PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARI

Trip in June 2011. Well exceeded my expectations and worth every hour of overtime done to pay for it.

Most Inspirational Moment

There are so many.......family of 7 cheetahs, family of 4 leopards, lioness carrying cubs, cheetah carrying cubs, early wildebeest crossing the Talek, breakfast with the hippos and sundowners under the stars. Kicheche Mara camp was exceptional,Bruce, Donna and the boys were fantastic hosts.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Has to be experienced to be believed.Psychotic enthusiasm. Shouts a lot but only because he wants you to do well and get the most out of the trip. Detailed knowledge of the Mara and animal behaviour makes for the best possible opportunities for photographs. Encyclopaedic knowledge of foul jokes.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Don't go if you can't get up in the morning or want to whinge about travel arrangements in a 3rd world country. Take a hat and suncream for long days outside. If you couldn't cope with being called all the names under the sun when Paul gets excited about something then don't bother going. It is meant well and if you can't see this then forget it. Beg steal or borrow all the camera gear you can.I recommend lensesforhire.co.uk if you wish to try a big lens but don't have the funds to buy one. I got a canon 300mm 2.8 with a 1.4 converter as i am a bit puny for a 500mm and was very happy with it. I also took my own 70-300mm zoom and a wide angle with polariser. I borrowed another camera body to avoid faffing with lens changes and it was worth it. Tripods NOT needed. Beanbags supplied. Lots of chewy sweeties help to bribe the big man.

CYCLE THE CAMINO DE SANTIAGO

A really good group of people and a trip I’d wanted to do for a few years but which seemed to have disappeared from the brochure for a couple of years before being re-introduced.  Cycling was harder than expected; although rated ‘moderate’ this trip was harder than other ‘moderate’ trips I’ve done in the past; in fact only two of our group actually cycled the whole way without spending any time in the support vehicle.

Most Inspirational Moment

Arriving in the cathedral square in Santiago; it's a beautiful place and a fitting end to the trip.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Nacho and Diane were really good, particularly in sorting out arrangements for one of our group who had a close encounter with a concrete drainage ditch and needed hospital treatment.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be aware this trip has some difficult hills (at least one which is serious 'get of and push for about an hour' territory for those who insist on 'cycling' rather than using the support vehicle).  The first day of the trip isn't great as it goes through the suburbs of Leon and then across largely flat fields with uninspiring views, but the scenery gets better as the week goes on.  With the exception of one night where the rooms were very basic, the hotels were very good, en suites occasionally including full-sized baths which were very welcome after a day's cycling.

WALKING IN THE WESTERN DOLOMITES

A fab trip – amazing scenery, great company, lovely food, hotel and spa and a very enthusiastic and capable guide (Eric)

Most Inspirational Moment

It felt good to get to 'the top' on the days when we had steady climbing and was lovely to see people quietly looking out for each other especially on the steep 'marble roads' where loose stones meant a few of us slipped (elegantly)!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eric was very keen and organised and a lovely bloke. He offered options for those wanting half days or needing to avoid the steeper climbs and even organised a quiz in the bar.He was keeping an eye on all of us without it being obvious and gently played down how much more climbing there might be - the term 'relatively flat' wil never mean the same again!

Advice for Potential Travellers

Take 2 walking poles - I found them really helpful on steep ascents and descents and they stopped me slipping over a few times (although some people didn't use them at all)You may need more cash than suggested - we ate in restaurants which was better than picnics as we often needed a big bowl of pasta etcIf you want to be as fit as possible then do some steep ascents and descents pre trip!Don't forget your blister plasters!

CYCLING THE DALMATIAN COAST

A fabulous adventure, exploring a stunningly beautiful part of Croatia. Great company, spectacular sceanery, challenging cycle routes (no-one told me it was a hilly place before I went) and wonderful ice-cream – what more could you want?

Most Inspirational Moment

The best cycling day was definatly the last - the downhill coastal path was breathtaking, and we stopped for photos so many times that we missed lunch! However, my personal highlight was when we were joined by a pod of dolphins in the water on the ferry crossing from Hvar to the mainland - absolutely brilliant watching them jump playfully in the water around the boat.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Bojan is new to Exodus and did a great job organising and motivating such a diverse group of people. He was great fun, very sociable and was up to the challenges of games of tennis and ping-pong laid down by various members of the group (and he always won, I warn you now). He's also pretty good at eating ice-cream too, and you can be assured he'll point out the best places in town.  His sense of humour was fantastic, and he seemed to really understand how to get the best out of each cyclist, offering the right amount of support to help us all achieve our full cycling potential.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Looking back on the trip, overall I would say that it was fantastic, and I have come home with a great desire to visit the Dalmatian Coast again. The beaches and islands are absolutely beautiful, and cycling gives you the opportunity to explore the less well travelled paths (such as the coastal path on the last day). However, I would say that a few of us found that we were slightly unprepared for the level of fitness required for some of the more "undulating" routes! The first day includes a 10km uphill stretch, and if that doesn't mean that much to you (as it didn't to me before I went) then it means peddling uphill continuously for a very long time!! I certainly wasn't fit enough for it, and walked part of the way (and I wonder whether this climb ought to be removed from the trip) The second day also has a pretty long uphill stretch, which was very tough going in the heat, with a head wind - I guess I would advise you to carefully consider the time of year that you go, do some training beforehand to get the most enjoyment out of your holiday and, for the novices amoungst you, I would advise learning a little bit about how to work with your gears and how to maximise your efficeincy when cycling on very "undulating" terrain. But when cycling along the coast, every "up" must have its "down" and the downhill stretches were absolutely amazing. As for other practical details: wear layers on the jounrney out to Croatia - it was about 8 degrees when I left my home in the morning, and about 28 degrees as we wandered round Split in the evening, so you want to make sure you're dressed for both! ATMs were widely available and we ended up spending about 50 kuna on lunch, and 100 kuna on dinner (minus drinks). (Ice cream was only 8 kuna!!). Other advice - wear lots of sun-screen and you don't need a water-back-pack (all the bikes have a water bottle holder). Consider isotonic sports drinks if going in the summer, as we ended up drinking huge amounts of water and yes - people did wear padded cycling shorts! Charging cameras and phones was not a problem, so go wild with your photos (and don't forget to look out for the dolphins on the crossing!)

ANDES TO AMAZON June 2011

This was a fabulous trip which exceeded expectations. Mainland Ecuador tends to go under the radar – definitely a mistake. This trip was full of variety – Ecuador is a diverse country indeed. From jungle to volcanoes to paramos to calderas to markets to World Heritage towns – this trip had a huge variety of activities and sights.

Most Inspirational Moment

Seeing 4 volcanoes at once. Also the Cajas National Park was simply amazing for its scenery and vegetation. And I loved seeing the scarlet macaws.

Thoughts on Group Leader

Javier was superb. He was very knowledgeable and great fun to be with. We even enjoyed his jokes! He was always looking for ways to improve our experience. His command of English was very good and he gave us a real insight into Ecuadorian life. A wonderful guide.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Make sure that you take a headlight for the jungle (there is no electricity in the chalets). Also take thick socks - we wore gumboots/wellingtons twice for muddy walks and thick socks made them much more comfortable. Also, make sure you take your hiking boots or good walking shoes/trainers - we did more walking than expected - all optional - I thought the walking greatly added to the experience.

ANDES TO AMAZON

Overall quite a good trip but in my opinion lacking more time in interesting parts of the country – mainly the rainforest.

Most Inspirational Moment

All the wild places and valleys and mountains plus the volcanoes and the rainforest.

Thoughts on Group Leader

10 out of 10 for knowledge, patience, tolerance and being very easy going.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Be prepared for a diverse selection of environments and places of interest.

WALKING IN THE WESTERN DOLOMITES

This trip was the perfect combination for me – great scenery, varied walks, excellent hotel, amazing food and a great group of people. Eric led the group B walks and he was the perfect leader.

Most Inspirational Moment

Drawing the curtains back on the first morning, having arrived in rain and darkness the night before, and seeing the beautiful mountains!Seeing the incredible views after a slog up a steep slope! The wild flowers. They were so abundant and beautiful.Swimming and relaxing in the steam room before dinner - what luxury!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Eric was relaxed but in control, which is no mean feat when you have a group of 17 or so. He briefed us about the next day's walk every evening. He had alternatives in case of bad weather. We had a storm after lunch one day and Eric changed the route so that we got down as fast as possible. Then the bus didn't arrive so he arranged a taxi for us all while we waited in a cafe. He was a great group leader and I'm sure he could handle anything. He knew lots about the area, plants, etc too. He was a lovely, knowledgable, good humoured guide.

Advice for Potential Travellers

Believe the trip notes when it says take a warm hat and gloves. It was late June and the weather on the last few days was variable. We got caught in a storm and it hailed. I was very glad of my hat, gloves and waterproof trousers!I had a hydration system and everyone envied it.Take a walking pole (or two). I'd never used one before and I was glad of it on the gravelly slopes, some of which are quite steep.

PHOTOGRAPHIC SAFARI

Another great photographic safari.  This was supposedly the "low" season – there is no low season in the Mara.  The sightings, photographic opportunities and general experience are as good as the peak season. Everyone involved as always puts everything into making the trip a success.  If you haven’t been on one of these trips you are missing out.

Most Inspirational Moment

At this time of year (June) the scenery is fantastic with long golden grasslands combined with fresh green short grass.  On this trip we saw an abundance of Leopards and seeing 3 together in the same tree was amazing.  However probably the most awe inspiring was the storm clouds that amassed on our last evening.  They were like something from an apocalyptic movie with black storm clouds on one side and clear skies on the other (and we avoided most of the massive downpour that followed).

Thoughts on Group Leader

As always inspirational,  demanding and does everything to make the trip and your photography a success

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING: DOBBIACO

A wonderful all-round experience amongst the glorious scenery of the Dolomites . I just keep going back ! ( Is it 8 or 9 times now ? )

Most Inspirational Moment

The descent down the old military road after lunch at 2000 metres .

Thoughts on Group Leader

Albert , whom I have known over several ski trips , was his usual friendly competent self ; easy to get on with , well organised and delightful company . David ( who led the other group and was also well known to me  ) was equally so .

Advice for Potential Travellers

Look forward to a great holiday with a superb variety of ski days under good leaders and a comfortable stay in a friendly family - owned hotel .

WALKING IN ANDALUCIA

A fabulous holiday.  Cortijo Rosario has very friendly welcoming staff and fabulous food.  The walks are lovely and although we had unusually hot weather (even for June), we enjoyed every moment.

Most Inspirational Moment

Hard to decide between the last two days as both walks were in the hills with stunning views.  Perhaps the walk to the El Chorro Gorge just gets top spot, particularly as we finished the afternoon with a swim in the lake opposite the King's summer residence!

Thoughts on Group Leader

Fantastic, could not have been better!

Advice for Potential Travellers

If you go in June, take lots of sun block!
