Start Braccicorti
We gather at Agriturismo Braccicorti, approximately 4mi (6km) from Castelnuovo di Garfagnana and two hours from Pisa Airport. You can refresh yourself with a dip in the pool, before we gather for a welcome briefing later in the day.

Walk through Orecchiella National Park to Pania di Corfino (Activity Level 3)
After breakfast at Braccicorti, we drive to the small village of Pruno where we begin our walk into Orecchiella National Park. In spring, the area can be covered in snow punctuated by the tracks of wolves, deer and mountain hares. Late spring and summer, it is carpeted with an array of beautiful flowers and the beech trees sprout lime-green leaves, which transform to deep oranges, browns and reds in autumn. If we are lucky, we might spot birds of prey; perhaps common or honey buzzards, or even a golden eagle.
Our walk, which is set among beautiful beech trees, steadily ascends to the flat summit of Pania di Corfino, where you can enjoy stunning 360-degree views. After a leisurely picnic lunch, we head to the 16th-century village of Campaiana, before following an ancient mule track, which descends to the town of Corfino.

The beautiful rock arch of Monte Forato (Activity Level 5)
Starting the day with a drive of approximately 40 minutes, we arrive at the gorge of Fornovolasco in Alpi Apuane National Park. From here, we follow a dry riverbed through woodland, before ascending more steeply to enjoy views down to the Versilia coast and across to the marble quarries.
We take a short scramble to meet the spine that leads up to the incredible rock arch of Monte Forato. The summit is only a stone’s throw away; ascend it for majestic views of Pania della Croce. Continuing on the path, we descend sharply through the trees and past old shepherds’ huts to reach our minibus.

Apuane National Park to Monte Sumbra (Activity Level 3)
Today we drive 40 minutes to the small village of Vianova and begin our walk into Alpi Apuane National Park. Much of our initial ascent is on a wide forest track that continues through beech woods to our first viewpoint across to the face of Pania della Croce and the Omo Morto range.
From here, we take a footpath ascending to a limestone plateau where there is an optional ascent to the summit of Monte Sumbra (5,791ft/1,765m). Weather permitting, we will enjoy an uninterrupted view of the Alpi Apuane range, the Ligurian coast and the enormous spine of the Apennines. After lunch on the summit, we retrace our steps back to the limestone plateau, before heading down through the trees following one of the old charcoal trails back to the minibus. On the return to Braccicorti, we stop in the lovely town of Careggine (time permitting).

Apuane National Park to the summit of Pania della Croce (Activity Level 5)
Today we drive for around 45 minutes to return to Alpi Apuane National Park, this time to arrive at the foot of Uomo Morto (the Dead Man). We ascend steadily through beech woods to emerge at Rifugio Rossi, a small mountain hut at the base of the Dead Man’s nose. There is a high chance of seeing mouflon (wild mountain sheep) as we make our way up a large boulder field to a ridge leading to the top of the Dead Man’s stomach and the summit of Pania della Croce at 6,096ft (1,858m).
Along with good views of the marble quarries and the coastal town of Forte di Marmi below us, we can admire the coast to the Cinque Terre, the flat plains of Lucca and Pisa to the east, and the long spine of the Apennine ridge on the opposite side of the valley. After a picnic lunch on the summit, we retrace our steps back to the rifugio, before returning to the bus.

Circular walk from Braccicorti to medieval market town Castiglione di Garfagnana (Activity Level 3)
With a change of guide for the day, we walk directly from the farmhouse at 1,345ft (410m), firstly visiting the new town of Villa Collemandina before heading to the church and learning about the history of the area. After, the route follows tracks, quiet lanes and footpaths through the local farmland and villages allowing us a real insight into local life.
Midway through the day, we will arrive at Castiglione di Garfagnana at 1,788ft (545m), a small but beautiful medieval town. Castiglione is also the place where the largest and most popular chestnut festival in the region is held each autumn, celebrating the chestnut tree and the growth of truffles and mushrooms. After lunch, we cross a 13th-century bridge below the town leading into more farmland and back to Braccicorti on easy tracks.

Apuane National Park to Monte Tambura (Activity Level 5)
Changing guides for the day, we transfer to the 16th-century shepherds’ village of Campocatino. From here, you begin a continuous ascent on a well-marked path to reach the ridge line of Monte Tambura where you begin your summit.
The path can be a little exposed and loose in places with stunning views of the craggy peaks all around. From the summit, we continue on the ridge line descending to one of the many marble quarries in this mountain range before carefully making our way across several small rocky sections with a fixed security line to aid us on our return to Campocatino.

Free day to visit Lucca, the Cinque Terre, Florence or Pisa
Today is free to enjoy any of the following optional activities: one-hour train journey to visit the stunning fortified city of Lucca; 20-minute taxi and 90-minute train journey to the coastal Unesco World Heritage site of the Cinque Terre; 2hr 30min train journey to visit the capital city of Florence, home of Michelangelo’s David; or the 90-minute train journey to Pisa where you can ascend the leaning tower and walk along the beautiful river Arno.
There are also plenty of options closer to home. Relax with a good book at the farmhouse and make use of the sun loungers and outdoor pool, take a walk down to Lago di Pontecosi for lunch or take a 10-minute train ride to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana for lunch and a walk to the old castle.
Campocatino and San Viviano’s Hermitage (Activity Level 3)
A 25-minute drive to Lago di Vagli, with its submerged village and impressive Monte Sumbra backdrop, will bring us to the start point for the day: Vagli Sotto. From here, we walk on a small footpath to the town of Vagli Sopra where we continue to ascend on a section of the pilgrimage walk through chestnut woods to arrive at the 16th-century shepherds’ village of Campocatino. Wandering through the village and seeing the beautiful, terraced meadows, protected by the impressive wall of Roccandagia, it is easy to understand why the shepherds chose this location.
From here, we continue to our highest point for the day at 3,904ft (1,190m) before descending through the trees to San Viviano’s Hermitage. Built into the rock face, the tiny hermitage is said to be where San Viviano lived before his bones were discovered in 1993. It is now used as a chapel and pilgrimage site. Our descent takes a rarely used mountain path with views across the valley before arriving back at the bus.

Appennino Tosco‐Emiliano National Park Monte Prado and Monte Cusna (Activity Level 5)
After a 40-minute drive, we begin our two-day ridge walk with a steady ascent through beech woods to meet the Crinali ridge in the Tosco-Emiliano Appennino National Park. During winter, the ridge is snow-covered, but spring brings the growth of alpine flowers, while autumn covers the ground in the purple of myrtle and juniper berries.
Following the crest, this easy route takes us along the ridge to the Monte Prado summit, the highest peak in Tuscany at 6,739ft (2,054m). We then descend to the small tarn of Lago di Bargetana, before continuing into Emilia Romagna and up to Monte Cusna at 6,959ft (2,121m). Marmots can be encountered on the way. After our second summit we descend to our mountain hut Rifugio Bargetana where we enjoy an evening meal before a well-deserved rest. Nestled among the trees, the rifugio is a retreat loved for its good food and wildlife-spotting opportunities.

Appennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park and the summit of Monte Prado (Activity Level 3)
We start the day with a 40-minute drive to the small ski area of Casone. Walking through beech woods brings us to the beginning of the Crinali ridge, a section of the 994mi (1,600km) Apennine ridge in the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park, offering some of the most impressive views of the week. Look below to see the fiery colours of the forest between the ridge line of Tuscany and the opposite ridge of Emilia Romagna. We take an easy path along the undulating ridge, leading up to the peak of Monte Prado, the highest in Tuscany at 6,739ft (2,054m). After lunch, we retrace our steps before descending on another route through woodland back to Casone, where there is a bar to enjoy a well-earned drink.

Apennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park to Passo di Praderena (Activity Level 5)
After our night in the mountain hut, we retrace our steps to Lago di Bargetana, then head back into Tuscany and onto the Crinali ridge. We stay on this ridge line all day with fantastic views across the Alpi Apuane National Park and the Serchio valley. During autumn, the views can stretch as far as the Alps to the north and the islands of Corsica and Sardinia. After completing 9mi (15km), we arrive at Passo di Praderana where we will drive 40 minutes to Braccicorti, with the option of stopping at the Osteria of Verrucole Fortress for a celebratory drink.

Transfer to Pisa; fly to London
Transfer back to Pisa; fly to London.
Please note that at times, especially during summer months, the inbound flight can be late in the evening. In this instance you will have additional time to spend in Pisa. Leader will take care of all arrangements in terms of transport from/to the airport and the city centre and luggage storage. It may also happen that, for logistical reasons, on return we will have to be at the airport earlier than normally scheduled. This will mean a longer waiting time before checking in.

Getting to the start hotel
The start hotel is approximately 1hr 30min to two hours’ drive from the airport. Your options for this journey are:
Take an Exodus transfer
Exodus provides one group arrival transfer from the airport, which is timed to coincide with the arrival of a chosen flight from London, UK. You may join this transfer at no extra cost, provided you can be at the airport before the transfer leaves. Speak to your sales representative for the group arrival transfer times or to arrange a private transfer.
Make your own way
It’s possible to reach the start hotel by public transport, but the journey can be a little complicated. We therefore recommend joining the group transfer where possible. If not, trains run from Pisa Central to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. The ticket costs approximately €12 for a two-hour journey. Train timetables can be found on www.ferroviedellostato.it. From Castelnuovo, it is a 10‐minute taxi ride to Braccicorti, which should cost €25-€28. The phone number of a local taxi company will be provided on the Final Joining Instructions, as there are no taxi ranks at Castelnuovo station.

Catching your return flight
There’s a group departure transfer to the airport that’s scheduled to align with a flight to London, UK. Please speak to your sales representative if you wish to join. Agriturismo Braccicorti
Our base for this trip is Agriturismo Braccicorti, a traditional stone farmhouse on the lower slopes of the Apennines. On a typical Tuscan farm, it has been authentically renovated and is surrounded by meadows, orchards, woodland and vines.
It comprises four twin/double rooms (with private bathrooms) and two apartments, with one twin/double and one single room sharing a bathroom. Double or twin should be stated upon booking and the rooms with private bathrooms are on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, if requested. There is also a dining room, comfortable living room, quiet room, terrace, golf course with a driving range, swimming pool (open mid-May to end of September), and a garden with sweeping views to the mountains.

- Activity Level 5 (Challenging) departures: We spend one night in a mountain hut with dormitory-style accommodation. There is no charge for the only standard single room, as bathroom facilities are shared. This is provided on a ‘first come, first served’ basis and should be requested upon booking. Further double rooms for sole use can be requested two weeks prior to departure; a supplement applies for these. We cannot guarantee these will have private bathrooms.

Read the trip notes! Most people can do these hikes but they are not strolls in the park. Prepare yourself in advance and you should be fine.

Fantastic trip with a good variety of walks. The Garfagnana area truly is one of Italy’s best kept secrets – a lot of the time it felt like you had the whole place to yourself! The whole area is absolutely stunning.

We had been on an Exodus walking holiday before and Walking in Tuscany was one of the next holidays we wanted to experience. True to form, right from booking, it was second to none and what we had hoped for.
Wonderful scenery, excellent Tuscan rustic accommodation, very friendly staff and an amazing tour guide. The walking caters for all within ‘moderate’ abilities, allowing for challenging yourself if you choose with experienced support.

Sara was super human!! Extremely experienced and knowledgeable and an endless abundance of energy. Nothing was too much trouble. Sara catered for everyone's specific needs and ensured the itinerary got the best out of the weather so that the rain did not hinder our experience. Walking in Tuscany was an amazing experience
The accommodation was in an agriturismo farm. It was a very nice place to be with all the beautiful scenery around to view on waking. Elvis the dog was a great accompaniment.
The walking or hiking was tough in some places but on completion you felt a great sense of achievement.The food at the farm was delicious. Breakfast and lunch were self service but all was provided to make a hearty meal. Dinner was there courses of home made items.

Reaching the summit of our climb on Thursday. It was very hard on the last third especially coming down but definitely achievable. The cave was also a great place to visit on you day off or if weather too bad to hike.

Sarah was very inspirational and motivating. She definitely got me out of my comfort zone. Nothing was too much for her to organise including our washing. It was inspiring to listen to her tales of adventures she has had in the past and characters she has had on her trips.

I would thoroughly recommend this trip for great scenery and amazing hikes. If a beginner like me then do get some basic hiking done before you go so the steeper trails are not too daunting. Sarah however makes everything achievable no matter how tough with her encouragement.
Amazing trip, highly recommended
This was our first exodus trip and exceeded our expectations in every way. From the first contact I had with Exodus over the phone, I was impressed by how efficient and helpful the travel advisor Robyn was, she answered all of my queries and was accommodating when we needed to change our travel dates after paying the deposit. The subsequent contacts with Exodus were helpful and informative and the trip notes answered all questions we had when preparing for our trip. Sara Bull our guide was amazing, she is so enthusiastic about the area and managed to perfectly balance being supportive of everyone’s abilities and confidence levels, while still challenging the group. Our group gelled well and walks and meals together were enjoyable and fun. Sara never pressured any member of the group to walk faster than they were comfortable with, and paced the walks perfectly to keep energy levels up. The walking was hard at times, but was definitely worth it for some amazing views at the top. We loved having the company of Sara’s dog Elvis, and the dogs and cats around Braccicorti added to the family style feel of the accommodation. We feel so lucky to have had a fantastic guide, and such an enjoyable first trip with Exodus. Our only concern is that our future trip expectations are now very high!

Fab, Sara is a very inspirational leader and has an infectious energy and zest, even if she does seem superhuman at times. I found Sara really warm and open about her life, family and experiences which made the trip more personal. She had a real confidence in leading the walks, which you are constantly aware of in the background, this enables you to fully relax into the pace and not have any worries about how fast you should be walking, distance travelled, getting lost, unpredictable conditions etc. I would have been intimidated to try mountain trails without a guide prior to this trip, but I now feel confident that I could follow the walking routes and am capable of the activity level.

Tuscany September 2023
Having completed seven previous Exodus walking holidays, we had high hopes for our eighth. We were not disappointed as this trip was the best we have been on so far. The area we walked in was beautiful and quiet, full of views, forests, mountains and history. We stayed at Braccicorti, a characterful farmhouse where we were well looked after by the family. The food was local, fresh and really well cooked and presented and something of a highlight in itself. The walking is moderately hard, but very rewarding. Very quiet tracks and panoramic views from the mountains. As usual, the group were like minded individuals and on this trip everyone gelled and got on really well.
Most Inspirational Moment
Several great peaks stay in the memory but if we had to select one moment, it would be looking through the arch of the Monte Ferrato framing the countryside way below.

Sara (and her dog Elvis) was excellent. She made every effort to give everyone in the group the best possible holiday and was an experienced and highly competent leader. We have always had good leaders on Exodus trips, but Sara is one of the very best.
Advice for Potential Travellers
Not the easiest level 3 we have done but the rewards are well worth the efforts. Get as fit as you can to get the best out of the holiday, and don’t expect too much downtime at the end of the day. Paths are rocky in parts, so good boots are a benefit alongside all the usual walking gear.
Great trip
I had a great trip staying at Braccicorti and walking in the remote mountains.The accommodation is a family run hotel. The family are very friendly and the food wholesome and locally sourced. The trip was full on, we were busy most of the time. The walking was quite tough but very enjoyable, we reached lots of peaks and there were always options for the less able. Apart from our day off and one of the day’s of walking we were very much off the beaten track and did not meet too many other people. The whole group gelled well together over a common love of walking.

I was very happy to have got to the top of the highest mountain in Tuscany - Monte Prado - at 2054 metres. The views from the top were amazing.

Sara was amazing - she was beyond excellent. She couldn't do enough for us. She was very well organised and planned all our transport arrangements for our free day in Lucca. She was always on duty from breakfast to dinner (and no doubt beyond). She looked after us really well.
Advice for Potential Travellers
If you are not a regular hiker, make sure you get fit before you come on the holiday and you will enjoy it much better. Age is no barrier, as long as you are fit. We had a couple in their late seventies on our trip who tackled the peaks no problem. Make sure you are well equipped with proper walking boots with ankle support and clothing for all weathers - sun hat, sunglasses, waterproof jacket and trousers, hat and gloves - the weather can change suddenly. If you are in need of a holiday to relax and read a book, this is not the holiday for you. We were busy the majority of the time. On the other hand, if you like to be busy and to be walking, you will enjoy the trip.
Fantastic time walking in Tuscany
The walking in Tuscany trip far exceeded my expectations. The whole trip was meticulously planned and it was so easy to relax right from the start and simply enjoy myself. The accommodation at Agriturismo Braccicorti was clean and comfortable and the family who run it are just the loveliest people and made everyone feel so welcome. The food was simple, locally sourced and we were very well fed. The walking (Level 3) was absolutely fantastic – made all the better by our simply wonderful guide Sara, and the lovely group of people on the trip. I was a bit apprehensive about the weather as there had been storms the week before we went. However our guide Sara is an absolute expert on the region and was able to plan each days walk to take full advantage of where the weather was the most glorious on each day’s hike.

The walk was challenging in a good way and the landscapes and vistas were nothing short of breath taking. Pack your wet weather gear even if you think the day will be fine, it can be changeable in the mountains. Don't underestimate the challenge of a level 3, make sure you've upped your fitness levels so you can relax and really enjoy the fantastic ascents and descents.
A Fabulous Week in Tuscany
A fantastic week in Tuscany, the family who ran the Agriturismo were delightful and could not be more friendly, considerate and helpful. The accommodation is fairly basic,but clean and comfortable (as expected). We were worried prior to the trip about the weather, but it turned out to be sunny most of the week! The itinery was just amazing, varied and with some quite incredible walks; especially the last day hiking up Monte Sumbra – unforgetable! The walking group was a great cross section of people, and many laughs were had over the week…..all I can say is it is a ‘must do’ trip!
Most Inspirational Moment
Too many to mention, as each day's hiking had something special. Taking aside it was a walking holiday, the people, as in the guide Sara, the Italian family and the people in the group were just wonderful, to meet so many nice people was just a privilege!
Thoughts on Group Leader
Sara is by far the best guide we have ever had, and my wife and I have completed several hiking Tours. Her personality, knowledge, experience, care, attention to detail, stories and sense of humour made the whole trip extra special. ....quite literally, an amazing lady! Sara even offers 'Reiki', which my wife undertook, although I am a sceptic, she came away from the session enlivened and inspired! Well done Sara, I hope our paths cross again some day?
Walking in Tuscany
Accommodation was very good. Trip notes were accurate. Weather was unexpectedly cold and wet much of the time.
Most Inspirational Moment
Getting to the high point of Tuscany, Monte Prado, on one of the good weather days.
Thoughts on Group Leader
Excellent. She was very knowledgeable about the area and juggled the itinerary to get the most of the good weather days. She also organised all the travel details for our day-off trip to Lucca, complete with tour suggestions when there.
Advice for Potential Travellers
It may not be as warm as you expect in May.
