trip from Alberobello. The whole group really enjoyed the optional visit to a dairy farm and very generous home-cooked meal The famous facade of the cathedral in Lecce is completely obscured by scaffolding.

Walking, history, food and wine.

Having never visited the heel of Italy, we had little idea of what to expect. What a delight! The combination of pleasant walking in interesting countryside, historic sites, good food and wine, and a superb guide
made a perfect holiday.

Most Inspirational Moment

Al fresco picnics on walks, magically produced from a rucksack, and delightfully presented right down to the oil and vinegar for the salads!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Marinella is a group leader par excellence. She believes in going the extra mile, and it shows. She loves to share knowledge of her local area, and to make sure all her group has the best possible experience. Nothing phases her. Her hard work, personality, sense of humour and professionalism make her the perfect guide.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Remember to pack insect repellent amd antihistamine cream for the walks.

Just do it!

If you want to see a quiet side of Italy do do this trip! You won’t be disappointed with anything. After a hectic week in Rome this trip was perfect. We loved the group itself and our wonderful guide, Marinella. Everything was done professionally and went very smoothly. November is an ideal time to travel to this place because most of the tourists are gone and the weather is mild.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking in Matera around the cave houses, seeing the cave where the bones of a 28000 year old skeleton were found, going into a 600 year old trulli that was still being lived in, walking through the olive groves enjoying the countryside vistas, sampling the local produce at fabulous picnics put together by our lovely guide, visiting Ostuni the white city, the list goes on. In short we thoroughly enjoyed our week and would do it again.

Thoughts on Group Leader

We loved Marinella, she loves her job and her country, she is a mine of information and does her best to make sure that everything runs smoothly for everyone. We enjoyed her sense of humour and her company, she is an absolute delight. We were impressed by Marinella when one of our group members had an accident (before the walk even started ) and she had to balance care and organizing her as well as guiding the group, she must have been under a great deal of stress but she handled the situation professionally and we never felt that she could have done better.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you do this trip in November make sure that you take warm clothes for at night and good walking boots.

Puglia and Matera

A most relaxing varied and informative trip.

Matera and the Sassi district was a highlite, the hotel and location so unusual. It was valuable having a knowledgeable local guide with family history of the area. The good weather helped of course, but the overarching factor was the excellence of our guide.

Most Inspirational Moment

Personality of the manager of the wine bar where we had the wine tasting in Alberobello. The farm house stay was excellent and the walk from there through the olive groves to the coast was pleasant. It was sobering, rather than inspirational to see the refugees lodged in the Spanish Counts former residence on this walk.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Marinella was an absolute delight. She worked tirelessly to make sure everything went smoothly for the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure you get Marinella as a guide. If you get a bus from Naples, ensure it takes you to the Matera central bus station, not dump you the outskirts of town with no directions and suitcases.
