This was a fast paced tour of the three Baltic countries, starting off from Estonia and ending in Lithuania. All three were very interesting countries and much different than I had imagined.
Everything worked smoothly and there was never a dull moment.
The walking tour of Riga, Latvia was excellent as it is architecturally a very nice city. Some of us went on a canal boat trip which is a must-do. Not only do you pass through a tranquil park but you get on the big river and pass under massive bridges.
Our tour leader Jolita Auglyte was a rather bubbly Lithuanian who was quite knowledgeable. She had good organisational capabilities and kept the group of twenty together. She took us to very nice restaurants and was always at hand when required. Some of us came to like her very much.
Rain gear is a must! Euros are the best currency. Don't waste time trying to change Sterling Pounds. Atms are everywhere and easy to work as they are bilingual.
A gentle introduction to three countries – Cities, National Parks and coastal areas. From old historic centres to an abandoned Nuclear missile complex. A constantly interesting trip but never too serious or flippant. The evidence of former Soviet occupation is still there but the old towns were very well preserved or restored and the people were very welcoming and proud of their Traditions.
Each country exceeded our expectations and despite their similarities in Geography, Politics and turbulent History were quite individual in character and culture. Tallinn's mix of medieval and modern was charming. Riga was lively - with winding streets and grand Art Nouveau Architecture, and Vilnius was a cosmopolitan, sophisticated, capital city - with Baroque Architecture and Parisienne style boulevards.
Yolita ( or 'Yo' ) was excellent - very patient with the individual demands of the mixed group. Her language skills and local knowledge made the transition between the three countries easy for us. ( I noticed at the 'group' meals that she took care to sit with someone different each night.) On a personal note, Yolita gave my wife and I a personal tour of Vilnius on her day off as we had missed the group tour due to personal circumstances - what a star!
We were unsure about the weather - but were lucky enough to have sunshine most of the time - except when we visited the underground missile complex - but that just added to the atmosphere. As Vegetarians we were prepared for a limited diet - but the range and availability of Veggy food surprised us - with many local dishes and unexpected combinations. ( We even found an excellent Vegan Restaurant in Riga ) ....... oh, and the local beer was great!
A very interesting holiday seeing the 3 Baltic states and learning about their history and seeing towns and countryside. We also sampled local cuisine.
I think what the people have done to restore their countries since gaining their independence not so long ago is inspirational!
Our group leader Vaida Jusaite was a lovely caring and informative leader who is passionate about the Baltic States and very knowledgeable. She made sure we experienced all that we could . She was also empathic to our needs.
If you want to experience the Baltic States and learn about their history and culture this is the holiday for you!
Three countries in twelve days gives you a taste of the culture and life across these Baltic States. The small changes as you move from one to the other are evident but also the sense of unity shared by these countries was evidwent.
Seeing the pride in an elderly man I photographed at the Freedom Monument in Riga at the celebration of Restoration of Independence day, and the same emotion about Europe Day at the sound of the European Anthem expressed by our guide Lolita. That tune will always remind me of the trip.
Lolita had a smile to greet us every day that never waned in our presence. Her knowledge and enthusiasm was outstanding. Her tolerance of our behaviour with a large group of varied people was commendable.
The food is very pork and potatoes based but are very big potions. The weather was very changeable, with sunshine and showers in the same day.
The visit to Trakei Castle, the sun way shining and the bird singing.
Jolita was amazing, she had an amazing knowledge of each of the three countries and made the long drives interesting. She was always willing to help and answer questions.
Take many layers of clothing and either a brolly or waterproof coat as the weather can change in an instant.
Really nice mix of different experiences, ably led by our superb tour leader Jolita.
Whilst the cities were fascinating, with some beautiful architecture, I think my favourite aspect was walking the peat bog.
The group leader was friendly and informative and very patient with our questions!
Trip notes suggested it rarely rains in summer - the latter half of August was however quite wet so go prepared with waterproofs!
An enjoyable and informative trip. It was varied and there was a good balance between city, town and country. Each day had something of interest. The guides were excellent. The only real improvements I would suggest would be to lengthen the stay in Tallinn – a second day is definitely necessary – and to change the first hotel in Tallinn which was a disappointment. A little more walking in the National Parks would also be welcome.
There were a number, particularly in the three capitals which were each fascinating for different reasons. The museums of occupation and genocide victims, whilst harrowing, are a must. Equally the restored Art Nouveau buildings in Riga are nothing short of amazing. Trakai castle is also stunning.
She was very good indeed. I thought she got the balance just right between looking after us and leaving us to our own devices. She was very caring and well informed, with a good breadth of knowledge, and her English was excellent.
A very enjoyable trip. Well organised, as usual with Exodus, well led, surprisingly hot weather (30+ degrees) and three very interesting counties. We visited several fascinating cities, and heard a lot about the dark days of soviet rule, the struggle for independence, and its eventual achievement in 1991.
Several highlights: the beautiful cities of Tallinn and Riga, the Curonian Spit, Trakai castle, a cold war nuclear weapons site, the "hill of crosses", and lots of churches!
Nice lady, from Lithuania. She didn't know much about Estonia or Latvia so we had (very good) local guides, but when we got to her home city of Vilnius there was no stopping her!
The tour was very well organised. Our guide, Jolita was friendly, helpful and a fun person. It was an added bonus that the group was relatively small, 9people only. The transport minibus was comfortable and the drivers were excellent and helpful with the luggage. We enjoyed all the sites we visited and I would not recommend changing any of it. All accommodations were clean, comfortable and some really nice ones. I would definitely recommend this trip to others.
I am not sure that the right word is inspirational, but Plokstine was the most memorable impression of the trip and very enlightening.
Jolita was excellent, friendly and helpful, made sure the group stayed cohesive and she was fun too.
Bring warm clothes, waterproof shoes and clothes!
