Beautifully Balanced Holiday

My wife and I were apprehensive about booking a guided group tour that was center-based as all our previous hiking trips were both self-guided/planned and a bit more aggressive. However, we found the center-based, guided and group aspects made for a truly delightful holiday. The chalet was extremely comfortable and clean, located perfectly at the edge of town with magnificent views right out the front door. The hikes were challenging enough to satisfy most athletic people yet not so demanding that they could not be enjoyed by moderately active people. And the views – WOW! Every view seemed better than the next. Every day ended with tea (or cocktails) and home made treats in the common area followed by a 3-course, gourmet meal, paired with wine prepared by our private chefs extrordinaire, Sarah and Richard. Our guide’s (Peter) knowledge of the history, geology and botany of the area made each hike interesting and enjoyable and meeting new people who share enthusiasm for the outdoors was the icing on the cake. All-in-all, we were thrilled with our Exodus experience and can’t wait to start researching our next Exodus trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

Here I was sitting outside a mountain refuge, sipping Italian espresso, breathing cool, clean mountain air and looking at some of the most magnificent views of the Mount Blanc massif. Was I dreaming? No! I was on an Exodus Travel hiking trip. It was hard to believe the life could ever be that good.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was obviously an accomplished hiker and climber yet he paced our group in a manner that allowed all to enjoy each hike. His knowledge of the local history, geology and botany made the hikes more enjoyable and his personality fostered an environment that helped our group bond well - that is had more fun!

Advice for Potential Travellers

I recommend you come ready to relax (assuming you too find hiking relaxing) and leave the rat race and your electronics behind. Carry a little cash with you on each hike to buy a cafe' at the refuges that dot the mountains and make some new friends right away with whom you can share a bottle of the daily recommended wine starting on the first evening.

Amazing trip!

Fantastic week in amazing surroundings with great people, we stayed in chalet chocolat which is a lovely chalet with everything needed for a comfortable stay, hosts zohi and ben were brilliant, very friendly and accomodating and kept us well fed with excellent food. 5 days of walking amongst fabulous scenery and a day to explore, paraglide, ride the cable cars etc. Our guide for the walks, tom, was fantastic, friendly, full of knowledge and contributed to a brilliant week. All round a great holiday, would highly recommend.

Most Inspirational Moment

Everyday brought something new so difficult to pick one moment, the walks offered varying amazing views of the alps and paragliding on the day off was unbelievable.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our leader tom was brilliant, full of stories, great knowledge of the local area and around the world, and a very friendly guy.

Perfect Week in Chamonix France

My husband, son, and I just spent a delightful week in Chamonix , France on the Mt Blanc highlights trip. We stayed in Chalet Chocolat and loved every minute of the trip. Each day we enjoyed a great breakfast and packed up a lunch that included sandwiches with fresh locally baked bread and salads prepared by our wonderful chalet hosts Zohi and Ben.
Our guide Shaun would lead us daily to a different area around Mt Blanc for a beautiful hike in the Alps. The hike itineraries were well planned out. We saw a variety of areas and had time for a great picnic lunch each afternoon.
In the afternoons Zohi had a delicious cake waiting upon our arrival back at the Chalet. We could also enjoy time in the hot tub with views of Mt Blanc.
Every night Zohi and Ben cooked a delicous gourmet meal.
We couldn’t have been happier on our trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

My favorite moment was picnicking in a field of wild flowers in Italy .

Perfect holiday!

Wow, what can I say? This holiday exceeded my expectations in every way – the walks were varied and interesting, the weather was amazing and our hosts Sarah and Rich at Chalet Chamonix were brilliant, providing us with gourmet international cuisine every evening and gorgeous cakes in the afternoons after our walks. The scenery and views were stunning – I was in awe of the scale of everything compared to our English Lake District mountains. The days weren’t as long as I was expecting – we had plenty of stops for refreshments and time to go into the lovely town of Chamonix.

Most Inspirational Moment

The jaw dropping views on all the walks, but especially from the top of the Aiguille du Midi, being so high up and close to Mont Blanc and looking down over the Chamonix valley.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mark was an excellent leader - organised, informative, knowledgeable and good company. He catered for the needs of all abilities in the group and entertained us with his 'true stories'.

Advice for Potential Travellers

As a regular fell walker I found the walks easier than I'd expected and the short stretches of via ferrata completely manageable (none of the days contained anything worse than I'd encountered in the Lake District). I'd had concerns before the trip as I'm ok with heights but not exposure - happily I managed everything I came across without worry. However, the walks shouldn't be underestimated if you're unfit or unused to regular walking - they are tough ascents and descents, often on rough and loose ground.

A fabulous week!

A fantastic combination of a very friendly group, wonderful guide and the culinary delights of Chalet Chamonix. Quite a jackpot! We enjoyed it all and the mountains and breathtaking views lived up to all expectations. We also benefited from a tremendous work out each day for legs more accustomed to the flat lands of The Netherlands! It was a great experience.

The unassuming superstars of Chalet Chamonix are Sarah and Rich whose hospitality and delicious food exceeded our expectations; I think they must set a new culinary standard for Exodus trips! The teatime cakes and international cuisine at dinner created a welcome and unexpected element to the trip which was quite a talking point.

Our group had quite a discussion about the activity grading of this trip, most felt that parts of it felt more strenuous than the indicated ‘Moderate 3’ might suggest. However, you do feel like you have had a very full and enjoyable week at the end.

Most Inspirational Moment

There are many on this trip! The day in Italy was a good contrast to the higher walks on the French side; wonderful wild flowers everywhere and delicious hot chocolate and ice cream.... The trip up to the Aiguille du Midi on the free day is really worth doing; it's impressive.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mark is great! A real, no-nonsense, mountain man with huge experience. Our group included those with different levels of experience, including a fell runner, but I felt he made us all feel comfortable, also ensuring we knew the programme for the day, so we could enjoy the holiday as part of a group.... I feel I learned a lot about the area too.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Yes, read the trip notes carefully and then read them again! You do need to be fit and have some hill walking experience (and gear) to enjoy this trip properly. The trip is listed 'Moderate 3' but it is certainly more demanding, because of the ascents and descents, than other trips we have experienced at this level. However, we enjoyed it very much. The views and landscape are worth all the effort.

Trip Review

A thoroughly enjoyable trip with expert guidance walking in the Mont Blanc region.
Comfortable accommodation in Chamonix, within easy walking distance from town centre.
Gourmet, three course dinners also provided with breakfast and picnic lunches

Most Inspirational Moment

Being in the French alps in summer, with breathtaking views during the walks and from the chalet.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was friendly, professional and knowledgeable.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I assumed I would be one of the oldest people participating in this walk at 61 and was delighted to find that fellow participants were of a similar age and similar interests.

Mont Blanc Highlights

A good introduction to walking in the Chamonix region

Most Inspirational Moment

The high walks looking down into the Chamonix valley and the lower level walk in the Aosta valley. wonderful colours with wild flowers.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Very safe and looked after the group well.

Advice for Potential Travellers

You should have walking experience in mountains and be able to manage fairly steep climbs. Small amounts of via ferrata but always plenty of good chains/ropes to hold on to. Important to have reasonable fitness for the uphill. Some days involve climbs of 1000m. Sturdy walking boots required. Walking poles not essential but may help on the downhill sections.

Wonderful trip

Organisation of trip excellent. Stayed in Chalet Chocolat, comfortable, what made our stay was out hosts Zoe and Ben who ran the chalet efficiently and were great fun. The catering was gourmet standard with fabulous cakes every day. Our guide Mark has lived in the area for 10 years, he was a superb guide and had many interesting stories. The terrain was quite tough for us in our 60’s but very enjoyable with world-beating views. We enjoyed sharing the chalet with a good crowd.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get fit and you'll enjoy it even more

Mont Blanc Highlights- Chalet Chamonix

I wasn’t sure about a holiday in the mountains. I enjoy walking and thought I’d be up for the challenge. I wasn’t disappointed. Most of the week we were in Chamonix we had warm sunshine, which simply made the mountains more spectacular.
Chalet Chamonix was comfortable as a base and the food, including the cakes on our return from walking, little short of amazing. It was interesting to have 2 hosts at the chalet who both looked after us for the week as well as driving us to where we needed to be so that our guide could lead us up the mountain paths.

Most Inspirational Moment

I couldn't point to just one - the views from the highest points of our walks were great - with the exception of the one day when the cloud came down on us. One of the most troubling aspects was to see just how quickly the level of the huge glacier above Chamonix was going down as the ice melted.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader was quiet and efficient, always ready with information when asked and engaging with each of the group on the topics that most interested them. The hosts were welcoming and ready to make our stay both comfortable and fun.

Advice for Potential Travellers

It helps to take seriously the advice to be as fit as you can be and get used to walking both uphill and downhill. Walking poles really do help. If you can print boarding pass and baggage tag for your return through Geneva airport it will make things much quicker and less stressful!
