Gruelling But Amazing

This hiking/trekking holiday was an amazing experience which included daily challenging hikes along with the incredible natural beauty of Mont Blanc, its’ valleys and surrounding mountains. Our tour mates, 13 women and one man were all wonderfully kind and supportive of one another as we worked hard to meet our daily hiking challenges. I couldn’t have completed this trip without many weeks of training yet I still found the river crossings and some of the terrain, loose rocks making foot placement challenging, to be at the top end of what I was comfortable with. Thank goodness for my waterproof boots and my tour group which kept a slow and steady pace.

Most Inspirational Moment

The awe-inspiring views all around you when on the trails and realizing the accomplishment of completing many days back to back on such challenging trails. I particularly enjoyed the walk from Switzerland into Italy through the snow.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our group leader, Egle, was just adequate, and didn't match the quality of any of the other Exodus guides that I've had in the past, in both Europe and Asia. She typically hiked at the head of our group of 14 and for those at the tail of the group, they often went for quite some time without seeing her. Thankfully, we were a cohesive group and we took care of each other. Also, upcoming trail details often weren't adequately conveyed at daily meetings so we were often surprised on the trail with the conditions, terrain, etc. It would have been beneficial to have had two guides (as I experienced on my Exodus Bali trip) for a group that was the maximum size. This guide didn't come close to meeting what I had come to expect from Exodus.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Amazing trip and be sure to do your training. Breakfasts are sometimes sparse so bringing snacks along is helpful. The ladder section on day one was really fun and nothing to worry about. In July, we had fabulous weather with only one day washed out due to thunderstorms in the forecast.

14-day Tour du Mont Blanc Trek

This was a great trekking experience with plenty of good advice available from the Exodus team beforehand in terms of preparation and what to expect. We started in the second week of the trekking season and so encountered a good deal of snow, which for us was a first in terms of trekking. We also had two fairly short ‘river’ crossings, which we had to negotiate and again a first for us. Our group leader was an extremely experienced mountain guide who made a great deal of effort to keep the group focussed on the trail ahead especially when it mattered. Amazing views at the tops of climbs and probably not a good trek for those with a fear of heights!

Absolutely Stunning

Pictures don’t capture the unreal beauty of this trip! I took them anyway but by our last hiking day I was in tears from the accomplishment, the energy of our group, and the beauty of the valley and mountains. This is a trip of a lifetime!

I always felt I was pretty active but this trip challenged me in ways I wasn’t sure I could finish, but am so happy to say I DID! We left smiles, tears, and friendships in the mountains. Just an incredible experience and our guide, Marià, is a beast who was turning around to do it all over again in 2 days! Absolutely impressive and he was an incredible guide that kept us motivated, safe, and smiling. Only a few Spanish minutes till the top.

Most Inspirational Moment

Our last hiking day when we hit the first hut I was in tears. It was a crystal clear day, the paraglides were out, the flowers were blooming, people were smiling, it was surreal to have so much beauty all around.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Bring gear you’ll need to be comfortable. Training is important but tenacity takes you where training didn’t. We had folks in our group who barely trained and killed it! I felt ready for each day but having gear to be comfortable in layers was key.

Outstanding hiking trip!

If you’re looking for a fabulous hiking trip around Mont Blanc with a guide, hotel accommodations, nearly all meals included, and luggage transport, Exodus Travels is an excellent choice.

Most Inspirational Moment

Taking in the vast natural beauty of glaciers, mountain peaks, waterfalls ... and making it to the end of each day's hike, happily!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Our guide Mike was superb - knowledgeable, confident and encouraging, with a good sense of humor, and most importantly: he exuded an added measure of leadership and competence the day we had especially challenging conditions of snow, sleet, hail, white-out, and slippery rocks.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Training pays off! The training guide on the Exodus Travels website is helpful. The weather is unpredictable - we had several very hot days, rain and then a day of snow, sleet and hail, so pack for all possibilities.

Brilliant guide, amazing scenery

I’d hiked in the Chamonix area before, so I knew it would be stunning, but the variety of incredible scenery as we went round to the Swiss and Italian sides exceeded my expectations. The weather was extreme – 35 degrees for the first few days, then rain and finally sleet, snow and full-on winter conditions – don’t ignore the trip notes advice on clothing! Our guide, Mike Napier, was exceptional, managing the group with expertise and humour throughout.

Most Inspirational Moment

Completing the circuit, which I'd first started (but failed to finish) 40 years ago.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Mike was probably the best leader I've had on any trek. Always good company with plenty of jokes, he took full control when it got tricky in the snow and ice and got us all down safely.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Just do it!

Stunning scenery and a great sense of achievement at the end

A huge thank you to our guide Mike who gave us excellent advice each morning and managed to keep us all motivated and together each day The weather is unpredictable with extreme heat for the first week and one day of rain, snow and ice so be prepared! The food was good, the hotels were clean although some were basic due to the remote locations. The staff were great. Some days were very tough but the views were worth it and Mike rewarded us with Jaffa Cakes and M&M’s.

Most Inspirational Moment

Finishing the climb to Le Brevent on our last day

Thoughts on Group Leader

I was inspired by Mike’s attitude to the mountain, he was determined that we would leave as little trace as possible of our visit. No toilet paper left behind😳❤️ He has great people skills and managed to keep everyone motivated

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for all types of weather even in August it can snow. Read the trip notes A light robe for the days when not en suite and a small poly bag to take away your toilet roll😵‍💫

TMB

Overall excellent trek with a compatible group and an amazing guide, Augustine.

Most Inspirational Moment

Some of us climbed the peak called Tete de Ferret after a hard hike to the Col. Highest point we reached on the TMB and could see where we came from and where we were going.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Augustine was one of the highlights of the trip. Knowledgeable, optimistic, funny and a great leader. He knew how to motivate us and made good decisions about routes and how everyone was feeling. It was a pleasure spending two weeks with him.

Trip of a Lifetime

Sometimes you do a trip confident that it will give you great memories for many years to come, even a feeling of awe. For us TMB comes into this category. Let’s be clear from the onset – this a physically challenging trip – over 10 walking days we covered c 100 miles ascending c 32K feet (higher than Everest) and descending c28K feet. Din’t expect glitz – the trip takes you off the beaten track. Some properties are basic (no en-suite WMC and/or shower). Others. In particular the Hotel Richemonde in Chamonix where we started and ended the trip, had great character. Staff took great effort to make us welcome. Lunch is basic, but has to be sourced in locations where choice is limited. For us such details are relatively inconsequential given the stunning scenery we saw (we were blessed with great weather each day bar one). So all in all a genuine trip of a lifetime giving us memories to treasure.

Most Inspirational Moment

The scenery we saw each day was inspirational. Best one off experience was seeing a huge male ibex 10 feet away.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Overall Maria was a great leader. His knowledge was extensive. He went to great effort to source food for lunches when this was challenging due to product availability. He managed to get us up and down majestic mountain passes each day in time to have a hot shower and cold beer before a hearty dinner. This was no mean achievement given that on some days we had to catch local buses that operated at irregular intervals. Most importantly, given that climbing mountains anywhere carries a degree of risk, we always felt in very safe hands. A short briefing each night about the day ahead would have been useful.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Read the trip notes carefully in advance to understand what the trip entails.
