Iceland’s sudden explosion onto the travel scene a few years ago has seen it rise to a staple starring on every adventurers’ bucket list. Just some of the incredible places you’ll visit on our Iceland winter adventures.
Reasons for Iceland Winter Holidays
1. Snowy Waterfalls
We’ll visit some of the more dramatic ones – Gullfoss thundering down a rock staircase into a canyon, and iconic Skogafoss with its stunning 60m drop creating a series of rainbows.
2. Cool Reykjavik
Iceland’s cosmopolitan capital packs a cultural punch way above its weight. Downtown’s main drag – Laugavegur – is home to great restaurants, shops and galleries.
3. Glaciers
The Vatnajokull National Park – almost entirely glacial ice cap – covers a phenomenal 10% of Iceland. Ice pick walks will take you into its vast white interior.
4. Thingvellir
The lonely plateau of Thingvellir National Park is where the world’s first democratic parliament sat in 930AD. The site is home to the rift valley marking the Mid Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart.
5. Volcanoes
You still might not be able to pronounce it, but we’ll pass by notorious Eyjafjallajokull Volcano whose 2010 eruptions grounded planes across northern Europe.
6. The Original Geysir
The water spout by which all others are named. Neighbouring Strokkur shoots 20 metres into the sky every eight minutes or so.
7. Lava Tubes
Look for the stalagmites and stalactites and the chandeliers of glistening icicles.
8. The Blue Lagoon
This series of geothermically heated pools are lined with soft silica – slather it on your face for a skin-softening treat.
9. Glacial Lagoon
The ethereally beautiful Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon was formed in the 1950s to leave a 300m deep, 20sq km lake littered with icebergs.
