MOUNTAINS & VILLAGES OF EVIA

A very enjoyable week with a small group of very agreeable people. When we experienced the coldest ever recorded October day at the beginning of the week and I collapsed exhausted on my bed in the evening after battling up the hill to Castello Rosso against galeforce winds I wondered if I had made the right decision but things could only get better – and they did.

Most Inspirational Moment

I had no inspirational moment but enjoyed it all. Certainly seeing the Roman columns is pretty awesome (if that word is not too overused) and the view from the top of the sacrificial table (or whatever it was) on Mount Kliosi at the Acropolis of Styra is breathtaking. I also loved the walk down the Demosaris Gorge - where Thanos chose a beautiful place to stop for lunch. I imagine it would be a wonderful place to bathe in the summer - but a bit cold in October.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Thanos certainly proved to be a good organiser - arranging hotel rooms at short notice on the mainland when we missed the ferry the first evening, finding alternative transport when there were strikes and finding an alternative taverna at short notice for our evening meal on the day of solidarity when everything was shut. Everything worked out perfectly. He was great company and kept us entertained with lots of local knowledge and interesting stories - even if some of them proved not to be true! He is certainly very proud to be from Evia - and he has alot to be proud of.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The walks are mainly downhill - so be warned if you have weak knees! The longest walks were in the range of 12-15 km - so quite moderate, but some of them are on quite rough ground so poles could be a good idea. And the taxi drives up and down the mountains are not for the weak-hearted - there are not many good roads on the island.Try the Septem beer at the first opportunity - you may not get another!

CYCLING VIETNAM

The good – Very well organised trip, excellent standard of accommodation, great guides and support team, a wonderful country. The bad – a bit slow going at times and a high average age, making it not so good for younger solo travellers. Overall, though, a superb way to experience Vietnam.

Most Inspirational Moment

On two wheels, reaching the top of the Hai Van pass and realising that I've completed the trip, just a year after suffering near fatal head and leg injuries in a cycling accident. Off the bike, the real highlight was Halong Bay. The bay is stunning, the boat was very good and the food on board was exceptional. There are so many others. Crossing the road in Saigon. All the kids shouting hello as you ride past. Sharing utterly disgusting food with Vietnamese rail workers on the Reunification Express. Swimming in the south china sea.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Chi was very friendly, knowledgable, always smiling and very energetic. A brilliant group leader.

Advice for Potential Travellers

The average age of this group was about 50, maybe more.

EVEREST BASE CAMP

Amazing fantastic must do trip !!!

Most Inspirational Moment

To reach everest base camp amazing

Thoughts on Group Leader

Group leader was very good and helpfull

Advice for Potential Travellers

KILIMANJARO CLIMB - LEMOSHO ROUTE

Great trip – highly recommend the route for pacing and acclimitisation.  The final climb is the hardest of course but with the route I felt as if I was getting stronger each day.  It is a spectacular climb and something to remember forever.

Most Inspirational Moment

Last half hour of final climb when sun rising to the East.  That melted away all tiredness and any doubts on reaching the Summit and replaced it with a big grin!  The whole trip is great so be sure to take lots of photos - its also great getting up early every morning to see the Sunrise and also to see the Stars at night - you wont forget those moments.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Simon Matthews (African Walking Company) was very clam, led his guides and porters well and everything went smoothly.  He has lots of experience of the mountain (hundereds of climbs - he lost count) and it is comforting to know that experience is there if needed.  Also dealt with a mountain rescue without turning a drama into a crisis!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Get as much advice and tips from people who have done the climb before.  Pay close attention to getting the right kit.  Good kit will make life much easier and avoid any hassles!  Other than that there is nothing much to worry about - if you are reasonably fit then you will make the climb - my only climbing training was walking up and down the beach :o (I live on an island with the highest point being the rubbish tip).  Highly recommend taking the longer Lemoshu route for Kili - it helps with altitude acclimitisation which is very important.  Altitude sickness is really the only obstacle to achieving the Summit.

MACHU PICCHU & GALAPAGOS

As usual Exodus provided and supplied a superb trip that lived up to my expectations.

Most Inspirational Moment

Visiit to Machu Pichu site and the whole week sailing and visiting the Galapagos Islands. Also interesting short tours of Cusco and Quito.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Excellent in Cusco and Peru and in th Galapagos

Advice for Potential Travellers

Prepare your fitness for the Inca Trail

THE TURQUOISE COAST

Good, relaxing, well organised and thoroughly enjoyable.  Less energetic than other "moderate" walking holidays I have been on.

Most Inspirational Moment

Wonderful visit to Arykanda - I'm not generally a "ruins" person, but this was really fascinating.

Thoughts on Group Leader

First class.  He was knowledgeable, well organised, pleasant company and showed interest and concern for all in the group.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Although daytime temperatures were warm, evenings can get quite cool (mid-October), and some people found that they had not taken enough warm clothing.

CYCLE NICARAGUA, COSTA RICA AND PANAMA

I have to say that Rob, our Tour Leader prepared that trip in the most perfect way, wonderful and precise trip notes given to us at the beginning of the trip. The daily information could not have been better! It would have been nice to stop and learn something about the banana and coffee plantations we noted, there are some kind of museums when cycling past. This would have enriched the trip and therefore I gave the mark "lacked a bit of sparkle". Some Information re animals and wildlife and developments of the countries would have been an additional asset. Otherwise – a great trip with lots of fun.

Most Inspirational Moment

The sight of animals during the cycling and in the evenings. The possibility to go snorkling was absolutely wonderful. Thanks to Rob again for having arranged the private boat.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Rob is a great tour leader and his team supported it making it a super trip.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Plenty of sun cream.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

We have just returned from one of our best holidays.Jordan is diverse ,every day of the holiday brought a special moment ranging from relaxing in the Dead sea to walking into Petra by candlelight and waking up in the Wadi Rum desert riding out on a camel to watch the sunrise and by lunchtime we were snorkelling in the Red Sea.

Most Inspirational Moment

It is difficult to pick one inspirational  moment because every day had a highlight.Petra is magical ,we saw it initally by candlelight ,then by daylight and on our third day climbed to look down on it.However I would not want to miss out on the Dead sea, having a mud wrap and then floating in the salty waters.I did not want to leave- it was so unusual.Sitting around a campfire in the Wadi Rum sipping tea and listening to Bedouins sing and then when lights out came climbing to a sand dune to watch the Milky Way.The boat trip in Aquaba when we snorkelled looking at fish coral and an an old sunken tank was lovely especially when you could lie on deck with a glass of wine eating a lovely meal cooked on the boat.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Danny was great .We had a great group and had a huge amount of fun.He was knowledgeable and available to deal with any issues or queries. When we got to Mount Nebo[the burial site of Moses and from where God showed him the Promised Land],Danny had the passage from the Bible ready so that one of the group could read the piece from the bible where God describes what land the Israelites would have.It was very moving but really brought the history to life.He gave us an insight into what it was like to be a Jordanian today and gave us an insight into the hopes and aspirations[as well as the trails and tribulations] that face this lovely country.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Jordan may be more expensive than you think. While not more expensive that the Uk it is more comparable than you might think.Alcohol is not easily available a lot of restaurants do not serve it.However Danny was able to direct us to restaurants in Petra that served alcohol and Aquaba was the one town where it was much more freely available.

A WEEK IN JORDAN

brilliant varied holiday and absolutely great company and guide. However a few more lunch options would be welcome as not everyone can eat two huge meals a day!!

Most Inspirational Moment

floating in the dead sea, walking round to a view point above petra,  and swimming in the red sea tho it was pretty hairy with the wind making you swm on the spot!!

Thoughts on Group Leader

great very knowledgeable but a bit too pushy re religion

Advice for Potential Travellers

take a travel kettle and a big water bottle you will save £££s

CYCLE INDOCHINA & ANGKOR

This trip renewed my faith in group organised holidays. It was well planned, adaptable, encouraged everyone to try new experiences, and showed the very best of 3 countries.

Most Inspirational Moment

Due to the flooding in many areas it was amazing how much of Cambodian/Vienamese life doesn't allow these adverse conditions to affect their day to day life.  We had a trip to a river market and drove through some very small flooded towns, and each person was carrying on, generally smiling as though this was quite normal. I loved the make do and mend attitude of each country to absolutley everything aspect of life. And I was also inspired by my fellow cyclists, those who probably hadn't spent a lot of time on a bike but carried on and the 4 people who fell off, they brushed themselves down and jumped back on again. Awesome.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Al was a great team leader, he was always calm, very organised, knew exactly when to stop and give us all a rest from the heat or the cycling. Pre-warned us on upcoming hills etc, and you could always trust his recommendations when it came to food and/or restaurants.  He was friendly without going over the top, didn't pick favourites which can be a very annoying habit in a leader, and involved himself with everyone at some point or another on the trip.  He was well trusted

Advice for Potential Travellers

If going on this trip, bring some mudguards as 1 person bought them on our trip and we were all jealous of his relatively dry rear end.  If you can get a lot of $1 notes for Cambodia, and on a negative, watch you back if you're in Tuk Tuk or Cyclo as one of our group had their bag nicked by a passing motorbiker.Forget all your highway code as it's worth zilch in these countries and to cross a road in Vietnam, go slow and sure, don't run or stop and everyone will move around you, believe me it works.
