Top 5 Romanian Tour Highlights

1. Bran Castle
Bran Castle, often referred to as Dracula’s Castle, is a striking fortress perched atop a rocky hill in Transylvania, Romania. With its towering spires, winding staircases, and hidden passageways, it exudes an air of mystery and intrigue, making it one of the most famous castles in the world. Though its connection to the Dracula legend is more myth than fact, the castle’s rich history and Gothic architecture continue to captivate.

2. Bucharest
Bucharest, Romania’s vibrant capital, is a dynamic city where grand historic architecture meets modern innovation. Known as the “Little Paris of the East,” it offers a rich cultural scene, lively nightlife, and a unique blend of old-world charm and contemporary energy.

3. Transylvanian Alps
The Transylvanian Alps, also known as the Southern Carpathians, are a breathtaking mountain range in Romania, offering some of the most dramatic landscapes in Europe. Towering peaks, deep valleys, and dense forests create an ideal setting for outdoor adventures like hiking, snowshoeing, and wildlife watching. Rich in natural beauty and home to diverse flora and fauna, including the iconic brown bear, the Transylvanian Alps are a paradise for nature enthusiasts and thrill-seekers alike.

4. Carpathian Mountains
The Carpathian Mountains, stretching across Central and Eastern Europe, are a vast and rugged range known for their stunning natural beauty and rich biodiversity. In Romania, the Carpathians encompass deep forests, rolling hills, and towering peaks, offering a haven for wildlife, including Europe’s largest population of brown bears. These mountains are a paradise for hikers, adventurers, and nature lovers, with countless trails leading to breathtaking vistas and hidden valleys.

5. Brown Bears
Enjoy a unique opportunity to observe a variety of wildlife in their natural environment on the Carpathian Walking & Bears tour, where you’ll hike through the majestic mountains and rustic villages of central Romania while searching for wild brown bears, and pay a visit to LiBearty, the largest bear sanctuary in Europe, for a one-of-a-kind experience.

This trip had beautiful walks in the Carpathian mountains. Seeing the bears while in the hide was a highlight though. The visit to the bear sanctuary for rescued bears was also very moving. The hikes did require a high degree of fitness. Note that when we booked this trip was a level 2, but the same trip has been reclassified as a level 3, which in our experience is merited. The last day is the most challenging but the last part to the very peak is optional and was only done by a small part of our group. Our guide Sebi was excellent and paced the walk for the group’s abilities. He was also very knowledgeable about the local wildlife and customs.

Malcolm Vant Carpathian Walking & Bears

A great, very well orgsanised trip. Lots of great things to see and do.

Where is Romania?

Romania is located in southeastern Europe, bordered by Ukraine to the north, Bulgaria to the south, Serbia to the southwest, Hungary to the west, and Moldova to the east. It lies along the eastern edge of the Carpathian Mountains and has a coastline along the Black Sea. The country’s central position in the continent makes it a gateway between Eastern and Western Europe.

When is the best time to visit Romania?

The best time to visit Romania is during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) when the weather is mild, and the landscapes are at their most picturesque. Spring offers blooming flowers and vibrant greenery, while autumn provides a stunning array of fall colors, especially in the Carpathian Mountains.

The currency used in Romania is the Romanian leu (RON). There are ATMs in Zarnesti, Brasov and Bran. Credit cards are useful only for major souvenir purchases in cities or in emergencies.

Only exchange money in banks, hotels and recognised exchange shops, it is illegal to change money on the streets. Travelers’ checks are often difficult to exchange.
We recommend you don’t change money at Bucharest Airport as the rate is very poor.
