Walking the Amalfi Coast. ..in steps

Really enjoyable holiday in a very friendly family run hotel with just the right amount of walking to discover the highlights of this beautiful coast, alongside a coach trip to fabulous Pompeii and a walk around the rim of Vesuvius.

Most Inspirational Moment

Realising how much life in Roman Pompeii resembles ours today.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Christine was lovely and friendly and full of interesting stories and added thoughtful touches to enhance our holiday experience.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't underestimate the number of steps. Train beforehand and take walking poles to protect your knees.

Walking the Amalfi Coast

This was a great holiday combining walking with seeing the area and visiting some sites such as Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius. The views were spectacular and the walks well planned and thought out.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking the crater of Mt Vesuvius.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Christina was fabulous. She is a lovely person, a wealth of knowledge about the area and managed to work with the varied ages and personalities in our group. It was great having an English guide who was Italian speaking and who obviously was loved and respected by the local villagers but understood our needs as well.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Lots of steps! August is very hot and the Amalfi area is very busy with Italians on holiday.. I felt it added to the atmosphere but not all may agree with this.

Walking the Amalfi Coast

This was an amazing trip that allowed you to see so much of the Amalfi coast within a week. There were 4 days of hiking, all great walks in their own right that were so different from one another. We would usually begin the walking in the mid-morning, reach our destination by mid or late afternoon, then be rewarded with a delicious dinner later that night at our hotel. It was my first time travelling with Exodus, and I will definitely travel with them again in the future. I thoroughly recommend Exodus and can now understand why quite a few of my fellow travellers in this group told me that it was their 20th trip with Exodus and they have not yet had one they did not enjoy. One goes on an Exodus trip twice a year and said they were all unique and positive experiences.

Most Inspirational Moment

Hiking to the top of Mt Vesuvius was definitely the highlight of the trip. To be able to walk all the way around the volcano as well as go inside the crater was such a special moment that won't be forgotten

Thoughts on Group Leader

Christine was the best tour leader I have ever had on a trip. Never have I met someone who was so informative and passionate about Italy, she knew so much and was so interesting! She made the time to make everyone feel included and welcome. It happened to be my birthday on this trip and she got everyone to sign a birthday card and organised a delicious birthday cake for me which was so kind and thoughtful. Thank you Christine for making this such an enjoyable and memorable trip!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Good sneakers or hiking boots are a must. Hiking poles make the trails more comfortable, but are not imperative. The national park hiking trail had a lot of bugs, so bug spray is needed as well as a fan or something to swat the bugs away while you are walking. The hike to Mt Vesuvius meant at the end of the walk our shoes were very dusty, I suggest bringing a small towel that day just to clean your feet when you have the chance. A small towel was great on the hot summery days just to wipe off when you finished the walk and were heading into the towns like Amalfi and Positano.

Walking the Amalfi Coast

Classed as leisurely moderate, this walk was at a leisurely pace, which was really enjoyable and there was plenty of time to take photos, cake breaks, lunch etc. The walks are also classed as moderate, which is the difficulty of the walking. Lots of steps, climbing rocks in parts, loose gravel. Don’t let that put you off. The views were worth every step, every rock and every bit of gravel!

Most Inspirational Moment

The day we spent in Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius was absolutely thrilling. From Pompeii's history, brilliantly explained by the local guide, to Mount Vesuvius, climbing into the crater, was an amazing day.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Christina was unbelievable. She catered for every need. She looked after us, whether we were youngsters or elderly, she was chatty, sociable, explained all the views, terrains, how the car got stuck up the tree (there was a bit of romantising there!) All buses/coaches were well organised. One of the best group leaders I've had.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't hesitate ~ book it. You do need walking boots/shoes and a pole was helpful. A small camera is a must.

Walking the Amalfi Coast July 2014

Very enjoyable week with great walking and spectacular views, a lot of steps, some free time to explore and bathe, very good food and a friendly family run hotel in a relative quiet and fresh location.

Most Inspirational Moment

Walking the whole of the Vesuvius crater rim with Stefano, the local guide. This was highly impressive as the rim is quite steep and narrow in places with the crater far below and with steam issuing forth out in places. Stefano proved to be very informative as he explained the different types of lava and eruptions between the various Italian volcanos, and pointed out the monitoring equipment, the last eruption having taken place here in 1944.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Liz, our guide, was very friendly and helpful. She shared her extensive knowledge and enthusiasm with us and kept us safe.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I found a walking pole essential, especially for the many long descents. I took my own but the hotel has a supply for those who have not taken one. Other "must haves" are sun cream, a sun hat, plenty of water (available to buy at the hotel) and a waterproof. Take plenty of coins in your money when visiting the café at Pompeii as they were very short of change.

The best way to see the Amalfi Coast

Our week on the Amalfi Coast became one of our best holidays which we will always remember. We had wanted to see Amalfi and this part of Italy and this holiday certainly gave us an excellent chance to experience this area through the walks, excursions and visits to local businesses/cafes. The staff at the hotel were all friendly and went out of their way to make your holiday something special and hassle free. Suzy our group leader was always a ray of sunshine and delighted in sharing her knowledge of the area. The walks did encompass some challenging terrain on loose scree, steep inclines/declines but you always felt confident and safe in Suzy’s capable hands. This was a holiday where everything came together to make it wonderful in every way – beautiful scenery, everyone in the group getting along, glorious weather and excellent food. I would not hesitate to recommend both Exodus and this particular trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

The Walk of the Gods with a beautiful view for lunch, culminating with a paddle in the sea at Positano and boat trip back to Amalfi.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Suzy could not be faulted, she knew everyone's name from day 1 and demonstrated understanding of individual's interests and concerns. Her love of this part of the world was evident and her enthusiasm contagious. We could not have found a better guide to show us Amalfi.

Advice for Potential Travellers

I would recommend taking and using walking poles, particularly for negotiating areas of scree and steep inclines. Be prepared for a fairly full schedule, with short window from end of most days walk to meeting for dinner.

Amalfi trip

Fabulous trip – when I come back from Exodus trips I am never sure if the people or the place were the best thing and true yet again. That part of Italy is surely wonderful and the walking was totally great. You do need sticks and also a sunhat……… bear in mind the weather when booking as it was almost too hot for me, though I don’t enjoy the heat so was down to me. Of course our leader Suzie made the trip the best and so memorable her knowledge and care were really great. Visit Herculaneum on the day off – far better than Pompeii. I am hoping cruise ships don’t ruin the area, we avoided Capri because of that though people that went enjoyed that too.

Most Inspirational Moment

Hard to pick a moment - just first walk and seeing the wonderful coastline that we were about to explore.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Wonderful - truly inspirational and fun too.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take two walking sticks, big sunhat and be flexible.

Amalfi; 14th - 21st June 2014

From our first meeting of our group leader, till the final goodbyes to the troops at Naples Airport, was an experience we shall never forget. The holiday was well organised with regards to the walks and the trips. The food and drink was of a very high standard, the hotel was clean and comfortable and the staff friendly and helpful. This was the first time my partner and I have been on a walking holiday, we would certainly go again.

Most Inspirational Moment

The views were breathtaking, didn't realise we would be so high up, especially having lunch on top of the world at around 750 meters. Achieving the walks was inspirational, as we found certain aspects quite demanding, such as steep elevations, narrow footpaths with sheer drops, but not forgetting we did this with a great bunch of people, who looked out for each other.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Meeting Morton at the airport, he made us feel welcome straight away, and reassured us if we had any problems we should not hesitate to contact him one way or the other. As the holiday progressed he would explain everything the night before at his group sessions for the following days agenda. He is polite, extremely passionate about his work, the walks and the history of the country, plus if he couldn't answer a question, he would go away and find the answer, a true professional.

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you are beginners like my partner and I, then possibly be prepared to be taken out your comfort zone, physically and mentally. But if you persevere with the walks, you will certainly feel a sense of achievement, as certainly that was our experience.

Amazing Amalfi

An excellent trip, made better by the leader and group, who all gelled exceptionally well. Beautiful scenery, but be prepared for sore calf muscles after the 2000 steps down into Amalfi and more on other days.

Most Inspirational Moment

The day on Capri was magical, despite getting ripped off big time by the "Blue Grotto" experience. A lovely place to visit on the day off. The Walk of The Gods was amazing luckily the foliage covered the sheer drops down from the cliff edge.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Suzy was a great leader. She was enthusiastic, energetic, knowledgeable, helpful, considerate and always positive. She shared her love of the local people with us and took us to several local establishments to sample local products. One of the best leaders I've ever had with Exodus.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take 2 walking poles for the many steps down. I took just one and was grateful to borrow another one. Don't go to the Blue Grotto on Capri. You have to pay once to get to the cave, then again to get in 26.50 Euros in total! The chairlift up to Anacapri was wonderful.

Walking the Amalfi Coast

An excellent & varied trip.

Most Inspirational Moment

The boat trip from Positano to Amalfi where we saw how far we had walked along the coastline & how much we had descended. Interacting with the local people who were warm, friendly, welcoming & keen to share with us their customs & way of life.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Suzi was enthusiastic, fun, approachable & well organised. She did little extra things for the group, such as handing out sweets, or surprising us with bottles of prosecco, which made us feel valued. I cant fault her.

Advice for Potential Travellers

There are a LOT of steps & hills, both ascending & descending, in addition, many steps are large, uneven or both, but that is the price to pay to experience such spectacular scenery. The Amalfi Coast & its coastal towns is both truly beautiful & impossibly romantic. ( & maybe even a little James Bond-like!) Whilst I would recommend a visit to Capri as an option for a free day, the Blue Grotto trip on Capri is definitely NOT worth the 30 Euros it costs & my friends & I felt ripped-off.
