Finnish Wilderness Week

Quite superb. The setting, the activities, the accommodation, the food and especially the staff were all exceptional. The Arctic Circle in Finland is stunningly beautiful with vast expanses of pristine snow and silent forests. You really do feel a million miles from the rat race.

Most Inspirational Moment

Being invited into the home of the Husky owners was delightful. Downhill skiing at Ruka was an unexpected treat because it was so perfect.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jukka is fantastic; friendly, funny and extremely well organised

Advice for Potential Travellers

Yes; do it!

Must do trip!!!!

Don’t hesitate, book book book!!! This was such a perfect trip. The food at base camp is amazing, the staff are fantastic and the activities are brilliant.

Most Inspirational Moment

Husky dog sledding was good. Northern lights on the first night were brilliant!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was brilliant and really friendly.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Book it and go asap! Everyone should go on the trip.

Finnish Wilderness Week

One of the best holiday experiences I can remember. Basecamp Oulanka is a wonderful place – warm and welcoming and providing all the equipment and clothing needed for the snow activities. The staff are very friendly and professional in their guiding. Oh and the food at Basecamp is excellent too, even for vegetarians like me.

The surrounding snowy landscape with coniferous forest, huge expanse of frozen lake, fast flowing icy river is all that I imgained. Learning to cross-country skii, snow shoe and drive a husky sled were brilliant experiences.

Most Inspirational Moment

Two fantastic experiences (among many) - seeing the Northern Lights three times! and spending a day driving a husky sled across the magnificent Finnish landscape.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jukka was fantastic - patient, professional, a good teacher and with a sense of humour.

Advice for Potential Travellers

For outdoot activities take good under layers - merino or similar. The top layers are provided by the centre. Although the temperatures can drop very low, the Basecamp rooms are lovely and warm due to underfloor heating and a log fire in the main block.

Winter wonderland

Fabulous week at Basecamp, with a great mix of fun, strenuous activities and the comfort of the sauna and the cosy restaurant/bar. Glorious sunshine on the snow every day and clear skies full of the aurora nearly every night.

Most Inspirational Moment

The optional snowshoe trip to Riisituntiri - we were probably the last group of the year to see the snow-covered trees in all their glory, as high winds blew the snow off shortly after, but the walk up the hill among all the strange troll-shapes was fabulous. The full day dogsled was well worth it; the husky farm was so welcoming and well-run, and the lunch provided was absolutely delicious and very welcome on a cold day! And of course the Northern Lights, though the great display meant we never quite got to finish our game of Cluedo...

Thoughts on Group Leader

Jukka was a great group leader, very personable and knowledgeable with a great sense of humour, we were all sad to say goodbye to him at the end of the week. All the other lodge staff were also really fun and friendly and had some great stories to tell about their own adventures.

Advice for Potential Travellers

On the free day, you can buy a pack of sausages from the kitchen and take some logs and kindling, then cook yourself some lunch at one of the firepits along the woodland trails (there are also logs provided at all the woodland huts, but the ones from Basecamp are drier and more reliable). There are also toilets en route so you don't have to drop your kecks in the arctic wind!

Finnish Wilderness Week

This was a week of extensive snow scenes, amazingly empty, quiet open spaces, beautiful skies, both day and night and plenty of winter sport outdoor challenges ! The ethos around Basecamp is infectious: look after the local environment, utilise local resources and food sources, be proud of the Finnish culture and enjoy the snow!
As a group we learned many skills from fire lighting to ice climbing all in a very friendly and thoughtful manner and using really effective kit. The holiday was truly “made” by the lovely staff who run this centre.

Most Inspirational Moment

Stepping outside the main cabin after dinner to watch the northern lights directly above our heads for the next 2 hours! Racing through the sunlit snow behind a team of wonderful huskies! Sleeping out in our very own Quincee, warm as toast in a -12 starlit night! Cooking our reindeer sausages over a campfire in the forest.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our guide was Juuka. Very funny, gentle, thoughtful and caring. He had a vast amount of knowledge and skill in the outdoors and made every session special! We understand that he is relatively new in the job but he seemed very confident and had a natural ability to include everyone and bring humour to all situations!

Advice for Potential Travellers

The Basecamp kit that is loaned to you is very good and we did not need any of our own apart from under garments. We had very little need for many of our evening clothes and little need for cash as everything could be put on our bill. Go for the optional lunches......they were excellent and plenty of it!

Finnish Wilderness Week

We had a superb time at Oulanka Base Camp. The accommodation was very snug and cosy and the food excellent and plentiful. All of the staff were friendly and helpful and our leader Martii was attentive, helpful and kind. The range of activities on the itinerary were fun and well supervised giving us a flavour of some new winter sports.

Most Inspirational Moment

This is hard to pin point to one thing but the husky ride through a stunning slow clad wilderness in the bright sunshine followed by the Northern Lights that same night were amazing. Also we enjoyed the challenge of quinzee building and witnessed Martii turning into a human mole as he helped us burrow into our snow castle! The last night's meal was also a highlight as we ventured outside for the final supper...

Thoughts on Group Leader

Helpful, knowledgeable and very encouraging, he kept us all safe and amused.

Advice for Potential Travellers

We packed far too many clothes as all of the out doors gear is provided for you. Take a kettle for the room if you like a cuppa in the morning and a hairdryer too.

Fantastic Finnish Fun!

A wonderful trip, with full itinerary. Not a lot of down time other than the evenings, but you are going there for the experiences, not to sit around reading books. The organisation was brilliant, everything went like clockwork. You really dont need much in your suitcase. Your layers, jackets, trousers, shoes etc all supplied, and in the evenings, jeans, jumpers and trainers are all fine.
The food was excellent and plentiful, it would be impossible to go hungry, although if I had to say one negative, there was rather alot of Elk on the menu, which is very tasty, but we had it four times.
The area around the base camp is stunningly beautiful, and its actually nice to take some time out from the hectic itinery to just go off into the silence and take it all in.

Most Inspirational Moment

The introduction to dog sledding was amazing, driving your dog team through Narnia type trees , heavily laden with the purest whitest snow...stunning! Plus our group, the comeradery and team spirit was wonderful. I also enjoyed the day of Quinzee building, partly because it was such a beautiful day weather wise that day, plus the group together had great fun.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Henri was extremely professional, but fun, knowledgeable, helpful and friendly, as were all of the staff.

Advice for Potential Travellers

as I said above, no need for loads of layers in your case, they supply good quality, clean stuff!

No 1 holiday!

Just the best week ever! It certainly isn’t a restful week, but it was great to learn new skills. There was down time in the evenings and we could enjoy the sauna and hot tub. Definitely try rolling in the snow after the sauna

Most Inspirational Moment

The huskie sledging was fantastic, driving a team of 5 huskies, I felt like the snow queen in Narnia. The scenery and snow covered trees were breath taking Building our snow igloo was hard work but rewarding, especially the amazing sunset that evening. Trying to sleep in it was fun, pay attention to smoothing the floor, otherwise trying to sleep on chunks of ice isn't great

Thoughts on Group Leader

Henri, our leader was great, knowledgeable and informative, the rest of the team were great, especially the chefs who cooked huge quantities of delicious food for our hungry bellies, second helpings were a regular occurrence People with dietary requirements were well catered for

Advice for Potential Travellers

Thick socks aren't included, so take a few pairs. I found I needed my thicker skiing jacket rather than the one base camp provide, but then I feel the cold. Also I used a thicker hat As said in previous reviews, take base layers, everything else is provided Take a towel for the hot tub We over packed, could have got away with a pair of jeans and a few tops for the evening. There is nowhere to go out at base camp, it really is in the middle of nowhere

Fabulous snowy adventure

A great week of mixed activity – snow shoes, cross country skiing, and dog sledding. The tuition happened in the mornings and provided enough information for us to go out on our own in the afternoons. The kit and equipment provided was of a high quality. There is a sauna and hot tub, and lots of great optional additional activities you can opt in to.

Most Inspirational Moment

We loved the optional shoe show trip up into a local National Park - incredible sights and views

Thoughts on Group Leader

Martii was an amazing guide - experienced, funny, helpful, kind in fact generally wonderful!

Advice for Potential Travellers

The food is all homemade and is incredible - very delicious, in huge quantities and very healthy. The packed lunches are also excellent. I brought some of my own outdoor kit but ended up using the kit provided almost all of the time. The warm mittens provided were superb!

Outstanding!

This is an amazing trip – I could not say what the best part of it was because every bit was just fabulous. Starting with the perfect winter scenery, the super cosy, warm and comfy base camp, the wonderful staff, outstanding food which introduced us to a number of delicious local dishes (including catering for all sorts of dietary requirements) and last, but not least the great activities. It is a perfect holiday to get away from the buzz and hectic of our lives, and to focus on your surroundings, nature and sports. For me this was a holiday of many firsts: first time snowshoeing, first time ice mountain climbing, first time to ride a huskie sleigh – and of course (how lucky were we!) the first time to see the Northern Lights! Magical!

Most Inspirational Moment

I couldn't pin point it to one moment or one activity. The summary of all made the trip perfect. Of course, being lucky and seeing the Northern Lights was the icing on the cake, although I believe that it would not have reduced the impression of the trip if we hadn't had that experience.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Marti is very nice, gentle, knowledgeable. He always focused on giving us the best possible experience, checked in on us when we booked and returned from extra tours.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Listen to the trip notes! No need to bring any outer layers of clothing other than for the evening. The clothing provided is perfect. I did bring some extra fleeces and wore those, and not the provided gear.
